  1. I bought a new, last years model Parker Wildfire kit for $294 last spring from Gandermtn. There are plenty of bows in the lower price range, and they shot the same as the Mattews. Just don't tell a Matthews fan club member that.haha My wildfire as a 7 3/4 inch brace height and weighs 3.75 pounds..I like it.
  2. We used to do alot of rabbit hunting and I firmly beleive that this practice helps when attempting to shoot running deer. Open sights are a must for me aswell.
  3. Each chapter is different, ours is going to use a horse training arena (for lack of a better word) in the coming months and then go back out side come March and then test in May. You will need to join the National Orginization first which is where the training DVD and book comes from, just look on their web site and you will find all the info you need to join. Once you get that done, look up the local chapter, they may have a web site? I'll check on that too. You will need to join the local chapter too, and you will need the National number they give you to sign up. Typically the local chapter charges a fee per training, ours is $10 and this goes towards land use fee and equipment. There will also be a charge per bird used in training, fairly cheap for Chuckars and a little more for Pheasants and ducks. I like chuckars because they are cheap and hold well in cover and flush good. Gus is my first bird dog and coming into this I knew zero about training a dog so joining was a great way for me to gain knowledge and also have access to guys who have done it all before. I am no where near done training him but he has made great strides and I have learned alot along the way. Good luck! Here is their web site.. http://www.flnavhda.com/
  4. Was it near a road perhaps? I'm sure who ever shot it lost their head like so many do, if a deer doesn't fall over dead many cannot find it. Fataly shot deer do not have magic powers to survive massive trama and blood loss contrary to popular beleif. They will die in a short amount of time no matter what. I keep reading on here that guys have had deer run hundreds of yards on a double lung or heart shot, to them I say BS! Now if you push a liver or gut hit deer they can and will go very very far from where you jumped them. Maybe some of us need to learn how to track wounded game instead of starring at the rack and dreaming about the mount all day long. Mistakes happen but in this case who ever shot this buck was clearly incompetent when it came to dead deer recovery. shesh, reading that pissed me off! Thanks Culver!
  5. I don't know that area of the state to well, but have you looked on the DEC web site to see where they have released them at all? Also there is a State run Co-op near Ithaca that might be worth checking out. If all else fails there is allways a preserve to try, there is a fair priced one in Rome NY. Are you a member of Navhda? Its a good way to train in the off season through the summer months. I know there is a chaper in the Finger lakes region. I have a 8 month old GWP, we don't have many Phesants here, just grouse and they are a pain to try and train a dog on. Or should I say they are a pain for me to hit.
  6. I usually like to hunt with some one else too, but there are allways times when I go alone. I went out alone Sunday morning for Grouse with my dog and had a great time. To bad you live in WNY cause I would be happy to go small game hunting with you. I am already making plans to go Sunday morning and then the week after that a couple of more times too and hopefully I can get my pup on some birds.
  7. I may be wrong but I think Doc was refering to the reclaimed dirt from splashing or minor spills. Just guessing.
  8. Typically the longer grunts are tending grunts, or as you say chasing doe's. But tending would be when he had one picked out and he was making sure it stayed where he wanted it, kinda like herding cattle. I have noticed that the shorter grunts are usually signs of a more aggressive buck, which could have been the case with your situation. He could have been issueing a challenge to your grunting witht he shorter ones. My dad found where two bucks were fighting in the snow over the weekend and could still smell the bucks buck never did see them, so they were clearly active and aggressive, like your buck. And they do indeed have a wide range of vocalizations. Consider your self lucky to have witnessed it.
  9. Jersey is a good place for it. Good question Doc, where does all of this stuff go, I think the liquid stuff goes to a water treatment plant.
  10. Exactaly, or if, god forbid, something bad were to happen you would know where the person was. Ok well when you buy them get an extra one or two for me would you, I promise the check is in the mail. I could justify buying it but for some reason I think my dad would turn his off, or figure out a way to ignore my calls for help dragging one out. That is a neat product to say the least.
  11. wow Culver is that price for just one?? Kidding aside, I was looking at those types too. Our one spot is big woods and one could easily disappear there with out a trace, and with my dad not getting any younger I have to think of that constantly. He still goes pretty good for a out of shape 64 year old hunter, I bet he can still put some young pups to shame hiking.
  12. haha, Eddie you don't know how close I came to punting it down the mountain last weekend. For now my 2 year old has it as a toy, she says "I talkin to people", who, has yet to be determined. I have no clue what model they are, they were @$60 when I bought them and they are yellow. The one works great, the other not at all. It just buzzes and blinks at me.
  13. What do you guys use, we have Motorolla something's and I have one that doesn't work at all. Any one have any luck with other brands and do any of you know a fix for units that are broken?
  14. Alright admit it, the 13 year old did the shooting for you didn't he...lol The drought is over for you, congrats.
  15. haha..that would have been a sight for him I bet! We keep track of our deer weights but really by next year it will just be a deer no matter the size.
  16. I am more looking forward to next summers vacation's we are starting to plan, after the summer then I can start to think about deer again. We are heading to Acadia for a week of camping and I am excited!
  17. There is meat loss no matter what you do, lossing the ribs and a shoulder is no biggie to me. It comes with the territory so to speak. And not to bust your balls but most button bucks do not exceed 75 pounds, congrats by the way!
  18. I found my self wishing the season was longer this year, but like others I have bird hunting to move on to. I went out yesterday (NZ) with my dog and had a blast, never saw a bird but had fun. I am thinking about ice fishing this year, I haven't been in years and I have a taste for fried Perch.
  19. Well my dad's rule is, if a critter gets into his garden its in trouble, it looks like those deer are eating shrubs and stuff. I call that a garden and I say those deer are in trouble! So what if his rule is for woodchucks and what not, it could still apply to deer. lol. I had a doe and two fawns in my yard most of last fall and winter and they got so brave that were literally touching the house when they were feeding on the shrubs out front. Damn Deer!
  20. Why isn't there a gun barrell pressed up against the screen? lol
  21. I think they should extend the ml season all the way to Jan. 1st. The rest of the season is fine the way it is, as previously stated shortening the season will not stop the 80-85% of deer from being killed the first few days. This seems like another issue that isn't an issue as I highly doubt the DEC will make a move to loose money and make more hunters mad.
  22. I was looking at the weather for there it has lows in the single digits and highs in the 20's forecasted, thats not too terrible for there. Say hello to the Reigndeer, they have a bunch of them there. Honk the horn when you drive past exit 16 on the north way thats where I live, Well not really but you get the idea..lol
  23. WNY you are violating the rules of the ABC and will receive a sumons (sp?) in the mail. If you don't know, ABC stands for Anit-Bub-Club and is a direct off shoot of the CIA. Agents may be at your door step by night fall.
  24. They have a camp site there and we stayed there in July, it was down in the high 20's. So it will be cold as heck for you, its not far from Saranac lake which is one of the coldest spots in NY. I wouldn't call it city but there are stores and things in the area, I guess it depends on where you are from. Santa's workshop is on one of the roads up Whiteface Mountain which is where the held the Olympics in the 80's. The area is absolutely beautiful and I am sure you will enjoy it. We plan on returning for more camping, hiking, and fishing this summer.
  25. So if you are a bad guy, wouldn't not wearing a back tag tip some one off that you are said bad guy? Sometimes its better to hide in plain sight, if I were to set out to do something bad I would do my best to blend in ie.. wear a back tag, and hope that no one could get my number as Im sure it would be hard to spot at a distance in the brush. So my thinking is that backtags are not an evil exstension of the Government and I will continue to wear mine in both the NZ and SZ with out fear of the CIA knocking on my door. :
