  1. wouldn't chance it. was the freezer bad? Not a big fan of chest freezers. Got a good deal on a kenmore a few years ago that's upright, but even better has a temp and door alarm. i believe those last 2 things are invaluable.
  2. Good story. I'm intrigued by your story. It's Almost as if you didn't enjoy the experience? But I believe that's just how you wrote the story. Also curious about your comment where you didn't like shooting the gun. Sounds like you have some great land, that is indeed a mounter and I'd never advise any hunter to pass any deer like you did with the doe. Not a lot of hunters have great success with calling either... Wondering if you're correlating it incorrectly. Hope you continue to hunt. Don't be surprised by your sons reaction. Children "learn" those fears through adults expressing their views. Teaching children while young is an absolute must
  3. You couldn't make it all the way without a copy and paste quote though could you? Let alone one from a circus performer.
  4. Come on. Stop with the copy and paste quotes and the bitching about what wont work and give me some solutions.
  5. ok, now we're getting somewhere. What needs to change that you're ok with? Because philo said nothing. But can we not agree that fearing you might be the next victim at work, movies, school or mall is not an option either?
  6. it wasn't meant to be an insult. Just a simple statement that there's no amount of typing or time spent that will ever allow you and I to see eye to eye. As a gun owning conservative, I'm actually on the side of you and the other 2 musketeers, I just think you hurt your cause by taking everything to an extreme.
  7. lol. chances are your 4th generation meth cooking neighbor is just as hell bent on destruction. But he's a white christian so that makes it ok? enviro-nazis? good lord you're now the 3rd musketeer with vjp and papist. God forbid a bunch of hunters and outdoorsman wish to help reduce pollution and protect the planet right? God forbid gun owners wouldn't want to help save their freedoms by introducing common sense legislation right? If you haven't noticed, you live in a state where a lot of your freedoms are already vanishing. So should you really keep doing what you're doing by just putting up a wall and pushing back ON EVERYTHING?
  8. if my rifle is sited in at 100 yards, it will adjust my scope based on my rifle and load to shoot out to 300+. should I not take that 300 yard shot knowing I can easily hit that pie plate, because i've never actually taken it?
  9. I'm not disagreeing with what you said, however I'll ask a little more clearly. What level of risk are you willing to accept from foreign or home grown terrorists just so you don't have to fill out some paperwork?
  10. What about my leupold CDS custom made for my gun and bullet?
  11. I have a rifle box and scope box to "open". but will be put to use before santa comes down the chimney.
  12. what have you been reading? NYS wants to decrease doe. That hunter did exactly what that part wanted. I shot 2 doe out of 3 in a group on opening day. One was 80 lb. and delicious. shooting small non-breeder doe is one of the best things you can do on private land. Shooting breeder doe and letting small bucks walk is one of the best things you can do on overpopulated land.
  13. i did forget the water bottle i bring. i've thought about purifying tabs to be honest as well but with a climber that pack and all the other crap is getting pretty heavy.
  14. spend more money on your glass than on your gun and you'll be a happy man for many years. there's a $100 manufacturers rebate on Leupold vx-3's till the end of year.
  15. sure is harder to spray and pray with a bolt action 30-06 vs the semi 12 gauges a lot of us toted.
  16. most rifles (not speaking of mz) are capable at 300+. Not many 300 yard ranges out there. You wouldn't take that shot if you were sited in at 100?
  17. I found my smokepole, while on the cheaper end of muzleloaders available to be the most finicky gun I've ever tried to site in. Not simply because of the powder and style of how it works but also due to the requirement for cleaning. Many guys cannot get easy access to a 100 yard range and do just fine siting in an inch high at 50 and you will probably be just fine. Sometimes we talk about rifles, scopes and loads like that 1/4 moa at 300 yards is absolutely critical to hit the pie plate of a deer. I do believe in being as accurate as possible and t hat said, these kinds of posts make me nervous as we owe it to our sport to be the most prepared and proficient as possible as to minimize wounding. I really hope you just acquired the gun and aren't just procrastinating.
  18. as an NRA member, gun owning, pro-gun citizen the downright refusal to listen to any sort of legislation at all has me embarrassed. I understand most of this comes from the "if you give an inch" mindset and I understand that. But it seems many of you would rather ban an entire religion than god forbid have a simple background check, fingerprints or stricter measures. Will this stop terrorist? not entirely. Will it catch a few unlucky people in it's net? probably. But will it help? I think so.
  19. think about what you might do to get a piece of ass? Traveling a few miles is nothing for a deer. I think a lot of us would do it ourselves when we were teens.
  20. I'd like to add as well that in my field we over emphasize that we all need to learn from our or others unfortunate events or mistakes. I just realized I do not have a smoke detector in my garage and your story has reminded me to put one in.
  21. very sorry man. My garage and gear is less about the dollar value and more about a collection of stuff over my 32 years that i've acquired to make my life easier in the woods and while working on motors and the yard. I also keep my antlers minus the mounts in the garage. Those aren't replaceable and either is the sentimental value of a lot of tools from my late grandfather. glad you and your family are ok. Let us know what caused it so we can all learn.
  22. have said it so many times that I'm sick of saying it. The public areas and farms that allow hunters continue to shrink and hunters are getting smarter. Less pumpkins wandering around bumping deer. The deer are overhunted in these areas and they continue to bloom in parks and burbs. So I believe it's absolutely true that hunters are seeing less deer, not just big bucks but less deer. And I believe it true that the DEC is getting pressure about the deer eating shrubs and being hit by cars in Pitsford.
  23. yeah i'm not debating it, just wondering the science behind it. Maybe i'm not cooking mine long enough.
