Coming next week

I agree Doc. If we couldn't get it done in this last election, I am convinced NY State is a lost cause. It was our best opportunity and so many chose to sit on the sidelines. -
thinking of updating my muzzleloader

Buddy bought a wolf and had issues with it refusing to consistently fire. Returned and got the Optima.Stainless. much better fit and finish than the wolf in my opinion. It is more money but I think the optima is a better product. -
Was invited into a group that did nothing but drives when I lived in Albany. I had grown up doing drives with relatives but these guys took it to a whole new level. It was all on big woods state land and there were 30 in the group. many times it took more time to go get on watch that it did to get ready to push. These guys were serious and had many rules. There was a lead guy that set out watchers and one that dropped off drivers. while walking to you locations, always in single file line, the only person allowed to have a round chambered was the lead. You didn't move until picked up. We drove whole mountains those years I hunted with them. They really put a lot of deer and bear on the game pole. As we did in our family, everyone helped gut and get them out after the drive and the butchering was done as a group. The meat was split between any participant that wanted it. Over the years we have driven with different tactics. We have used kind of an organized still hunt to the watchers and have been in thick swamps where all the drivers barked or used whistles. usually, Whitetail wont run for long distances if they feel the danger is not immediate or is far enough behind them. take that into consideration when setting out watchers. backing away from the actual piece of land being pushed can give them the time to slow down after their initial burst. This gives you better shots but also can require more watchers to cover all the escape routes.

I actually try to minimize it as well. I just don't try to make a religion out of it. You can go through it all but if a mature deer comes in down wind, chances are you are gonna get busted.

They are only about 12" extended. Most times I am in a box blind with it and that works great on the window openings. If I am out and about with it I have a double trigger stick. I also have a Harris bipod I use on my rifles that will no from probe to sitting. Pretty stable but haven't tried it yet. Biggest issue I have with this gun is finding a holster for it. May have to go custom because of the rifle for end I used.

Would You Support a Blaze Orange Compromise?

There are areas in the NZ with doe permits. Also they probably expect the antlerless take for the ML season. I usually fill my antlerless only up there in early ML. We usually take 4-6 does off the property we hunt. -
Tukeyfeathers is 100% correct

So you think bow hunters and ML hunters can meet the required take for most areas? check out the actual harvest numbers before you answer. -
Growing up I was my fathers flushing dog. I actually retrieved pretty well too. Goes right along with never needing a riding mower or a snow blower until I moved out.

How many acres is this property and how often have you been hunting it? Sounds like you are there at least once a week to check cameras?

When I ran the pheasant preserves to train my dog you had to have HAD a license or a hunters safety class. I believe it was for their insurance requirements but I have no idea if all require it. It is not mandated by the state.

I bet most of us/those that bicker on here would have a bunch of laughs over a few beers and some burgers on the grill.

Speedie is my all time favorite. works equally well on poultry and red meat. -
Skully, was he a DEC Officer or a Ranger. If it was on state land it is likely he was a Ranger, since they only patrol state lands. Mind if I ask what county?

Sounds like those "others" ought to step up their game. So in your view a guy who buys his tags and uses a deer or two a year for themselves, should just quit hunting because others have a hard time shooting a deer? Sounds like entitlement and hunter welfare to me.

I know one guy who gives up eating all meat a month before bow season and keeps with that all through gun. he believes that a carnivore gives off a scent that herbivores can smell more easily. He is a freak with the scent control stuff. And he really doesn't take any more or bigger deer than other guys I know.

That is the law down there isn't it? I don't think they can have Self Serve.
