Though I agree with the he above I think it is key you should set it up as far in advance as possible and brush up the outline of it. Put it somewhere where you can access it smart not leading deer to it with your scent or them crossing your path during/post hunt. Where black not camo inside- face paint helps too. Snow will collapse and ruin them. Stake the chit out of it- even screw in dog anchors as the wind will happily remove or relocate it for you. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

So I wonder how that 2 week kill only doe is working out
gjs4 replied to swank68's topic in General Hunting
I hunt just west of DL state park. Heard 11 shots last night. If you're not out pressuring the deer someone is. That park is a joke and more of a suicide mission than hunting location... Pounded by pheasant "hunters" chasing the truck, horse people who feel they own it and pumpkins for the big gun holidays. I can think of at least 3 hauled out of there on gurneys - two toe tagged - and I am surely forgetting a bunch. Just because they're not in the lots for you to see doesn't mean they're it there. And just a refresher- 1 million does killed or none; the dec just wants to cram a sept ml season down our throats. But don't worry... No one will poach and the herd won't be pressured. With one of the highest dmp allocations out there we must have does everywhere anyway -
Coyotes will check spots for free meals- why would you gut where you hunt?
-
They are clueless on what lives where. There's something they love about ml tag sales and that's why they linked in xbows. Then again we call young bucks antler less so who knows? They don't know the herd, they don't care about it and all of this will be visible soon when we have nothing left to hunt. Intensely managed ground in 8g w ag, food plots and low pressure (and acreage) since 1999- worst observations (numbers and buck age) to date. However we are the highest for dmps issued ..... Go figure. One could bring in the ever flourishing coyotes but the 98" of snow in three days lasting a week had far more to do with it. Then again- mr.h flies the flag of a deer plan designed in 09 for needed actions 6 and 7 yrs later w no regard for weather imposed mortality or crop cycles. Bad times ahead

Helping my fm silly and friends understand hunting is far more helpful than someone else's. I pay my dues, and have for a number of years. You guys don't have to like my take, I am not bashing them- just expressing I feel like they do nothing for deer with regard to the politics/dec aspects of hunting. I belong to a bunch of other groups- they can claim wetlands saved, habitat improvement, etc ..... I laugh looking at the responses here- most are balled up and defensive against my opinion but are too dumb to know I reach out to the dec and at one point was starting a Qdma division here before some personal matters stifled that. Typical old huntingNY- if you don't agree with us, we will wagon train around you and fling arrows until you quit. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Hey bud. Actually it's fundraisers...not for profits need profits- but my point with regard to the origination was just feeling like they were one of the few to save us from Jeremy's mad dash of deer eradication without census that we are watching unfold

I am a member. Just stating my opinion. I don't think they've represented out like minded group enough to Albany or the DEC. Youth days and dinners raise dollars- not awareness. Again- they keep getting my $30 so why worry? Try to learn more and jump to conclusions less

Replace "deer" in Qdm with "trees and view it as a forest. If you just cut the biggest trees your woods would turn to crap in no time. Lots of work goes into managing a wood lot, invasive species, scrap trees, seasonal hinderences, pests, etc. make sense in that analogy? the Qdma is just another group making from money from members IMO- but they have a nice magazine. Qdm is just their jacket colors Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

In general- bow hunters are more prepared than gun hunters by the simple nature of the distance thy must have their query within. Many gun hunters are slobs- taking bore sighted guns to the woods, never practicing, etc. I really don't give a crap about anyone telling me they know facts better than I do. Not here to fly the flag of my ego- I am here to offer an opinion whether it's loved or not. You can challenge me to anything you want. I am better than you with any gun or bow discipline and your typing challenges can be saved for some kid scared of you at the bike rack. The cute little fraternity of hny can be a joke- as that of hunting in Ny- both with the frequency of "more than often". It seems you rather have corroboration of a like minded beer sharing buddy than step your game up. My turn- Your opinion sucks as much as your marksmanship then and you're trying to compensate for with chest poking challenges to a guy you know nothing about. If you don't like my opinion- make yours better through facts and move on to someone who cares to value your drivel.
-
God forbid someone's opinion differs from the boys of HNY forums. I'll raise your bow hunters commentary with all the slob gun hunters that drive deer during gun season- let me guess ; they're practiced, well seasoned and proficient in making running shots, right? Just because my opinion was presented doesn't mean I side with a group of hunters. The vast majority of "hunters" in this state are lazy and not well versed with their abilities in any regard or with any implement. In my opinion- a hunter has responsibility to be as accurate as possible. That's rarely the case. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Absolutely- it makes the best hunters out there. After all most everyone on this forum is in a league far above legendary near those of Arrow Gance and Tooshbaggery Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Not brainwashed- ethical. If your gun shoots a 3-5" off a rest at a hundred yards your likely to shoot a 9-15" mess wo a rest and elevated blood pressure. Not fair to the animal. Just cause you put a hole in something living doesn't mean you earned it or did the experience justice. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

I've sprayed disced, mowed and swore at both.... How'd you win the war?
-
Quality in scopes, rings and bases cannot be overlooked. People by cheap for some reason thinking they're saving money. 1" or less group at 100 from rest is about the norm and 2" is about all I think would be allowable for hunting... Not to mention an ethical hunter wouldn't shoot a gun far the than they've practiced (to proficiency) with..... I'd find a longer range- go 50-100 and then some
-
The guys who kill the biggest bucks w skill (not lucky Joe or a guy who has built his ground for such purpose) hunt one specific animal.... Plan b only occurs when plan a is completed in success or failure

Why don't you ask how many days of the year you scout or work on whitetail related projects... Think all of the pros would be demoted a few notches fast Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

Another interesting fact- the numbers are made up Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
-
How many does live in the regions where the antler less changes have been made and how many need to be killed for the population to be reduced "enough"? I can't help but want to scream at these posts for their Kool Aid drinking nature. If you guys truly think the state has a clue on what's there, what needs to go (for any reason beyond limiting thruway collisions or some foresters wet dream of young trees not being browsed) you will surely not be dumb enough to post about how chitty the hunting is here in 3 years after the bullets and winters knock the numbers low enough most sits don't yield a sighting. Figure out how many deer are where you hunt rather than how it affects your buck hunting ... And figure out how to age bucks before complaining about buck tags, herd health or anything of the sort Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

If you know where does are hunt down wind of them first and third weeks of November. Where fawns are - Hunt down wind the first week of December.
-
How do you know every deer was using it? How do You know you didn't bugger it up or tip them off. Your comment on having to call and use scents tells me you need corroboration for your tactics not help in learning how to hunt the right way. Not to be rude but if you are determined to proceed as such I am out...
-
As stated in the other thread- try to figure out what the buck is making the rubs for and use that to take the next step. I would not hunt them. Scrapes are best to hunt during mid October and mid November. Best thing you can do is stay out of the woods and set up an observation stand to watch the deer without them knowing. Learn them that way. If you use cams be selective when you go near them and take every bit of info from them - pair it with the day's weather and conditions and log everything. Hunt one buck not areas and you'll be far ahead on 90% of New Yorks whitetail pursuers Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
