I ride the Quad about 3/4 of the way up the mountain. I then walk about 500 yards up and over to my spot. I've done it this way for the past 12 years and I'll continue to do it this way. It is a tough walk up the mountain and I'm not getting any younger. It is also handy to have the Quad up the mountain, as I use it to haul my deer back to camp.

Received this (crazy) message on the HuntingNY Facebook page...

your response should simply be..."and they are DELICIOUS too" -
I hunt out at Rocky Point and Otis Pike. I have not been out there yet this year. I always hunt mornings. I'm just not willing to take a chance having to track a wounded deer in the dark, so I don't hunt afternoons. I have seen does within range, but no bucks yet. I will only take an 8pt or better with the bow.

Nice Trophy! Congrats. I would like to see the video of you reloading for shots, #2 and #3. LOL

Great job by deer search. An awesome deer and shot by your son.

I pass about 6 dead coons a day on the road. At an avg. price of $10, I'm passing $60 a day laying on the road.

Me fishing on Big Bass Lake last month. -
I was going to recommend the Marlin 30-30 with the reduced recoil load, but I thought about the hammer. Having to gently lower the hamer on a cocked rifle may be a bit tricky for new shooter. That is the gun I started deer hunting with and I still use it today. I never focused much on recoil, too focused on the shot. Reality is they just need to shoot their new gun a few times to get familiar with it, beyond that you really hope they just shoot it once in the woods.

I love Cabela's. It is easily my favorite store. I use their Visa card and accumulate points all year. The downside to the NY store is I will soon have to start paying NY sales tax on internet purchases and the NY store will still be too far to visit.

Nice job by your Brother in law.

Good luck Bowhunters! I may not get out this weekend, save a trophy buck for me.

That bow is likely too much for your 7 y.o. nephew.

I always prefer mornings, bow or rifle. I only hunt mornings with the bow. I don't want to be in a position of having to track a deer in the dark. I'm bowhunting on public state land about an hour drive from my home.

I just sold my son's Diamond Edge. The infinite edge is the newer version. This is a very good bow. You should be able to make all the adjustments yourself with an hex wrench. Just keep practicing. You should be able to work your way up to a suitable velocity to bring down a deer. Practice, practice, practice. Accuracy is much more important than speed.

The members at both clubs are pleasant, but you don't often interact with them. You make your reservation for a field and the amount of birds they should put out for you. Not much time spent in the clubhouse, mostly walking the fields. I made a friend from BU and we hunted our dogs together. We both checked out HG and instantly joined over there and we often hunted our dogs together. I personally can't imagine bird hunting without a dog. Duck hunting might be better for you, as I hunted many years without a dog. You can simply use your duck boat to pick up the downed ducks. You can hunt ducks from a Kayak. You need a hunting dog to find the pheasant or the chuckar. They are incredible at concealing themselves in the grass. You can pay someone to guide you at either club and get an understanding of pheasant hunting with a dog. Fields are always available at HG and most often at BU. I've never seen anyone duck hunt at either club, so don't have any expectations of that happening.

I was a member there 2 years ago. I love pheasant hunting with my dog, just about every weekend in season. Nice guys that run it, I didn't get to socialize too much with other members. The downside to BU is the land is leased from a farmer that is a real pig and doesn't give a damn about the cleanliness of the property. He treats it like a junkyard. You will encounter; wrecked boats, wrecked cars, abandoned machinery and landscaping debris out in the hunting fields. The club officials have been trying to improve this aspect, but it seemed like they were fighting a losing battle. There are only 2 fields to hunt there. I feel bad for the club and the members but there is a better choice. I assume you have a hunting dog. That is what bird hunting is all about. There are few things in life better than walking the fields with my pointer and my shotgun. Last year I joined an amazing club, Hunter's Garden. The grounds are amazing, the owner is a great guy. The setup is top notch. Walking those fields, it is hard to believe that you are still on LI. Bird hunting is an expensive sport, but it is more cost efficient to join a club on LI, than to drive hours to preserves located off the Island.

My biggest was the 9 pointer I shot near Cobleskill. I took him with a 12ga Sabot slug from 80 yds.

The wingspan method is to stand against the wall, arms out like Jesus on the cross, and measure middle finger tip to middle finger tip, have helper make pencil marks and then measure. Divide result by 2.5

Who would have thought a discussion of WB vs. Drop away rest would have gone 7 pages? I'm pretty sure the merits of both have been thoroughly discussed.
-
The Whisker Biscuit is pure genius. A great invention. It is the best hunting rest for the money. If you don't mind spending the money, a drop away like a QAD is slightly better. The deer won't know the difference. I used the WB effectively for years. I only upgraded to the QAD because I wanted to be more accurate on targets. The difference is so minimal.

I sold my son's Diamond Edge Bow, but this one is still available.
