  1. Our farm land is a half hour or so away from there 116 acres, about $2500 a year in taxes . Your friend should be paying a grand or so , not a lot really .
  2. That would get one 16 acres around me
  3. Chicago airport United Club , on the way to Alaska . We’ll see how much im down in two weeks .
  4. Ok I paid low six figures for my kids college ,through sacrifice and discipline, my wife and i had zero college and two very middle class jobs btw . While my coworkers drove new pick ups ,had built in pools, new snowmobiles etc , but had their kids take out loans on stupid majors , I kinda feel I did the right thing as I knew starting them out in debt would make it hard for them . Where’s mine ? Same income as my coworkers , not as nice a home though …. if you want to change things do it going forward , not mid stream , that always creates problems .
  5. I wear longjohns and pants ,but I’m a he/him .
  6. Many years ago my friend shot the tail clean off a doe . But it was running directly away from him and hit it in the back of the head as well . I went over saw the wound in the back of its head and asked what he was shooting at ? He said ,” ah … the vitals .” Then I walked over and picked up the tail . So perhaps someone shot it off at a weird angle ,and didn’t hit anything else ?
  7. Hey leave us out of this ! Ill never forget when our oldest who was in high school at the time looked up my salary, then asked for a better phone or some such thing .
  8. Used a 8 inch Dan Wesson .44, for a few years, worked just fine , but most of my gun kills aren’t that far ,bow range plus . My only concern was seeing a large buck to far for my abilities with it .
  9. Interesting . Our youngest , was a TA, she taught three accounting classes , while working on her masters and studying for and getting a 96 on the first part of the CPA exam all at the same time . The feed back from her students was remarkable, they learned more from her then any professors, she made sure they knew the material etc. I said maybe you should be a professor? she had zero interest, even though they don’t work very much , and she was good at it . maybe 30 or so,years ago, Rochester went they pay them more route . It was a National story how this would change things , with such high pay it would surely attract better teachers . We’re now the worst district in the country , ok maybe second I’m not quite sure but we’re at the bottom .
  10. Two of the things making it hard . The spiraling out of control cost of college coupled with employers requiring degrees for entry level learn as you go type jobs. Mrs nomad has zero college . She started at the VA , in accts rec. they taught her what she needed, from there to a local manufacturer again in accts rec. as a credit analyst. After a bunch of years promoted to credit administer . Towards the end she would always say she could never get these jobs today, they want a degree for an entry level customer service job ,taking parts orders over the phone . Totally unnecessary and putting folks in debt for what ? It’s a vicious cycle, you get college folks raising up to hiring positions and since they had to go, they only hire others who were sucked in as well . time for a cigar ,some gin and the Allman brothers in the garage !
  11. I agree ! As someone who worked with ladders and had to choose the correct height for the job in a few seconds I developed a good eye , I can attest that I’ve seen, many guys who’s stands were several feet lower then they said . Skilled trades are a good choice but it can be a slow climb up , well five years ,that’s good if one starts at 18-20 a bit challenging if one starts at 30 has a wife and a house like my son in law . That pipe fitter must be working a TON of OT most union trade jobs that I’m aware of around here too pay is upper thirties an hour . If I had to do,it over I’d have joined the military at 18, then took all the cop and firefighter tests I did, but had veterans points which would have either got me on sooner, or saved and used on promotion tests. I also would have done reserves while on the FD so after 20 another pension . I ton of guys I worked with did that and the dept is very accommodating with leave time .
  12. You don’t go to the baseball thread I take it . St Louis Cardinals since ‘67 when I watched the World Series with my grandfather after school . We go to Pitts every year when cards are in town , and occasionally St Louis ,we were there a few years back when they locked up first place beating the cubs in the last series of the year .
  13. I’d like to see student loans run like most all others . Look at the value of the degree, it’s cost and the likely ability of the borrower to pay it back . Oh and a trip to Cancun during school will trigger an immediate recall of the loan . Buy a house the bank appraises it , checks your credit, other debts, job history then decides if and how much they will loan . Car very similar, business loan ,let’s see your business model to start .
  14. We had two priorities money wise ,retirement and our kids college . We stayed in our modest home , drove used cars till they died, and I invested my yearly holiday pay into their 529, along with any birthday and Christmas money they received. Many at work ,lived in nicer homes, drove new pick ups and saddled their kids in debt, at private schools and history ,photography, and fashion merchandising majors . Their choice . We said state schools and a major you can actually find employment in . I may have to double lock my rifles as this may just drive my wife to the rooftops .
  15. One step in the right direction, still a few days for the injunction,on the rest .
  16. I love these, super comfy, wider and beefier beams and most importantly two points of contact with the tree and two straps ,for a solid hook up . Although this pic is different then mine , mine have two serrated V ‘s that contact the tree and each straps to the tree . my mesh seats have been in the woods for years zero issues , but I bought extras for down the road ,if I’m still hunting when they need replacement . Same as my patio furniture, been outside maybe 15 years ,good as day one . I’ve got other large stands with just one point of contact , not a fan at all of that ,my little $50 Moog specials are more solid then those .
  17. I use sound, in the morning I can hear the kids playing at the bus stop and in the afternoon, lawnmowers ,leaf blowers and gun guys practicing after work .
  18. Lol , kidding ….. as well as pointing out that some guys never learn and stock up , which absolutely stuns me , to be frank . There’s a fair number of members here I’ve bought ammo for ,as I have a source that has been well stocked all though the shortage . I’ve also sent guys for free, knives, broadheads, like new Lacrosse boots, one guy I sent at my cost boxes of old ammo as he collects it , yesterday I went shopping for reduced recoil 308 for a member who’s son can only tolerate that load . off to work on my next misguided revenge scheme
  19. Yep, I was at sportsman warehouse in Henrietta yesterday . More 308 then any other rifle caliber ,even had some Fusions although not much , no reduced recoil , that’s a pretty specific request in these times .
  20. I had a guy on my crew who was one of the best cooks in the FD . My last night of work I could have requested anything ( he ruined me for restaurants for the most part btw ) I asked for his beans and greens, he adds Italian sausage, and we severe it over ziti , with garlic bread . I’ll have to try the Utica style someday , looks very similar.
  21. We’ve a crab feast booked, but no pizza one was offered . In 1988, I passed through Juneau, stayed at an old hotel that had a shared bathroom down the hall , and one of those old girly paintings over the bar .
  22. Sounds racist . Never even seen one though . But in a week or so I’ll report back on Alaskan pizza , perhaps that’ll unite upstate downstate pizza guys against a common enemy .
  23. Very interesting thread . I enjoy seeing what others use and why , I’ve never owned a range finder or shooting sticks yet some put them at the top of their list . Must me a Larry thing , but I never go,in the woods without binoculars ,ever . But in farm county I may want to see what that deer is at 500 yards, or even a better look at a rack in thick stuff 50 yards off,or a trespasser across the field . I’ll always have binos, knife, flashlight, and a bandanna, actually the last three everyday all day year round , add a cheap combo rifle and glass , Muck boots and I’m ready for deer season .
