  1. they are Mr Mellow of the animal world. I scooped up a little one outside of work that was chowing down on acorns, and brought him home to show my son. We back up to woods, so after a short visit I took him to the back yard where there were alot more oaks. he was happy to just explore the back yard for a day or so, and didnt worry about us at all.
  2. Holy crap....I don't think I have heard that since ... Think of all the great tunes that were NOT top 40 that have just faded into obscurity...
  3. I think it looks like a great rifle, and priced competitively to alot of the inline TCs, etc. out there. If I wasnt steering myself back to my old school Lyman Great Plains rifle, I would probably look into it.
  4. The thread is getting old, but I just noticed not many responses....Alot depends on what your rifle is made to shoot, to an extent. If it has a fast twist it is usually made for conical projectiles, which the power belt is one. A slow twist (usually found in more traditional hawkens or :"kentucky" style ml...one in 60/1 in 72 or such.. But generally as mentioned, the conicals give better performance, but of course it is all about placement, and I have killed a number of deer cleanly with round balls. Actually, this year I am going back to my traditional Lyman Great Plains rifle with a round ball simply because I shoot it more accurately than my in line, and....I like it!
  5. I have a number of friends who have gone to Ohio to hunt, actually even on paid leases. Each time they were very disappointed, even after trying different landownders..archery season. Always seemed to have conflicts with other parties, poor sightings, I would be more interested if anything, finding a leasing club in a good area right here.
  6. I have several caribou antler sheds I picked up moose hunting. they were a pretty gross mold/fungi green that wouldnt bleach out. I picked out a bone colored spray paint to give them a redo. They turned out great, and havent discolored after. I am pretty sure i primed them first.
  7. ahh, boat ramp adventures! I think we all could make videos of them, excepting of course our own mishaps.
  8. On the way home afterwork Tuesday, I decided to stop at the newly opened (s/p Corona) Gander just to be in a store for the first time in 3 months. They were bulk stacking ammo on tables. A casual look seemed to have most rounds in some sort of selection but none in .45 acp which was the only thing I would have taken. No big deal, I have a supply at home but have a Gander gift certificate to burn. I usually browse the used handguns, my only firearm interest in the store currently. They have a two day wait for appointments to look at guns...you can observe them from behind a ribbon, but to handle/ purchase, you need an appointment. Two guys inquired but they were declined and instructed how to sign up...no open appointments until Thursday. There were several clerks behind the counter milling around killing time. I overheard one clerk tell a customer, everyone with appointments was buying firearms. I would be fascinated to know the background of gun ownership for these peeps....first time panic buyers (scary), media promoted excuse to buy a new "toy" to keep up with the Joneses? myself, I actively and frequently shoot multiple rifle/pistols and shotguns s in different actions , calibers and gauges. If I am worried about my families safety, sure, I have a choice of what to grab, but honestly...any one of them from my .22 Marlin model 39 to a 100 year old 20 gauge coach gun, Winchester 94 to Ruger 270, I would feel very confident of being able to ensure my families safety, and never have I ever allowed myself not to have at least a box or two of sighted in ammo for each weapon.
  9. I am more likely to believe this was posted by "priveleged" individuals trying to fan the flames than the "under priveleged"".
  10. i have never seen where residential areas are a concern with riots such as is occuring. That said, dont do or have anything that is going to bring undue attention to you/ your home. Keep your car away from the road. If times were really....crazy, I would probably put plywood over our front windows. I have always kept a few sheets for severe weather fast repairs...windows, trees through roofs, etc. "That said, NY self defense law pretty clearly states that you are obligated to retreat if retreat is possible, except for inside your home. I forget the exact distance to be constituted a threat, but if I remember correctly is is 3 feet. I may be armed outside my home, but be prepared to retreat to my door...dont cross it. That said, if I have anything to worry about in my small town, its more likely due to a martian invasion., and other than being aware of current events, I have very low concern for the current social unrest developing past where it is.
  11. very unusual to find a bolt action that will have a ten round magazine, removable magazines are the small minority too. Pistol grip is fine. By far most hunting bolt actions will have a fixed four to five round magazine, but there are a few bolts with removable ....and totally legal mags. I am pretty sure Thompson Center was one. Exception.....22 rimfire you can have a large capacity mag for hunting, (Ruger 10/22 has a 10 round but is semi auto) and there are a slew of tube feed .22s that can hold 15 rounds and more, but they are not approprite or legal for anything but small game.
  12. Keep the scope you have, and put the money into ammo for the range. That is where most new hunters skimp. Various ranges in various lights, aim small to group small...from a rest until you are consistent. There is very seldom an opportunity in the field that DOESNT offer some sort of rest, if you practice from the bench, kneeling, sitting, even standing.
  13. It has been a number of years since I have actively hunted the area, but there is quite a bit of state land nearby. Just to the west near the south end of Skaneateles Lake is Great Bear Swamp. Further north east of Tully and Truxton is Morgan Hill State forest, which is quite large wooded hills. I have no doubt there is alot more land closer in, but Morgan and Great bear are probably only 20 to 30 minutes away.
  14. I think Bassetts are like most dogs..you get out of them what you put into them. They are so mellow it seems they are a bit...slow, but they are as teachable as any dog...that is the fault with alot of breeds, folks dont try to do anything with them.
  15. Alaska is on the list...not enough time OR Money ! We have been saving for three years for our next spring trip to South Africa for plains game and to do the game reserve thing, partially because my wife wants to go to. 10 days with a private outfitter/ guide with five species, 5500.oo (Kudu, Impala, Zebra, Black Wildebeest and Wart Hog!!. We finalize air travel in a couple months. Of course air fare and trophy shipping is separate. It will be at least several years after that before I would think of another go away hunt, and probably wont wander from the NE.
  16. Outstanding! I have long thought of a caribou hunt, preferably in Quebec. I have been twice to Newfoundland and each time we had quite a few caribou sightings, once wandering within about 20 yards of one who just let us wander by....she certainly didn't know what we were. I understand NF still does have a very limited hunt, but generally all of the eastern herds have taken dramatic falls in population. From what I understand, the field biologists really aren't too worried, as they have a long history of similar population rises and sudden falls and are anticipated to recover. The terrain itself is so beautiful it makes it worthwhile.
  17. Yep, nothing I am interested in anyway. I have always wanted a .22 in PPK (not offered) , but other than the gesture from the co. nothing to entice me.
  18. Saturday we will be fishing the north end of Cayuga Lake, just off Cayuga! They should go right overhead at 2:22.
  19. I was pleased that my wife watched the episode with me...I just said this says better than anything what hunting is all about.
  20. There were a couple episodes based in Alaska, hunting caribou. The host was with a son and father team. At one point on a beautiful day they had a great bull caribou wander above them, and the father(who was with the host) didnt even reach for his rifle, He said to the effect, "my hunt is complete. It just cant get any better than this", as the bull wandered away. that is what it is about. Later in the episode, the father does shoot a big bull, and it was fine to see the gentleman truly get overwhelmed and pay his respects to his game after his success, as opposed to idiots high fiving and hooting it up. Even my wife enjoys watching the show, who could care otherwise.
  21. one of my favorite shows. He shows great ethics and love of the outdoors, as well as sharing it with others. Great variety. I dont binge, so I am out. Lucky if I watch an hour of tv a week.
  22. I had a beard for a number of years on and off. Since I have been working in health care (RN), beards are kind of gross, when you think of what can ...and does, get splashed on you. Much easier to wash your face when in doubt then a beard.
  23. Yep. Certainly looks it. FN was taken over by the German occupation while they were there, but they also re-proof marked a lot of the captured arms. My 1922 was manufactured in the early thirties but carries a Nazi stamp. JJB, is your pictured handgun yours, something your are looking into? I do not know much about the collecting value, but as a shooter, I wouldn't think it would be very desireable….if it is war time manufacture. Even though the HIgh Power is a great handgun, quality of manufacture would be in question and it probably would have more worth as a collectable. Actual dollar value I am clueless. Try to find a Browning, FN or similar web site where they have a more specialized interest.
