DEC does not manage deer they just keep the population down, big difference. Management would imply that they actually do something to improve the deer population. Antler restrictions, restricting doe and telling us to pray for mild winters is the extent of their help. No need for me to go to a meeting about how they do nothing to improve deer. Snipers, baiting, spotlighting at night, food stations with chemicals pored into deer that make no hunter want the chemical stained meat. Farms with excessive permits? Keep up the good work, arg. I do not blame the Biologist or even the DEC but to say they manage deer is just wrong they do not manage deer they are just in it for population control.

Amazing predators! One of my favorites.

Calm relaxing waves, peaceful scenery, wildlife and fishing!!! For me it is much more relaxing on a lake vs a river or salt water.

Great setup for long hikes and still hunting thick woods. Good luck with it!

Q1 Color can vary even in the same herd. Time of year can affect this when they shed winter coats. 2 Just like people tails can vary, but usually a straight up tail is from a fleeing or alert deer. The tail makes it simple for the other doe or fawns to follow or become alerted to danger. 3 They can be mixed this time of the year, some bucks might still hold antlers for another month but most have dropped by now. Not to say that it can't be a group of doe or possibly bucks but the possibility is good it could be mixed. Many factors. 4 Fawns typically will stay with the doe mom for 1 to 2.5 years, doe fawns typically stay within moms home range if food source is available and will overlap the moms range where as the buck fawn will roam for miles to set up a new home.

Rescued one that was poisoned in a boat and got it back to health. Released it once it was able to fend for itself. My buddy kept it feed all year long and was able to hand feed him and his friends. Grays I like but those dam red ones keep giving up my position in the woods!

I have to agree with Wolc123, drawing a bow is the best exercise. Staying in shape and using the same muscles you use for drawing is very important. I notice many guys who have issues drawing their bow late season stopped practicing. Even during the season I try to practice at least 2 times a week and usually 3 times as a standard minimum. As some on here know I have had some issues with my neck. Keeping in shape, staying off the dam computer and practicing along with working those muscles will keep your back and arms ready. Sit-ups for a good core, back and arm work out to help the draw. After doing a few months of physical therapy I though the bow poundage was lowered but it was just because my back was in better shape! I start my draw with the front arm extended but not locked and keep the draw hand close to my body while going to full draw. I would keep your elbow close to your body and raise it as you come to full draw. If you struggle to get to full draw you need to work out your back and arms more so you do not cause damage to your shoulders. (Or low the poundage.) Typically this is why guys hurt their shoulder because they are out of practice and have not drawn the bow in over 2 weeks or more. ok time to hit the range!

My guns go through hell up in the ADK especially if it rains. Simply put I need a stainless steal composite gun for that area. 2 weeks in high humidity is simply bad for metal parts. I try to clean the barrel every 40-50 rounds or if I notice poor accuracy or 2 range shoots. I try to keep them oiled but rust is always an issue. I usually run 10 or more patches of cleaner along with dry patches down the barrel and then last but not least is an oil patch. I use Q-tips and old tooth brushes for the fire mechanism and smaller moving parts by the action. Another reason I do not worry so much about scent, my guns stink of gun oil.

How to destroy / disable old hard drives ?
NFA-ADK replied to fasteddie's topic in General Chit Chat
If you really want to destroy the data as stated you need to damage the plates. I simply bust the electrical connections but the hard drives do not have any real data that I care about anyone getting. If they are smart enough to know how to get the data and succeed they will find it was not worth the effort. IDE and SATA both have moving parts like a record, damage the record enough and getting the data is next to impossible. Solid state hard drives are much easer to brake with a hammer. My solution is to get it apart by what ever method you wish, gun, screwdriver, hammer, whiz wheel then damage the plates. Or you can use the shredder Black Bellamy suggested just make sure the plates are in pieces. I have recovered salt water damaged drives but it was a small miracle. -
Welcome aboard Buckman4C! Love Pennsylvania! Use to vacation as a kid at my Uncle Mert and Aunt Mats house in summers and winters if we did not go to Maine. As a matter of fact I believe that is where my whitetail passion started! Listening to stories of how my Uncle always got a deer every year and seeing them on the farm was a thrill! Great site with some really cool and experienced hunters! Join in the conversation but don't get upset we like to argue a lot, lol. Any questions just start a new topic. To attach a picture click on more options below. Again welcome aboard, great to have you! We are not bias we love Penn State!

I tend to get a little impatient after about 9 months. Usually I get the mount back in about a year. Rich at Fins to Feathers does great work IMO. So I try not to bust his chops about when it will be done and usually just ask for a rough estimate on time. The quickest I had one done was about 5 months but I had gotten the deer before southern zone opened so I think I was first on the list. It is a work of art and does require a good skillset to get it done properly and the last thing I want to do is rush the guy who is preserving my memories! Be patient once you get it back you can look at it everyday and hopefully relive that precious memory and beauty of that majestic animal!

Welcome aboard! If you have any questions, start a new topic. Very friendly and knowledgeable people on this site! But don't take offense if we argue we are a stubborn bunch! And don't be upset if someone disagrees with you or your opinion, we all have different perspectives. Enjoy!

10-Year Vegetarian Here That Now Eats Meat...
NFA-ADK replied to Heraclitus's topic in Introductions
Welcome to the site! Congrats on wanting to explore the great outdoors, fishing and hunting, yep you came to the right site! First I would get a fishing license. Small and large game you need to take a class to get a safety certificate that will get you a license to hunt. Next you would need to choose if you want salt water, fresh water, small game or large game. Fishing is easy to start. Charter boats are great for salt water. Hunting you would need to choose game and weapon. Small game is easy to start off with but big game is better to have a mentor. Most important would be to go to the DEC web site, they are a wealth of information. http://www.dec.ny.gov/ I am interested in mentoring but would need more info. Not to get to detailed on a public forum but are you born and bread NYer? How far can you hike? Can you drag a 100 lbs? Can you swim? And what kind of BB gun did you have? -
Like the article but I would argue the fact that man first hunted solo and stalked or ambushed as the oldest form.

That sucks the knife was a beauty!

Welcome aboard! Happy to have you! Nice mounts!!! You get around!
-
Hope you recover quick but it takes a while. A month after I had one repaired I shot a 200 lbs buck, lucky for me I had 4 guys to help drag it out. Even at 30 the recover was long and notable that it was done. Good luck feel better and take it very slow at first and work your way up gradually. Feel better FastEddie!

Going to give it a shot. Do you use bino's or like Biz said just walk a bunch looking?

Refocus is when you put your eye in the scope and try to get the target into the field of view. Maybe I should have said target location, your scope is never exactly on the target when you put your eye in it so you have to get the target into view and then into the crosshairs. My open sights I never focus on, once the gun is in my shoulder the sight is lined up I just have to put the front sight on the target.
