  1. Im stopping by Dicks today for 1C and 3M tags for my father and I.
  2. I don't think its necissary for deer hunting. Deer have poor eye sight so anything earth tone will do the job and flannel is just fine. For turkey I am wearing head to toe camo. Now I do wear head to toe camo for deer hunting but thats becasue most of my best hunting clothes are camo. Early in the season I do wear some flannel jac shirts that are pretty nice.
  3. Id try to circle around him at a good distance. I actually would do it so he would see me and not shoot in my direction. I might even bump some deer to him.
  4. The answer is yes for me. There are a lot of variables you can not take into account when shooting at a deer so anything can happen. NFA-ADK knows how well ive been shooting and I still missed a doe Thursday. All you can do is practice shooting and try to increase the percentages. Pick your self up and get back out there! You did your part in looking for that deer.
  5. I actually hit a branch that I didnt see that caused me to go right under the doe. I was busted, and my body was in a bad positon from sitting on a bucket for a few hours. Everyone has to miss time to time
  6. Thanks grampy! This makes number 3 with a bow, but for some reason I love to chase them on the ground with a shotgun.
  7. Youre welcome to come down by me. I have a flock of at least 30 every year that are almost too easy to set up on. Im usually too busy deer hunting to bother going after them in the fall
  8. Been a tough year for me so far. The neighbors are doing work 50 yards from my stand so it’s sort of killing my best early spot. I’ve only seen one deer from that spot in 3 morning sits when I usually see 4 or 5 before 9 each time I sit there. I did figure out another area where the deer have been mid day and at the end of the day in the apple orchard. I had to sit in the grape vines to get a shot and when they’re there, they’re right in top of you. Missed a nice doe yesterday at 5 so I’m hoping they’ll still be there come Sunday. I did however get a turkey at 8 am which was a nice consolation prize for being out. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  9. Thats what im saying. Isnt that the time frame the op was giving?
  10. Depends on the shot and the temperature, but its definitely do able. One time I thought my shot was a little worse than it was and after an hour wait, I found it 40 yards from the shot and the meat was perfectly fine.
  11. Definitely not the sharpest tool in the shed, but I wouldnt call him a scumbag.
  12. Ill eat liver and heart, but thats as far as it goes. I don't even want to handle brains, due to the desieses.
  13. Low probablity shot for me so its a no from me. Now if a big buck walks up and gives me that shot, I hope I can pass. I did pass my biggest buck 2 years ago becuase it gave me a quarter too shot and I wasnt comfortable with it
  14. Nothing for me. I do my own processing and sealing so I never have to pay
  15. Sorry to hear about your father WNY. I hope you kill a buck of a lifetime with that rifle this year!
  16. I agree, I think passing based on age is a much better option than passing based on antler points. Unfortunately some hunters get a tunnel vision when they see a deer.
  17. Maybe it didnt come across the way I hoped for, but basically I was saying that AR's help promote the passing of 1.5 year olds. Yes some 1.5 year olds have more than 3 points on one side, but a lot dont. The best way to do it is to let 1.5 year olds go, but some hunters arent able to tell 1.5 vs a 2.5 yo.
  18. There are a lot of things that go into seeing big deer. I disagree with wfmiller about it not being the proper way. Its probably the easiest way to ensure the deer gets bigger, thats if it isnt killed by a neighbor. There is a risk of not getting a buck every year, but you'll have to decide if its worth it. You have to also be realistic in whats big for your area. Don't pass deer expecting itll result in a shot at a 160" deer. May never happen in your area. I say by all means try it for a few years and see if it helps at all. Ive seen AR's work wonders, but usually in a larger scale. Won't hurt the quality of bucks by passing on them so at least itll either do nothing or help out.
  19. I bought a regular freezer that looks like a fridge. I picked that over a chest because it was easier for me to organize the meat and pick it out with out moving around too many things. Its the frost free kind because I hate dealing with an ice build up and having to defrost it time to time. I dont think it reallt makes a differnce with well packed meat. I use a vaccum sealer so I havent seen a difference in the quality of the meat. I havent seen any go below 0 degrees, but I think the commercial freezers will get down that low.
  20. Personally I make that decision in the moment. I shoot plenty of doe every year so I don't feel the need to shoot a buck I wont be happy with. I havent shot a buck since 2015 and I wont care much if I don't get a buck this year. Now If im out In Long Island on public land and its the end of the season, ill probably take any buck that walks by. Im more than happy just killing does though. The meat is just as good.
  21. Im with First-Light on this one. Enjoy every second because before you know it, were in the off season day dreaming about hunting. Sometimes ill get on my phone here and there, but genreally I try to stay off of it.
  22. The biggest problem is that its increasingly harder to hunt on the Island. State lands get hit pretty hard, but the suburbs dont, and thats where the largest increase is coming.
  23. I think you still have to follow the same dmp applications as the rest of the state. Could be wrong though
