  1. I range a few trees in the area while on stand, when still hunting I use the 10 yard estimate and try to keep the shots under 30. If I stop I will estimate and range a few trees. The more you estimate with the range finder the better you will get at judging distance so I try to do it often.
  2. Brute, good luck with him!
  3. Good luck Turkeyfeathers, hope you have a great safe successful youth hunt! Looks like you picked a great spot! Looking forward to reading your adventures!
  4. For me I just set a bar for the day. EX: Any 10 pt or better today is on the list. If I find a big track in a area I usually will not settle for anything less but it causes me to pass many deer. Usually for me any decent 8 or better is good while stalking and in the tree on private my standards are set to 140 ish or better. (I get one free pass but can't pull the trigger knowing what is available.) My standards do not change whether it is opening day or the last day. 8 pt or better.
  5. Only advantage to multiple pins is you do not need to change yardage. Single pin offers clear sight without multiple pins glaring in the sun. As stated if you set it at 25 yards it is really easy to compensate with no adjustments out to 30. No in between shooting of pins. Accuracy is better overall. More advantages than disadvantages with a single pin. Now I just need to purchase one, lol.
  6. Such a shame how society looses its roots and deems something that was done to survive now as a ruthless sport just because they have supermarkets and never see how the real world works. These people should be forced to work on a farm for one year and get a dose of reality.
  7. Last years weather cause most of the activity to happen at night. Hope to see a good year with better harvest this year.
  8. Very sorry for your loss, deepest condolences. I am up for some range time and possibly setting up a hunt. We also have a 3D shoot this weekend if anyone wants to meet up and shoot. Its on Sunday at 9 am at Suffolk Archers. I can hit the rifle range next week Sat or Sun.
  9. Used a Savage model 110 in 30-06 for years. Due to heavy cover and limited sight I switched to open sights with a Winchester model 94 in 44 Mag. Easy to carry on long hikes and easy enough to carry all day. It shoulders quick and steady and stays on target after I shoot so follow up if needed is right on target. Thinking about a shoulder strap but I really like it in hand while hunting.
  10. Mow it down and kill a few fawns while your at it. lol Sorry someone had to go against keeping it.
  11. Very nice, good luck with him. Looks like a winner!
  12. The problem is the last part of your sentence. The person who owns the tag is missing when YOU fill another persons tags. But sure why not, get your wife, daughter and 3 cousins that do not hunt to get tags so you can shoot 5 bucks and 10 doe. Like to hear your explanation when the DEC finds out why you have someone's tags when you are hunting. (Well you gave them out to me, right? No sir we gave them to your wife and family, not you.) Lets all go get 10 tags so we never have to stop hunting and can decimate any area we want and get 5 bucks a year. Must be another conservationist, arg.
  13. Poor can, lol it never had a chance! Nice!
  14. Crazy is calling yourself a conservationist while illegally poaching deer. Your dad is allowed a certain amount of deer tags by law, you disregard that law because it fits you and your dads perspective of what is ok. You are taking more game by allowing your father to harvest deer with the tags YOU are suppose to use and justify it by saying you are a conservationist and do not shoot everything otherwise you would decimate the population. You buy tags for your dad so he can shoot more deer because you stopped bow hunting, that makes you and your dad unethical law braking hunters who do not care and will post it on the internet for all to see. That is CRAZY!
  15. Very nice, looks like you had a good time with some decent luck! Very cool!
  16. Good looking bucks, hope you get one! Good luck with them this year!
  17. I have only done a few all day sits last year. My buddy usually has us come out for lunch. Otherwise I usually am on the ground and will change things up by stalking or checking new area and trying to read the sign. What track is this, look for rubs, scraps, rip the woods apart with bino's, eat my fat sandwich. In the tree I will range every possible spot, binocular scans. I try to stay off the phone for the most part unless I am with other hunters. Smoke a but, arg. Just enjoy the fact that I am hunting.
  18. Can not go wrong with hunting clothes. Hunting knife. Boots, socks, hat gloves. Plenty to choose from when they are new.

    Kings Park Area

I have checked it out but always had a hunter in the spot. Looks like a good early season spot.
  20. I learned many hunters blow way to hard into the grunt tube yet it always seems to work! How bad the calling is done amazes me and even when it is done horribly the deer come into range, lol. Wish the deer in NY did that! I do like deer and deer hunting, especially watching the buck fever take effect on Dan Schmidt. The shot placement is good and the knowledge is very educational. Have not watched it in a while but still watch seasons 1-8 with the exertion myopathy and twin buck fawns as two of my favorites. (Season 5 I believe.) Gave up TV a few years ago and do not watch much on the internet.
  21. Persistence, NEVER GIVE UP! Number one rule! Be an expert marksman (or woman) with your weapon, or as good as you are capable, know its trajectory. Be prepared. If shooting a deer is your main goal, SCOUT! The hunters who get deer legally every year usually scout. Never enter the woods without my compass, GPS and above all my basic grunt call and doe cans.
  22. I was so busy I did not take any pics or do video, sorry. I will check with some of the members to see if anyone has some. It was great meeting some of the member from the forum. I wish I could have had more time to go over the calling but between the deer search changing his course and the butchering I really did not have enough time to even start the presentation so tried to explain the things that have worked for me over the years in a mini crash course. It was great meeting Elmo, Hawkenwoodsman and Shawnhu along with friends and family and the many other guest we had. We had some experienced hunters tell some stories that helped in the explanations of how, when and why to call and why sometime it works and other times it sends them running. Thanks for your support on shot placement ATBuckhunter, your after-shot arrow inspection was impressive and I hope that many understood your information as this is one of the most important things after a shot is taken on a deer. Thanks to the NYS DEC Police for coming to our event and answering the many questions we had about hunting! Thanks for protecting the animals we love so much!!! THANK YOU for all that you do! Really just a great time with many experienced hunters sharing knowledge, stories and why some thing are common knowledge to experienced hunters and others we learn. I might be running this even next year and would love to get Mr.Peter Fiduccia (The Deer Doctor) to come and do a presentation or possibly Mr.Charles Alsheimer! Both would be pathetically awesome. Ahh to dream, but for now HUNTING SEASON IS 41 days! SO Great meeting our members, new and seasoned hunters, I hope the vast amount of information in all the presentations helps improve your knowledge of the amazing animal we love to hunt. I hope you get out and enjoy our amazing woods while chasing the animal I have fell in love with so many years ago. Most important is be safe, so I can hear your stories when you get out! Last year was our safest year on record, I pray we can do it again and make NY the safest place to hunt! Thanks again for coming to Suffolk Archers, it was our pleasure having you all at our beautiful club!
  23. We are full at this time but they are taking new member for next year. The course is set up, a 15 target course with an optional long distance shot at about 50 yards, (Range finders allowed and binoculars) two arrow each target with platform shots to duplicate tree stand shots. (After lunch) We have prizes, breakfast and lunch, trading post, Deer Search tracking at 8 AM, shot placement, tree stand safety, deer sign, calling, scent control, arrow test and KE. Rain or shine should be a good time! Looking forward to greeting some of our member and sharing some great stories, knowledge and information.
