  1. seems like if he rear ended someone, the boat would be on the bumpee...
  2. For the life of me I don't understand why anyone would want to own/ display anything that they didn't shoot themselves, though I understand the testosterone deprived executive types frequently are in the market for such to display in their offices, etc. to prove their worth...similar to bagged hunt sort of mindset.
  3. Hoy! guess its a good reason to be sure to tie down the back end!
  4. a number of years ago I was looking into getting dry ice for some sort of project, and just googled dry ice distributors in my area....(Syracuse), no problem finding a source. I would just do the same. Keep in mind that you will want to be planning on doing your project promptly after obtaining it. When we were younger and goofier, we had some stuff delivered to our store in the mall packed with dry ice. We tossed it into the fountain in front of the store, producing an awesome fog bank. We were darn glad no one saw us do it... created quite a stir!
  5. I am thinking Santa's summer heard.
  6. Yes, to all you ask, NYS response has been well documented and written about to those who look for the information, several times in national publications which you are free to look up if you so desire. And personally I know two individuals who lost a great deal in investment when they had their herds destroyed after they couldn't document all the animals origins. You will not get any further response from me on this subject. Your business interests horribly cloud your own perceptions. I Hope you are able to settle out your anger issues.
  7. Statistics are numbers, and unfortunately unlike in math class, numbers do not always add up. It has been repeatedly stated/ suggested in this topic that CWD isn't a threat, because the states where it has been found that have it have growing/ high deer populations. A more accurate and logical correlation /statement is that CWD is transmitted/found in high population areas. Back to the original subject at the start, when it was first found, NY took very quick action: isolating the area of origin, deer inspection for quite a large area, limited the potential for transmission with the transport of animal parts into and out of the state, and destroyed (putting out of business) a fair number of commercial businesses involved in deer raising) that couldn't produce the required proof of origin for the herds deer. NY took very drastic action early on because there wasn't a lot known. We haven't had any further outbreaks, while outbreaks continue else where. New York also has a relatively stable deer heard, with no wild animal feeding/ congregation. In theory. I am content to err in favor of the direction that NY took.
  8. Favorite ...can vary a bit, but over time my favorite guns I use are: My 8mm Oberndorf Mauser model 98 in 8mm Mauser (8x57). It was dads only hunting rifle, he did a typical sporterization on it in the fifties. Over a series of years I updated it with a scope, side swing safety, Timney trigger and dump magazine trigger housing. My perfect all game rifle, it shot my first buck and moose, with a lot of critters in between. 45-70 Browning falling block with a 1.5x5 Leupold. I got it from my father in law, probably my prettiest gun. I have used it on all my bear hunts, and am taking it out to the range actually, this am. Marlin 39 .22. This was dads too. It shoots wonderful, is beautiful (though well worn), and is my most fun rifle. Runner up: Winchester 94, mfg. 1961. I found it about 20 years ago, well used but solid shape, with a Lyman aperture site on it. I refinished it (blue and wood with oil stain). I never feel more like I am really hunting than when I carry it. Shoots great, and best of all...it was built the same year I was!
  9. I allways figured there was a market for all the banned toys from the good ol days.... Jarts, Red Rider BB guns, those great pressurized water rockets, Estes rockets, chemistry sets, what else is missing to round out childhood?
  10. very tough to say without a better view of the head, early in the year so not as big bellied as they would be in October/ November, just like with fawns, the longer the legs look, the younger....it looks like the pic cuts off the lower part of the legs. no weight guess, but I am thinking it is a mature bear, and in the fall probably a nice one. almost any NY bear other than a cub is a trophy!
  11. Follow the east / west ridges, swamp borders and bottle necks, drive the area and look for neighboring open fields/ agriculture. Even if you find some corn/ etc. a mile or so away, it will affect you. There is no substitute for woods cruising: look for beech, black cherry, and lordy lordy, and oaks (rare up there probably). Wild apple trees can be a big draw: I prune and semi maintain a slew of them near me.
  12. Anything behind a fence or bread for genetics. Anything that I couldn't legally bring home including polar bear, lion. Giraffe, Hippo, rhino, probably absolute last on the list would be a cull tuskless elephant. Otherwise, although I don't have the means, I would at least have interest in a fair chase hunt for most big game.
  13. I have never hunted that specific area, but you will do well to get the topomaps for the area and learn the major topography, and never go into the woods without a compass and the knowledge to get yourself back to your road. Lotsa big woods up there.
  14. more abandoned cars than I can recall.....one sedan from the twenties, which the body and frame looked darn solid on...probably a collector would have loved it. Thirty years after, and a former farm field / road is a forest.
  15. Remember how much we used to enjoy watching music videos/ mtv when it was new? I have to admit I am a closet ABBA fan...but I cant listen to their music, because all of it is so damgamit catchy, it earworms me for a month after!
  16. I have lived near and worked in and around Syracuse most of my life. I have zero concerns for the violence you hear reported. It is almost all encapsulated in the same crowd. Don't go where you don't have business. Generally speaking, there isn't any place in the city I wont go if I have a need to. Just be aware of your surroundings. A friend of mine was a long time reporter with the crime beat with the Post Standard, and followed these things very closely, and the neighborhoods haven't changed much. The Post has almost no real active reporters anymore: they and the news channels depend heavily on the police reports for easy access news stories, which gives a distorted picture.
  17. I know nothing of his evils, but a person who is chronically depressed is in the depths of hell when they drop into the depths of it. All they can focus on is the escaping of the pain. Illicit drug use/alcohol messes with any medically prescribed pharmaceutical regimen that may help with it, and certainly the pressures of his occupation and lifestyle affect it. I hope he ate sushi that day. I always enjoyed his shows, but I don't think I would have enjoyed his company too much.
  18. I don't think I would shoot it just because it was piebald. If it was a shootable buck or decent sized doe for the freezer I would probably treat it as any other.
  19. Hopefully you guys will go back. You will find thermocells work fantastic, either in a tree or a ground blind. The more comfortable you can sit, the more still you are. Most stand sites have been in use for years, and the bears know where the stands are. I have watched bears watch the area for hours before coming in. There is no such thing as being too still. At least in the spring, I have found the bears all taste fine, at least up to 275 (three I have shot were 225-275).
  20. Every year for the past three years I have had an absolutely bodacious buck stop in for a few pics about every 3-4 nights. A friend owns land about six miles away, and has pictures of the same buck. Outside of owning massive amounts of land and living in themiddle of it, or high fencing, it is difficult. at the same time, having a property with proper bedding/ food areas can go a long way in your favor, as does having a gentlemans agreement with neighbors about shooting restrictions.
  21. it aint a bachelor party if women are involved in any way! 1) pick a different day where no curfew is needed, jus because.. 2) Fishing charter is a great idea! 3) Watch Tom Hanks "Bachelor Party" for an instruction manual!
  22. The problem with "crotch rockets"s, is that for relatively little money inexperienced kids can buy a machine with incredible acceleration and speed without the maturity to control it. Even worse, the owners so often have the poor judgement to take their girlfriends out on them with zero riding protection, the cheapest possible helmets, without any experience or instruction riding two up. Most of the CR club don't stick with bikes. They have too close a call and take up a new hobbie.
  23. most of us don't have a chance to see the circumstances thrown to a lot of folks. Certainly there are the professional panhandlers. I have met and cared for many homeless who simply choose a different way of life, at great sacrifice (one gentleman....and he was a gentleman...lived between several highways, hidden away by the brush until some punks set fire to the brush and incinerated his home...and him, one night). Then again, there are simply the crooks simply trying to separate you from your money. One woman in our area last summer would scam folks at gas station into "buying her gas so she could get home". She hit me up several times, even after the first time when I asked her where she lived, so could buy enough gas to get home. When she replied an area only a few miles away I started to give her a dollar so she would by enough gas for the distance, and she stormed off in a fury.
  24. Holy cow poop...that Griffin looks like a rocket ship compared to my old Thompson, which was state of the art at the time!
