  1. I don’t feel I raised a quitter . In fact someone smart enough to see there was a far better use of her time , fall ball, summer ball, year round weight room, practice, for what amounts to a few minutes of court time . She ran the numbers once , I forget but it was many hours of that for each minute of court time . Even then she was destined to be a successful CPA , “ Dad the numbers don’t make any sense.”
  2. I hope the best for you and your daughter , and that it works out in the best possible way . I however am with Steve ,on youth sports . I was actually happy when our youngest quit varsity basketball her senior year .
  3. Correction I got married at 28 , got on FD at 31 . Either become an EMT and work on an ambulance while taking the tests, or joint the military , then he’ll have veterans points to add to his testing score along with the veterans benefits. We have many who were firefighters in the Air Force , and still are in the reserves . If Albany’s test isn’t for a couple years, joining the military and coming home for the test should work well . Theres generally separate tests for city , county and airport , take them all .
  4. No idea , it was a few years ago, the retired co worker just inherited it , I ran into him after several years, and he told me he now owned it and invited me back . Near Penn line and some big chicken farm . Do you think I’d tell you actual area or pertinent facts .....
  5. My advice is learn The residency requirements, then just keep taking the tests. At 18 just work and keep taking the tests, and do whatever will give him an advantage, ie become an emt , volunteer, have a back up plan . College, trades whatever . I got on at age 28 ! I wish I started trying at 18 !!!!! If he learns and follows the rules at some point he should make it . Trouble is at 18 getting on at 25 seems like a lifetime away ,it’s not . I wish I was there to mentor the kid, maybe become an Emt and work on an ambulance, then just keep taking the fire tests, that’s what many here do . good luck to him
  6. The “ Rochester “ area is Monroe county, while no hunting in Roch. The rest of the county is awesome . And gun hunting for the most part .
  7. Ya buddy has a camp there, some of the guys are mostly poachers , one guy took 20 deer . They posted me up and right on schedule deer came out , filled my tags . I may go back this year ....
  8. Nomad

    Beer

Three heads Suspended Particle, 2x then Gin and tonics . Have not worn shoes or a shirt in two days ! I’m the only guy who mows the lawn without a shirt, my Dad and all the neighbors never wore a shirt home in the summer . God won’t post pics again .
  9. When you’re get back the emphasis was on getting the rig and tools back in order, saws cleaned and fueled, masks cleaned . By The time that was done you were no longer sweaty, so many would just wash their face maybe put on a clean t shirt . If it was night time I’d just want to grab some Z’s, then shower after my morning workout . Daytime same thing along with eating something , so, I’d shower at home later . You’ll smell smoke as you shower for a couple days after . when I started no one really knew much about the cancer risk ,today they learn about it and steps to take in the academy to lessonthe risk ,also the dept issues two sets of goods and you can have them laundered anytime .
  10. Don’t over think it . My first box blind I built at work , with a Marine that killed many towel heads ,he set the height of the windows based upon sitting on a chair . It’s worked fine ,it’s not like you’re shooting deer close out of it . our second one again we based upon sitting in a chair , but sitting up straight or crouching down it’s no big deal .
  11. Ya , 44 years of bringing deer home in cars and mini vans before I bought a truck ( mostly to tow with ) lifting deer into the bed is harder . I don’t see much of any advantage, of a p/u for hunting . its mostly some perceived image thing . enjoy your truck .
  12. It’s not the same .... there’s no “L” in mine . itll be different in a couple weeks ,I’m thinking M00G 50/50 . video is not showing for me anymore , odd . https://www.woodtv.com/news/allegan-county/video-deer-enjoys-day-at-the-beach/
  13. I hear hunters have bought up all the available sunscreen , for the upcoming season .....
  14. It’s Nov 2, the written part , the physical part will be 6-8 weeks after ,followed by, your background ( done by the PD, about 40 hours) interviews , Drs exam and so forth . You’ll need a clean background , including good credit score, clean driving record ,work and school history . Now the list is good for four years, the current list has no one on it to hire anymore, in other words if you passed with a 70 and had a good background you got hired, contrast that to when I got on ,I had a 94 on the test and was nervous if I’d make it ! So few take it today .... Now if you loved playing sports, you’ll love the job, teamwork ,physical job and all that , if you were military please take it, you get points towards score as well , you’ll love it , command structure, team oriented, sogs and all that . Firefighters ( rank of) are making in the ‘80s once at full pay ,pension and healthcare . I went out as an LT , 113k my final year . the info is on the cities web page , and you need to be a city resident 90 days prior to the physical exam which will fall mid Dec. You’ll need to sign up soon , so get that city address ...... Now the down side , I have two close friends with seriously broken backs, a few with broken legs, ribs and arms . Expect to retire with a limp, or some sort of joint issues , not unlike any other physical job. I made it out ,with only a few joint issues, 8 or so trips to the emergency room and one surgery on my spine . Cancer is my biggest fear , we get it at a rate far above the general public, but we only had on set of goods, never washed them ,and I never showered after a fire, or put my mask on till my eyes and lungs were burning , they’re smarter today ...... Honestly, if you’re now or soon can be a city resident, give it some thought . You’ll work, nights ,weekends and holidays and love every day of it . The last list and this next one will be THE ones to be on they can’t keep up with retirements, and the number of test takers is down. Good luck.
  15. Hope they lose, Rapinoe is a low class pos .
  16. Nice night TF . I wouldn’t go in that crowd for free drinks and food all night , but that’s me . I like people , just not around me .... Red Wings game was sold out tonight , we got in an outfield suite, that they opened up for overflow ,had it pretty much to ourselves . Decent fireworks after . Parked at Truck Tens quarters , good thing I took truck had to hop curb, drive down sidewalk squeeze into last spot , normal city driving .
  17. If you don’t care where you are, you can never be lost .
  18. So awhile back a nest was built on a light by our patio . And I watched two Robbins come and go sitting on it , the eggs hatched and a couple weeks later the hatchlings flew off . Then a couple weeks after , adult Robbins were again sitting on the nest , today I saw hatchlings, and at one point had two adult birds feeding them at the same time . Most often one would fly off the nest and the second would swoop down off a branch and take its place on the nest, very odd . Did they each lay eggs there ? Or perhaps a lesbian couple ....
  19. Looks like they have 3.3 million barrels in various warehouses ,so no interruptions in supply . Ive never needed grief consulting after a fire, this might have been an exception.
  20. Stock up now there’s going to, be a chink in the supply chain ..... https://wnep.com/2019/07/03/massive-fire-at-jim-beam-facility-may-have-destroyed-45000-barrels-of-bourbon/
  21. Every day is a holiday for me .... May go to Red Wings game as they have their largest fireworks display tonight. Easy parking, the fireworks are right there , not like the cities display tomorrow, crowds ,traffic and perhaps a few shootings . I hated working nights on the Forth, nonstop runs, drunks and fools .
  22. As much as I’m not a yankee fan at all , this really hit me . http://www.silvershieldfoundation.org/ Started by George Steinbrenner in 1,982 paid for the education of children of NYPD and FDNY killed in the line of duty , sadly that number is 800 . Since many young kids struggle after the parents death, they also pay for counselors and tutoring in time of need . Im going to send them a check, as long as it isn’t made out to the Yankees ..... Now if only the Cards could start hitting !
  23. I don’t know if that means you don’t carry any survival items or just a dedicated pack / pouch . Anyways every lost hunter or day hiker that required a search and rescue crew to find them said pretty much the same thing . This gal, went for a three mile hike in a park on a trail, 17 days later she was found . She got turned around and slipped down a ravin , apparently it’s very thick and easy to do there . (CNN)A woman who survived 17 days in a forest in Hawaii after she got lost while hiking says she was irresponsible for going into the woods unprepared. I have a friend who fell, out of a stand preseason, ( trimming branches ) broke his femur ,couldnt move, no phone,no whistle , no light or any way to signal for help . One can taylor their items for the area, although the basics tend to stay the same . Bob I agree, when I used to turkey hunt ,when I was done I’d pretend ok I fell out of the tree I’m leaning against , and using only materials I could reach build a fire . Once I walked into, the woods with my normal, pocket load out and spent the night . Built simple lean too, made fire, “ slept “ on a trash bag stuffed with leaves .
