  1. Just because you think its overkill and know of a magazine that thinks its overkill, doesn't mean it is. I primarily hunt with a 30-06 but have a good number of rifles ranging from a 22-250 up to a .300 WSM. Never in my life would I consider deer hunting with my 22-250. I don't give a crap what the "experts" say. That is a small, fast, light caliber that was not designed to kill deer. I know I wouldn't want to have that in my hands when a 115 lb doe stepped out, and if I get the chance at a NY giant I definitely would want something that's going to knock him on his A$$. I don't want to track the SOB for hundreds and hundreds of yards while he's bleeding from some tiny little exit hole.
  2. Couple of giants there. Damn shame what happened to them deer.
  3. Couple of warning shots buzzing their cranium should do it. Joking of course. Posted signs every 30 50 yards and heavy patrolling works but you'll spend a lot of time hunting trespassers and not deer.
  4. I have never used a dryer. I would try to hang them up in a garage or basement if you could. If you need to use the dryer, I would use the most delicate drying cycle possible.
  5. Sorry you couldn't find her. Keep your chin up, everyone has made a bad shot, everyone. As long as you learn from your mistakes you will be better off. Now you can look for buzzards and listen for coyotes. Granted the meat is lost, but if you see or hear any of these it may be worth inspecting.
  6. Judging from the teeth I would say 3 1/2. The first molar is still pointed but doesn't look sharp like you would see on a 2 1/2 year old. Seems to be a bit more worn and cusp of the third molar looks more flat, although tough to tell from the angle. Judging from the weight of the deer I would also have to say 3 1/2. I know I read somewhere that whitetail's reach full skeletal growth in their third year, so that is when we start to see the prominent chest formation and body mass. There aren't many 2 1/2 year olds in NY that get bodies that big at that age. Granted I am no expert.
  7. I got to work super early one day (4 am) so I could leave around noon and head up to camp for a long evening sit. Ended up falling asleep in my stand until 9 pm...oops!
  8. Broaden your hunting times. By this I mean pull off a couple lengthy morning/evening sits or if possible an all day hunt. Now is the time to be in the woods as much and for as long as possible.
  9. My buddy shot this buck tonight at our camp in 6K. It's a 7 point weighed 140 lbs and is his biggest buck from our property. He thinks it's a 3 1/2 year old. He said it came in on the same trail a doe and two fawns walked on just before. He said he smelled a little and his neck was slightly enlarged. He was also fortunate enough to take this 6 point buck opening day of the northern zone muzzle loader season on a piece of county property in 6K. It weighed 126 lbs and he thinks it was a 2 1/2 year old.
  10. Not when it's pitch black out in the morning and I'm headed to my stand. But when the hunt is done, I put on the orange and climb down.
  11. On rte 34 I saw what appeared to be a doe and her fawn completely pulverized. I have noticed the deer moving across the road in the evenings more here at the house. It's about that time! Congrats on the buck, can't wait to see pics!
  12. Actually she is...Only catch is my sister in law lives in Virginia, is an Eagles fan, and only makes around $120K per year.
  13. Well the mother in law asked me what I wanted for my birthday (11/23) so I told her I would like a trail cam. I sent her a link with 3 separate Browning cams on it and told her to surprise me with one. Well, she accidentally sent me an email (intended for my wife) that said she bought all 3 of the cams. So looks like I'll have 3 new cams to test out before the season is over, pretty sweet deal. I'll post up some action pics after my birthday.
  14. I would say its a good deal, if the rifle is in like new condition. You can't touch those for much less than $700 NIB now days. They are a great shooting rifle. I have the 7400 30-06 carbine and had the 7600 .270 with 22" barrel. I got the 7400 for $300 from a guy who worked at Remington and got the 7600 for $450 from the same guy. This was 14 years ago. Both were used and in excellent condition. I would see no issue asking around $600 for that gun.
  15. Congrats on the great buck! That trail cam pic did him no justice, he's a beauty!
  16. I'd check the breech plug like the others suggested. GOod luck.

    Youth Bows

I'm going to disagree with you on the youth bow being the reason for losing/injuring a deer. And I wouldn't classify this bow as a youth bow since it is adjustable up to 30" and 70 lbs. It's all about shot placement. There is a minimum poundage requirement for hunting bows and I've seen pass through's with the minimum. If you have the right set up, don't hit solid bone (leg, neck, spine, etc), you will most likely get a pass through. Regardless if you are hunting from ground or stand.

    Fresh pics

Awesome deer. I like that first one.
  19. I would not recommend this. If you know you've gut shot him and don't know where the 2nd arrow is, you are better off waiting until the morning like you plan. He will die, just needs some time.
