I always used 300grn Hornady XTP with 100 grains of pyrodex. They hit deer very hard. The XTP's were getting hard to find so I switched to Traditions smack downs this year. 250grn. The bullets look identical to the SST's. The smack downs fly beautiful out of my gun. But I shot a deer with one last week and Im already looking for another bullet. I hit the deer broadside, double lung at about 40 yards. No blood trail and I was lucky to find the deer about 100 yards away. Small hole in small hole out. Same with the lungs. It looked like you stuck your pinky through both lungs. No shock or tearing to them like the XTP's use to do. The bullet definitely didn't expand. Back to 300grn XTP's if I can find them.

The farmer, who owns the place I hunt in Allegheny Co. uses a single shot .223 for deer. He kills deer every year with it . A nice 8 pt. this year. He is an excellent, very patient shot though. He waits for a good shot and drills them through the ribs. If he can't get a good shot, he has no problem letting the biggest buck walk. When he does connect they don't go far at all. Im not sure what load he uses, but knowing him he uses what ever he has on hand. Probably FMJ's

Stoeger's are OK knock about grunt guns. If you don't care about fit and finish and just want a beater to hunt with then the Stoeger is fine. The CZ will cost you double what the Stoeger will, but the looks, fit and finish of the gun are leaps and bounds above Stoeger.

I was running around doing some last minute Christmas things early yesterday afternoon. It was real warm out. About 60 degrees anyway. I was driving South on Rte. 11 in Brewerton. When I approached the bridge, over the river near the Waterfront, I saw 4 or 5 people on the bridge looking East toward Rte 81. They had their phones out taking pictures of something. I slowed down to look . It was a guy water skiing in the river!!! How many people can say that they water skied in New York on Christmas eve???!! Quite a sight.

For the SAFE ACT nonsense to come into play the rifle has to be a semi auto, with a detachable magazine. Lever actions and bolt guns with tubular mags don't even come into play. For now.

Almost 10 AM and their butts are still in bed. My kids are 15, 18 and 20. The 20 year old is home from college. Up until just a couple years ago they would wake us up at the crack of dawn…I had to yell upstairs twice to get them down here….Oh well..still a great day.

Anti fog and scope caps on most of my stuff. But one of my rifles has the scope mounted too low to the barrel, for scope caps to work. When I hunt with it in the snow or rain, I use the zip off hood of one of my water proof hunting coats, to cover the scope, while on watch. It works better than caps..LOL!!

Pouring rain and I had to drag him, by his hind legs, a good 50yards through thick nasty swampy crap, just to get him to an opening where I could turn him around and get the ATV near him. It took over a half hour… Short but miserable drag. I looked worse than the deer.

after two seasons of tag soup and an empty freezer I finally connected the other night. Just a scrub buck but I was glad to break the curse.

Baked chicken, scalloped potatoes and salad. Finally scored a deer the other night so back straps are coming soon!!
