  1. 30 years ago , I started hunting “ my spot “ ,no clue ,hung my first tree stand , no idea why I chose that tree . Killed my first bow deer out of it first year , and many since turned out to,be great spot. No stand there today ,but my daughters stand another awesome spot is close by , can kill, deer out of her Stand year after year .
  2. I did last year When his happened ,and sent them $100, signed up,new members and worked a day for them at an event . Ive a feeling this time it’ll cost me more, but I’ll put it towards new members ,memberships . oh and I’ve already cleaned the truck and put away my hunting gear ,done . Now I’m going out in late season with xbow and killing another buck .
  3. Mine used a 20 ga 870 . Then I bought her. savage 7mm08 . Sweet gun and round . I shot a buck with her gun last year and a coyote. This year I have my own Savage 7mm08 .shot a buck and a doe. Of those three deer, each one dropped in its tracks, not even a death run . Bang ,Flop . Great round , easy to handle recoil . Im sure there are others , but I’ve no need to look for them .
  4. Hum, my first year bowhuning was 1,988 Golden Eagle bow, finger tab, two blade ,feathers , little flipper rest ( look like a piece of paper clip ) . Killed a buck at 8 yards . Since then killed many , only years I didn’t was because passed up many waiting for “ the right one “ which never showed . My kills average under 20 yards . Never once busted “ drawing “ which is very little movement ,one arm moving straight back what 15 inches ? Where guys get busted is standing up ,reaching for the bow, turning back ,raising the bow , then say they were busted “ drawing .” All those other movements are required of the xbow as well, and after using one two years now, I’d say they require more exaggerated movements due to the size and weight of the darn things . Oh and I didn’t kill a deer with it yet , by choice . Id gladly go back to a compound , if I can one day draw one again , but I’m grateful for the two weeks ( so far ) of crossbow .
  5. I walk in , sit down shoot deer drag ‘em out . No food plots, hinge cuts, tree planting ,trail making , didn’t even have a camera up,this year . Seems like a lot of extra work .
  6. Today’s compounds don’t require much of a learning curve, I know many guys who right off the bat were shooting softball sized groups ,and took deer their first year . One guy at work won a 3D league the first year he joined . First half of the league he used a borrowed bow that he only shot that one night a week . That was the first time he shot a bow . He joined because a bunch of guys at work went ,so he tagged along one night ,then ended up buying a bow half way through .
  7. For a minute I thought they were filming me !
  8. Out with out oldest daughter , it’s her turn . I’m just a second set of eyes , and batting clean up .
  9. Wait ,what ? I wasn’t supposed to use my crossbow all of bow ?!
  10. Well , couldn’t get on a decent buck in bow or gun , took a doe the other day and that would have been fine if that ended my season . Last two sits zippo , today hopped in my only hang on , and in the open hardwoods . Difficult walk in land is flooded, can’t cross drainage ditch have to walk around extra 500 yards . So I’m on Stand maybe half an hour ,it’s 3:00 and I see doe running around , they come in close but keep looking back , I see more doe and a buck. the doe are all 20 -30 yards from me as I try to gauge the buck, he comes into 45 yards gives me a shot , straight down he goes. I put a second one in him as he tries to get back up . Climb down and as I fill out my tag the doe come back and stand 30 yards away .... 1 1/2 hour drag, guy hunting next woods over offers to come with ATV , but I was not about to ruin his hunt, so I ignored the text and stared dragging . Sorry only pic I took of deer , doe as I fill out tag .
  11. no one told the deer it was to warm.... He came in chasing 5 doe which are walking past me on the ground at 40 yards tight now !
  12. Can’t wait to get on stand today high 50s ! light weight clothes,a nice mild dry day, allowing me to sit longer and enjoy it . Snow should be mostly gone , hoping they leave corn and come browse in the woods for a change . This is gonna be great ! Sun just came out , going to,need sunglasses and a ball cap today .
  13. The recent Ny outdoor news had a anti xbow option piece ,that seemed more pro in parts .... Michigan , twice as many xbow lic than trad and compound ,and the harvest rate was almost the same xbow 44.6 %, trad and compound 42 % . kinda blows away all the arguments of xbows being such a superior weapon . Also interesting that 2xs as many choose the xbow , so the hunters have spoken in that State , they deserve to be heard there and else where . Hunting is a dieing sport , who, cares what anybody uses . when I started it was three guys to one doe permit ! Today I can get four , plus one bow doe tag and two more dmaps ! The hunter to,deer ratio today is out of control .

    Beer

Thread hi jack ! Gin is my go to hard liquor, Tanqueray, is my everyday ,but Hendricks, Aviation and a few others are in rotation. This is by far the best I’ve had . I’ve had a few Japanese whiskeys which are very very good so I tired this , blown away .
  15. So,I joined New York Crossbow Coalition , after I could no longer draw my compound , I volunteered at an event to help, them out . Signed up some members met many great guys and gals. We have the Governor, and I think the Senate, need the assembly, or perhaps vise versa ,can’t remeber . What struck me most was if every person who wanted full inclusion, would join, we’d have it next season . It’s a numbers game ,and as usual, hunters sit on the sidelines .
  16. Haven’t sat here in a year , tons of tracks and fresh dropping’s . Mostly 10 or 15 yard shots .
  17. Alright , the rain is holding off , I guess I’ll go sit in an unused stand this year, it’s also in the dry area of the thicket and wind is right .
  18. I believe that creates an easement by necessity .,through the private land . Which is easier said then done . Was hunting BLM land in Montana where the only access was down a private ranch road, the rancher didn’t quite agree, however my hunting partner lives in “The West “ and is an attorney, so the ranchers bluff was called . But we left just to avoid any further issues .
  19. Goosfier , farm is 3,000 I hunt about 90 of it now . After 30 years still tying to figure it out myself no lie My spot the 90 acres , about 50 are woods, overgrown fields and a thicket . The issue is it’s like an island surrounded by crops, little funnels or pinch points, they can step out into crops from anywhere, once they do they can move to another woods from there . I don’t hunt the neighboring farms that run the 3/4 and 1/2 mile to the N and S of me . Both those farms have standing corn now, making it hard as well . I have maybe 7 ladders that sometimes get moved ( already planning on moving 3 for next year ) and one LW hang on that I move . I sold all my other hang ons and climber . I also have two shooting shacks, one right now is on a trailer and on a neighboring guys land because it’s to wet to move where we want it on my spot . I haven’t used it yet this year, prefer to stay on my spot . 8H, no shortage of deer, I could kill deer at least 50% of sits in bow and gun has been good so far as well , I pass young bucks, and have a bit of trouble patterning the big ones . They stay in the thickest nastiest crap, and seldom move in the open woods . I count on the rut to get them when they make mistakes chasing after the does . One doe this year just to get some meat , passed a ton of young bucks, saw 4 shooters in bow no shots . The wife and I are fine with one, of course still trying for “ the big one .” Ive taken 1-4 every year there since ‘88 , my first year hunting it and my first year bow hunting and first bow kill . years past we drove every little woods and creek beds over a span of the 1 mile or so. No driving anymore and each hunter now has his own section of the farm , so I stay on my 90 or so . I should put a ladder or two on our land , it’s crops but some hedgerows .
  20. Own 116 don’t hunt it, all crops fields rent that out to farmer ( distant cousin). Their Farm is 3,000 acres , my spot there is about 90 , but crop fields run 3/4 of a mile to the south and 1/2 to the north .from it . Over the years I guess I’ve hunted a couple miles of it.
  21. I think his answer will be no, same as mine ever been to Webster ? I’m almost 60 been to LI once for a wedding . To us NYC /li area is in a remote part of the state , almost more a part of other states . I almost have to be reminded that an ocean touches NYS . I could ask everyone I know or run into for the next month and not find one that ever ocean fished in NYS . its nothing we do or think about others here doing , that’s all .
  22. . First on drive down see 4 running out of a field by my spot, stop watch them cross road, blow through a bean field cross next road . Sit 2:30 to 4:45 ish zero deer ,but lots of fresh tracks around. Walk out of woods, next to woods is about 100:yard wide hay field then standing corn, something is blowing at me from corn. Turn right walk a couple hundred yards come to another crop field ,3 more way off halling a$$ around end of standing corn . Typical for the time of year, they’re not tolerant of much and will run a mile crossing two, three roads , at the sight of a guy . Also about the only gun sit I recall that I didn’t see a deer on watch . Gotta get my daughter one Monday .....
