  1. Does anyone know where a person can buy Blackhorn 209 ? It seems to be sold out every where I look.
  2. Congratulations, he is an awesome goat. I know all of the emotions that you are experiencing right now. I think only a person that has gone through all of the physical and mental challenges can understand what you went through to take such an amazing animal. I believe a trophy goat that you just shot is the most challenging animal any hunter can hope for.
  3. No intention to steal this thread, but this does not only apply to snow machine permission. I used to have a few friends and their kids over for a man's weekend every year. One of the fathers would let his 3 sons borrow a quad and rip around my land like crazy outlaws. I asked him to calm his kids down and make sure they wear helmets. I was afraid of someone getting hurt and a law suit. Of course he never talked with his kids and one of them wrapped a friend's borrowed quad around a tree and totaled it. Thank God he did not get seriously hurt and he did not have a helmet on. My so-called friend told me that he would never sue me if his kid was injured, I tried telling him that not suing me was not his call, but his insurnce company, his son and his wife would have a voice regarding suing me for any accident on my property. He and his kids have not been invited back again for over 5 years now, he says that I'm the one that is wrong. So, its not just snowmobile clubs that can get you into trouble. An unresponsible friend can also
  4. I would think there is some kind of CO on the cabin. The electric company would not have installed a meter or energize the house without a final electrical inspection. Ask the town building department and helth department for all records on the cabin, this will save you many future headaches. You might want to talk with the town tax assessor too. See if the property is being taxed with a structure on it. The tax code will tell you if it is taxed as a seasonal cabin or a permanent residence or possibly taxed with no structure at all. I had to argue this with the assessor in my town. The cabin originaly had a septic but no well or electric. The assessor had the cabin taxed as a full time residence with all utilities. I made her change the classification to a seasonal cabin. This saved me much $ in the early days.
  5. Where are you buying? You are probably close to me
  6. Northeast Timber Services Rod Jones Walton, NY
  7. I have cam pics of tiny poults from a few days ago that must have been recently hatched.
  8. I've had my place next to Walton for over 40 years. Deer hunting in 4O is good but not great, it will take you a few PPs to receive an antlerless permit unless you are a landowner with at least 50 acres. Buck size has been increasing since NY started the 3 point rule. Grouse hunting is very good if you manage your property correctly for thick cover. Turkey hunting used to be awesome but the numbers have gone down over the years just like everywhere else. Although there is still pretty good hunting in areas. Bear Spring Mountain is a very large Wildlife Mngt. area where you can spend days walking around and never see the same place twice. Coyotes have made a huge increase in numbers if you like predator hunting. I would recommend the area as good for hunting and the fishing for trout in the blue ribbon rivers and reservoirs are hard to beat. You should seriously consider the land offer. If you don't mind letting us know around what area you are talking about without divulging the exact location. I can give you more information.
  9. I would strongly urge you to hire a certified forester. I have had my land in the NY State Forestry Program for many years now and had my land logged two years ago. I was very happy with the process and the end result. A certified forester will mark the trees that HE believes should be removed from your property. Trees that are 16" DBH or larger. This will allow your land not to be over harvested so smaller trees will be released. This will also let you have a timber harvest approximately every 15 years. He will also mark trees that are deformed and diseased to be removed for firewood and biomass. This is called "TSI" Timber Stand Improvement. If you allow a logger or mill forester to mark trees, he might only take the best of the best and leave the worst crooked trees behind. This is called High Grading. This would not let your forest recover for many generation. The forester will charge you a percentage of the harvest, but his services include advertising for sealed timber sale bids. He and you will go over the bids and decide which purchaser to choose. The increase profit by letting him handle the sale will more than cover his percentage fee. He will also supervise the work and require the logger to post a performance bond to make sure the land has been restored to your satisfaction. You can also add a condition that no logging will take place during the big game season like I did. DEC has a list of certified foresters on their web site. PM me if you would like to know who I use.
  10. I had a hen with a 5" beard in front of me last weekend. i have seen many of them over the years. I didn't know they are such an oddity. I just couldn't bring myself to shoot it considering the lower population in my area now.
  11. My other buddy called yesterday and said he was bailing on me because it was going to rain. Well, I've had my most memorable turkey hunts in the rain. Turkeys love feeding in green fields during a light rain. I was going to guide myself this morning. 8 3/4" beard, 1 1/8 spurs about 20 lbs
  12. I finally got my buddy to see the whole show last Sunday. Tom's were sounding off on roost. Seven hens flew down into the dekes. Hens feeding a couple of yards from us in the blind. Told him not to even blink an eye. Hens looking into the blind at us but my bud is a good listener. He never twitched a muscle. A 5" bearded hen is looking at him square into his eyes. A few minutes later he whispers to me that he can see a white head slowly making its way to us, the dekes and live hens that are all around us. Now the Tom is listening to soft purrs from my slate. The old long beard is getting closer. He slowly struts and saunters to the only jake deke and challenges him. This goes on for 10 minutes but feels like hours. I tell my pal to ever so slowly raise his Remington shotgun loaded with 3" copper plated 4 shot. Then I tell him to wait until I give the Tom a little cluck so he breaks out of his strut and raises his head. BANG! The big old Tom didn't even twitch a feather. I never saw a guy that excited after the shot before. What a great morning! 9" beard, 1 3/8 spurs & 25 lbs.
  13. When I was in Nebraska last year, there were large ranches covered up with those eye sores. When the sun went down, all you could see in the black night were long lines of reds lights destroying the night skies. The outfitter told me that there was a full time employee whos only job was to pick up dead birds and get rid of them before the do gooders or reporters found out about them. The locals hate those windmills, they are being forced upon them by the companies and ranch owners looking for the money. Unfortunately, the wind mill companies know to install them where the rural population is extremely low and the locals don't have enough of a voice to stop it. When driving back to camp, we looked up in the night sky to see a sting of 64 satellites passing over us in low earth orbit. My guide thought we were being invaded by aliens as he had never seen this before, lol. I told him that they must be part of Elon Musk's SpaceLink project. I never thought my Nebraska hunt was going to be part of a movie script from Back to the Future. I'm not a fan of what's in front of us if this is what we can expect. New Yorkers should take a close look at what's happening in the midwest before they let this go too far here. There is a reason why New Jersey is allowing them 15 miles off the coast, so only fishermen and freighters will see them.
  14. Here is a pile of sheds from the outfitter in Saskatchewan I hunted with a couple of years ago. He picks them up from the thousands of acres of grain fields when farming. They are big problems for him, they puncture high cost tractor tires. He was really pissed off at his dad the following year when I returned. A stranger had stopped by the farm when he was away in town. The guy offered his dad $200.00 for the whole pile and his dad sold them to him. He thought he was doing his son a favor by making room in the barn.
  15. I had used cameras up to a couple of years ago. I guess getting older is making me revert back to my older hunting ways. It's fun being surprised when a big buck that you have never seen before appears in front of you. My hunting buddies are not happy about this though, they were spoiled having me to do their pre-scouting for them. I will still use a camera or two on foot paths just to keep the trespassers under control.
  16. Looks like a sweet machine, Hope it works well for you. Keep us updated
  17. I bought my land 21 years ago when mineral rights were not even a discussion. So they conveyed to me upon purchase. The big natural gas craze started happening around 15 years ago and gas companies were leasing rights from landowners all over our area in Delaware County. I think it was Cuomo that banned all hydraulic fracturing and the gas prices tanked also. So gas companies did not renew leases. Last year I was in contract to purchase an adjoining parcel of land. The seller wanted to retain 50% of the mineral rights. My attorney advised me not to agree to this condition and would require me to sign a disclaimer from him stating that he advised me of all of the future downfalls if I proceeded with the purchase. The seller finally did agree to convey the mineral rights because the deal would have been dead if she refused. I would look for other properties if I were you. Lots of land out there. Just think about this, if you are asking these questions now, any potential future buyer of your land will have the same second thoughts that your are having. Not owning the mineral rights on your land will make it much harder to sell in the future.
  18. Four of us had a rifle elk / deer hunt planned in British Columbia for last September. The border closing required us postpone the hunt to this year. Hopefully Trudeau opens up the Canadian border before then. The outfitters up there are really hurting financially now. We had to find a western hunt to fill in the gap last year. We found a last minute Nebraska late muzzleloader hunt for December. Had a great time and we shot beautiful bucks. I have lots of opportunities with PPs in other states, but am trying to use them wisely for future trophy bucket list hunts. I.e. have 27 PPs in Colorado for elk, also doing another Colorado eastern plains mule deer hunt in 2022. I had to book that hunt 5 years in advance. It's too bad a guy needs to wait long years or a half of a life time to hunt a trophy area out west now.
  19. Funny, I gave Kurt a few porcuppines a few years ago. He asked for them to mount for a couple of guys that wnated them. I shoot around a dozen every year, munching on my cabin.
