Should I hunt the same stand tomorrow afternoon?
moog5050 replied to regulat0r's topic in Bow Hunting
If the wind is the same, I would hunt it. Good luck. You might have a quick early season. -
I hunted in PA once where a friend of mine set up as Pygmy described shooting 550yds at a hillside/ridge. He killed a doe at that distance the year before. While it was impressive, it didn't seem much like hunting as we were standing and talking while he glassed and would point out a deer asking if I wanted to shoot it. No chance of me taking a shot that long. It seemed more like range shooting than hunting. Certainly not the adrenaline rush like a deer 10yds away. You do have to be skilled to dope the wind and make the shot, that's for sure.

I would hunt the leeward or downwind side 1/3 from top. You will likely find used trails there. Obviously, take note of other sign too. Its just a general observation. Also, if there are any points off the ridge, or benches, you may find bedding there.

Not sure of the height of the ridge or direction, but 1/3 down from the top of the leeward side is a good place to start. Hunt high mornings and low in the evenings due to thermals. Good luck!

Why no rifles in some shotgun only areas

My understanding is must. -
Good luck. Hope you find it.

possible hunting partner wanted?
moog5050 replied to aqua750's topic in Land For Sale, Lease, and Requests
But you put together the idea of labor in return for permission as equating to compensation which would remove the relationship from GOL coverage. You are lawyer, license or not - moral code notwithstanding. lol -

I think Culver may be taking the bar soon. lol -
Why no rifles in some shotgun only areas
moog5050 replied to Borngeechee's topic in Rifle and Gun Hunting
The funny thing is that even in those areas where its shotgun only, if you are out on a nuisance permit, you must use a rifle. How does that jive with the logic of shotgun only during open season? I have no idea. Apparently only snipers kill deer with nuisance permits. -
Not that hard to build your own arrows. But not sure if its much of a cost savings over time if that's the goal. I enjoy it and at least I know my vanes are staying put. Plus you can try different configurations and see what flies best for you. I just recently moved to 4 fletch with rt helical mini blazers. Love the way they fly. If I didn't build my own, I probably would not have tried it.

I picked up a compound for the first time 2 weeks before my first season. I was able to kill 3 that first year. I don't think I have any special talent. Rather, I really don't think its all that tough to become reasonably proficient with a modern compound bow in a short time if you practice. I know I had 3" groups or less at 20yds before the season started that first year. That said, if you are missing a plate 70% of the time at 20yds, you should not be hunting with a bow. That person is not reasonably proficient with a bow and is very likely to wound vs. kill deer. I just don't think its ethical. I am not criticizing the kids for practicing, but they need more of it before flinging an arrow at a deer. IMHO.

I had one and sold it buying instead a canon to film hunts. Due to its fisheye lens, you need to be really close to see the subject on film. 20yds looks like 100yds on that cam. I understand it can be corrected through editing but I never went that far as I didn't consider it ideal for filming hunts. It is a cool cam though.

I find out the sex of my baby today!!!!

Congrats - my daughter is way more interested in hunting than my son so you never know. -
merino wool is awesome. warm, comfortable, wicks moisture and doesn't hold odor. I use the minus 33 stuff. not cheap, but you really only need one set and they will last.

I thought we still have 8 more stands to set - oh never mind....

Might have to try this. Don't glue my nocks but have had some that are not as tight as I would like. Thanks for the tip.

Unless you requested otherwise, most shops will do a straight fletch with cock vane at 12pm for a compound bow.

That is a cool pic

Makes sense to me but not sure its the same deer
-
Black nose ring looks a lot darker between those two. I would guess no, but not sure how much coat color changes can occur over 2 years. First deer looks like a 1.5. Second deer looks like a good 2.5 or average 3.5, but based on body, I am inclined to say 2.5. Of course, deer are different where I hunt vs. Vermont.

Either 340-350 with 100g heads or 300 with 125g heads should work for you. I prefer to error on the side of stiffer arrows. I will bet that even 300 with 100g will fly well out of your bow if the bow is tuned well.

Welcome. Hope you have some success before surgery and good luck with the surgery.
