With the snow melt off it is time to get the bow out again and dust it off. Whitney point sportment will have it first shoot on April 10. They also make a outstanding breakfast. The next weekend it is the Oxford NY rod and gun club April 17. I always make sure I shoot them. I will be coming back for APril 1 from down south so please make sure all the snow is gone. The weather here today is sunny and 74 degree for a temp. If you are in central NY AREA go to www.tollgatearchery.com and will find a lot of the local clubs schedule of shoots.I also suggest you find a local club and join a club so you can have and make life long friends.Nothing like shooting with several good friends, can not only shoot but retell those hunting stories' Each year the horns get bigger and your shots get greater as well as your skill. good shooting to you all Bill

The closest place is in North Pharsalia NY off of route 23. The name of the road is One EYe road. 7500 acreas os state land that is ade up of about 50% is red pine. The white rabbits are not even a lot there as they log the red pine, but never replant, so the trees get to big and no food for the rabbits. This area is part of the snow belt and gets 150+ inches of snow per year. No a lot of hunters for rabbit of either brown or white in the area. I lived on this road and also it was my hunting camp in the past for over 20 years. I use to go all the way to black lake to hunt white and brown both, we over the weekend with 8 dogs use to come home with 4 guys taking a bunch 30 + on a weekend. But they tell me that is also on the down side now. But what runs it use to be. My dogs were out of the wind creek limbo. I belonged to the Whitney point beagle club.

nothing like a good dog to hunt both the brown or white rabbits with. If I did not go south for 3 months each winter I sure would be on the buy list to have one. I for years raised beagle pups myself. As a pet they sure will become a member of the family and as a hunting dog you can not miss with them for the love of the hunt. I also am a prior Orange county guy, lived in Walden NY for several years. Worked at IBM Fishkill NY, IBM Manassas VA, ENdicott NY and retired from IBM Glenndale lab at Endicott NY.

sound like a good time. I did camp in the past with a tent, but now 69 my days of laying on the ground are about over. I now love the finer things, a bed, shower, and Tv after hunting and or just going to a 3D shoot like Coudersport PA for the traditional shoot and or love the WHitney point sportmen shoots, go to there once a month.

To bad they do not ask that we all put your county down so we can see who is in our area. I am Outside Oneonta NY and the county is Delware. any other from this area.

never able to master the bow. With a rifle you sight in and with a scope you are one year after year. With abow you had better practice day after day to increase your skill level. After 55 years I finally am in the 2nd stage of childhood and it due to the bow and all the fun you can have.

last weekend we got another foot. That was the low end, if you were higher in the catskill mtn you may have gotten even more. The Oneonta reported that downtown they got 19 inches. This week it shows several days of over 32 degree and some days of rain showers to by the weekend it may be down to less than a foot on the ground. A lot are asking when will it end this year. I just am asking for some brown ground in spots. This is not a good year for the deer.

Due to the low peak weight of the bow 42 lbs I would suggest a 100 gr target point and 10 gr fix blade cut on contact BH Muzzy or Wasp. That should her take that first big buck. I do not recomment the closed in flight BH's with the lower weight. I myself use fixed blade as I am now at only 56 lbs.

I just went out of the archery busines ( retired) I have used the bemen hunter in both the 500 and 400 size. Not the most dollars for a doz but they always seemed to work great for me. They now have carbon arrows that are .001 at $150 doz, but for most of hunters the .006 will shoot just as well. Just think back and capare them to the old wood arrows I use to shoot out of my recurve and the new carbons and my god what a upgrade in performance.

Snowshoes? Do You Use Them?
sweet old bill replied to Mr VJP's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
I use to have to use them when hunting white rabbits with the beagles. I have 3 sets that I keep ready for use. 1 set bear paw, 1 set of trail shoe and 1 set of for woods trail set. they all work great but you sure should not plan on being on them for several hours the first few weekend. They will tire you out, to walk you should not lift your legs but just shuffle. -
Heres what happened when I tried to go hunting.....
sweet old bill replied to NYBowhunter's topic in General Chit Chat
Joe....Thats in Unit 4F, Deleware county....about 20 minutes east of Oneonta. With all this snow, doesnt look good for the deer this year........the snow has been around too long and drawn out. I am down south till April 1, but they got hit again for another foot last week. I am 12 miles east of Oneonta in the town of Franklin. The snow pack I am told is very bad and I fear the deer herd, waht left of it will be hurt. -
so if you put a hunter every 100 yards and walk across the hill then the hunters on the botton of the hill should see more deer. Sounds like something we al new from putting on deer drives over the years.

I started going with my Dad to a farm in the catskills and we would go up friday night. On sat and sun we would get in firewood for the week and also make sure the guns were good to go for Monday morning. It was a total of less than 5 in camp and like a lot of you, there was always good fun, talking about past years of great shots and also those that were not so great. They also all had a day to cook there special treats. Me as being the youngest was part of the clean up detail. We also had a old shed to hang thedeer and clean them. Would do after dinner with a drink of wine or beer. Each then telling there tales of the day, were they had sat, amount of deer seen, tracks etc and of course how they go there deer. I know I was in my first year of hunting, had purchased a 303 British enfield from a Ramsey outdoors in Paramus NJ in July for $35 dollars, that was my grass cutting money from the period of May and June. I redid the stock and it had flip up iron sight for long shots or just buck horn for close shots. It was after 420 pm and was getting read dark and this deer came out, got to be about 35 yards from me and I then could see the horns. I just layed that 303 on the side of a maple tree and trigged off the shot. The deer ran about 60 yards and dropped. My Dad called over and sked if I had taken the shot and need help. I sure did need help, it also was the first time I was to clean a deer. Well that night the guys all give me hand shakes on getting a big 6 point buck. That was 50 years ago and I can see that deer walking out just as clean today as it was then as well as My best Buddy my Dad and his buddies. There have been many more deer in my lifetime with gun and bow but that was the first.

I am sure in your area thee has to be some bow archery pro shop that have indoor range and also some local archery club. Try to find one and ask them for there recommendations. I have been shooting for over 50 years now and enjoy it just as I did as a kid. We all have to learn how to handle the bow, the more you shoot the better you will become. But it sure does help if you have someone that can be your mentor.
