I moved from that area about 6 years ago. My other house was on One EYe road in North Pharsalia, my land backed up to the 7500 acreas of state land. If you plan on bow hunting you should do well, the deer herd is on the way back in the area. You will not see a lot of pressure in the state woods but come opending day of gun the orange tide is in from NYS and parts North. Lots of people pushing deer in the area. I sure miss hunting there were I am now no open land and or state land. Everthing posted and no one gives you permission unless you are family. good luck and I am sure you will do good. Lots of the area also had old apple trees and semi open fields. I do recommend in Spet you take a weekend to just scout the area for opening day of bow. I always used naturla ground blinds and did well over the years.

for feather the fletch type tape is better than just about anything once you get used to how to use it. simple and can do a doz arrows in about a hour. just have to put a drop of duco cement on the front and back of the feather as a final step so you do not lose feather if you get a pass thru. I have found arrows a year later that the feather still required a razor blade to get off the shaft...

That feeling is starting to take over!
sweet old bill replied to First-light's topic in Deer Hunting
put up two ground blinds and yesterday when I shoot my 3D course I shot target 4 and as I walked up saw a movement in a pine tree. I stopped and what walked out was a fawn and as I went to get my arrs from the target, there come mom to make sure her fawn was ok...I see some of the trees are already starting to show the first stage of fall. -
Premade Shed for Quad advice?
sweet old bill replied to UpStateRedNeck's topic in ATV's , UTV's, Dirtbikes & Snowmobiles
the china continers seem to be a good way to go. I have seen on another site a guy got 3 of those for next to nthing except the cost to move to his site and he made them into a hunting camp. At my camp I had just a small alum building that would hold the 3 wheel big red and a hand gas mower. I had a 7 foot rod put into the side and had a heavy duty chain go thru the big red so no one if they broke in could walk off with it. Never did have a problem. Used it for over 10 years. Then had a guy give me a car port for a single car that over a weekend I had several old windows to close it up and made a 8 foot front door. -
I use to with my bow shop buy direct from a deer farm and repackage from 1 gal plastic jugs to 4 0z bottles. I would get the deer scent with a a week of it being made. The mfg said the key to what to buy is never get scrent that was not fresh. He also suggested I store in a kool place., I also was told to tell hunter not to store on the dash board of there truck or car, as in very hot temps it will start to break down. I use to kid with guys coming just to the shop for the deer scent never to carry in there back pocket and or I would not be responsible for any damage to them. I also found most guys want to buy the sex type doe and that is not the way to go, excent in the cash period of the rut. Other times you do just as well to use buck scent or just plain doe as cover scent. I use to use q-tips from a scrape I found to pass my ground blind or tree stnad. Over the years I was able to take several bucks using this process. So for me scrent works, now on the other hand I have never had any buck come walking in for my grunt call, how about you ????

I have not seem a good mast crop in years. I do not think in most of the areas of 7 we have a lot of Oaks. Now when I lived down south in VA and had a hunt campo in west Va they have loads of Oak and if you find a white oak that the place to hunt. NOw in Oneonta I do have on the rad two Oaks ( red) and 3 years ago they had some and for about 3 weeks as you dreove down the road even at mid day you would push off the raod a doe or two. Last year in my area we had a good mast of the beach tree, but I never did see that this caused a lot of interest in the deer. They stayed right with the corn till it was cut off. I use to live for ab out 10 years over the hill from you in North Pharsalia and never found a Oak tree in the state woods.

Tree Stand Up
sweet old bill replied to WNYBuckHunter's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
what does tree stand up do ????? does it help in getting the stand in place and or is it for security of the stand once up ???? -
the average cost has gone up about 30% per year for the last 5 years or so. It use to be a top of the line bow was in the 300 to 400 dollar range. Now it close to 1000 to 1200 and that bare bow, then add a sight 120, a 1uiver can be from 65 to 100, a drop a way rest from a low of 45 to over 100...then lets try arrow carbon from a sale [price of 50 dollar a doz to now it can be 150 dollar doz. They sure make it hard on the end customer. I also buy used fro archery talk, seems in Jan as the new bows come out you can get a left over from a shop for 65% of what they had it for and or a lightly used one for about half or less with sight and rest...

nothing like a new bow and getting it ready for the hunt...good luck and hope that big buck walks past....

Think there is going to be a early rut this year?
sweet old bill replied to Buckfever85's topic in Deer Hunting
Pre rut Oct 10 thru Oct 29 Rut Nov 1 thru Nov 19 Just kidding who know it all deoend on the number of weather fronts that come thru and reduce the amount of light. I ue to buy deer lure that was mfg in NY and the farmer would set the lights in the barm in July to reduce the light so the doe would change over in later Julyt so he could collet doe in rut pee. -
Hi all the licence go on sale this Monday and of course being alife time licence holder I still have to go one more time to pay for my bow stamp....after Nov 5, they will be all free ( 70 )....unless they of course change the requirments to make up lost of dollars coming...

I have had the life time lic for about 8 years now and never got one.

Based on the number of fawn bones I found in our pasture I think they should be a open season on them. If you are in the woods and see one shoot it. Maybe even have a DEC bounty on them. Have the DEC put out chemicals to kill them off.

Mechanical or fixed broadheads?
sweet old bill replied to Forest Hunter's topic in Hunting Gear Reviews and Gear Discussions
I shoot 3 blade fixed BH's, as I now shoot only 56 lbs at 29 inch draw. It use to be that under 60 lbs a closed in flight BH may not open, but now in today market after 12 years or so of testing I think they all will work. I just love the new smaller Bh.s that are fixed blade and they fly like a dart for me. I have 3 that I use to shoot at a BH target when we get closer to the start of the season. I pratice with them. -

To spray or not to spray
sweet old bill replied to Eslerman's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I talked to several people that have made food plots and some say na why spend the $$$. Others told me and also Iwhen I read it sure seems a step to take to keep the weeds down and give you a better foood plot. I am interested to see what feedback you get. I had made several food plots years ago on a old logging raod and just put in the seed after usinga steel rake. I got a mixed bad of food plot and also some very mixs of weeds. -
I got out of the af in 1964 and then worked and lived in Walden and was a member of the Walden archery and gun club. ALways some great areas to hunt. Great photo's and hope they will stay there for the hunt season...

I had a customer for years that would have out several that he used a dripper on and also had cam on them to see what bucks were using the scrapes. He said key was using rubber gloves to handle the dripper and also when you use a small rake to start the scrape. He also said the must activity was on the edges to pastures or old logging roads. But again that is also the normal travel routes. They use to sell scrape juice that came in a 6 0z package that you would mix with a full gal of water to make buck pee. That what he used...

Starting out with bowhunting. looking for some advice/help.
sweet old bill replied to Hunting18's topic in Bow Hunting
If the bow eels good in your hand and has a easy draw cycle and is user friendly that the bow you want. It is not having the fastest setup but one that works for you. I had a bow shop for years and a good middle of the bow range that had a cast riser, good limbs and good setup of the arrows match the bow will shoot as well in most cases as the top of the line bow. Or if you must have the new hot bow look for sales in archerytalk.com. you can get a new bow or lightly used one for about 1/3 off... -
said a prayer for her. Let us know how she is doing.... Bill
