  1. a rain day is the ideal time to move a stand this close to season and late in the year
  2. If youre asking the question youre hoping for something better....you wont have as much opportunity for better if you shoot him If you need "groceries" work more; shop more. Always interesting to see how guys with big buck avatars are advocates of being a trigger slut...therein lies the problem
  3. Amen! I feel the DEC is the same way- they want license sales and do not want to manage deer leaving it up to the hunters so they do not need to rub anyones fur the wrong way. I am all about mature deer but the number of saved buck fawns by having 3pts on one side wont make this Iowa. Everyone wants this or that but the line is way shorter when someone purposes more gun season regs....that walk is too bothersome
  4. What does your scouting tell you? when is the moon overhead or underfoot? Where are your hunting spots along the animals travel circuit? Can you enter and exit that spot? Very few situations warrant an October morning sit without tons of homework unless you like to see less deer in the woods with each venture out
  5. What does your scouting tell you? when is the moon overhead or underfoot? Where are your hunting spots along the animals travel circuit? Can you enter and exit that spot? 6. Ethical kills have to be the highest priority on arrow release- not an option- a lack of practice is laziness; no excuses. Hunting without ample training/practice is slobbish behavior. Not saying you have to be a tourney pro and things dont go wrong but you have to proficient And NY hunters are lazier than most...no specific folks were singled out and i too am associated with the same state these jack wagons wound and miss in
  7. Have spent a good number of years training and hunting over bird dogs.... Here is the fact; The more birds your dog sees the better it will be. Basic obedience what you need to have down. Some dogs have better abilities than others- keep your bias out of it
  8. Thats cheap....you can sow them and theyll prolly grow but a frost will nuke them
  9. I have an m100 i use with the newer ratchet strap attach (or my LWs) w LW sticks- simply the best and fastest IMO. I use screw ins on a few crooked trunk sets but primarily leave my Mill. brackets on (trees trimmed out) with those sportsmansguide or Dicks ladder sections as I feel theyre much safer
  10. inventory then make that determination also factor i if your killing those form your property or transients
  11. as sad as this is....go to any big sporting goods store the day before gun season opens....my buddy used to work at DIcks and he said they would extend their hours, sell countless bore sighting/new sight/combo guns to pros of the woods. NY hunters suck....we have one of the laziest fraternities out there....ton of cheats too....not sure where heritage and interest left obligation and practice behind. Proof perfect of how things would go if crossbow was legalized for everyone
  12. Glad to see so many deer managers on here and would love to hear more about managing herds for small parcels in a state with no quality management ....please enlighten Messed up his juvenile rack.... does select whom they breed with....odds are some genius will shoot him with the philosophy of making a "better" deer so save your tag unless this is what you aspire to harvest. You want bigger deer? Dont shoot little ones or think youll get them by culling any buck in NY.
  13. Do you plan on being that close to bedding you can catch a buck as he beds? October mornings without significant scouting and "patterning" is only good for tipping every deer off it is intrusion time......
  14. I was good beer fiend and then got whacked with the gluten intolerance curse around 30...7 years later i home brew again and will be making a GF stout any day now. Just playing the hand i was dealt Old favs-Sierra Nevada Bigfoot, any Unibroue belgian, Molson Stock Ale, the occasional EKU 23 or Arrogant Bastard Ale, loved Guinness and Murphys Double Chocolate Stouts, Franzikaner (sp), Dunkel......okay....most beers made... some of the locals are duds imo just priding themselves off being near the wine trail...Being stuck gluten free stinks but will say the only giant miss is Guinness- nothing else like it
  15. scouting will kill them all season long- and its the only thing that will with consistency if lures worked everyone into killing would use them
  16. I pay a lot- have dirt roads on three sides of block, have no road frontage.....but i have a wife who WAS a teacher in the local school....our school is ranked low; then again that is on standardized tests another state entity....but most the teachers here are antiquated and duds (as I know them personally)....there are a good number of teachers over 80k for a 160day work year and have your tax payers guarantee their retirement (403b)...bummer huh? My wife teaches at a private school- a prestigious one for the area- 16k a kid per yr...and she makes just over twice that tuition. Then again there are prison guards, WWTP, municipal, government and townie "workers" that retire with pensions in the range of 60-80k after 20-25 yrs. I am so not a lib, and totally back unions but this state is riddled with corruption from the top and through each tier...just one level promising the next too much for their efforts....and we the taxpayers pick up the bill. Whats the cure? Not sure yet- but burn out is happening....your kid may lose sports or music but the superintendent makes 200k a year.... This state and this country which was founded on hard work is fueled by people who take all they can for giving as little as necessary to do that
  17. Less cams-more glassing.Cams and checking them pressure deer Right now is horn porn inventory time- hard horned in two weeks matters way more. Harvest pics matter the most. When you see where theyre moving the last week of sept- come in midday the first similar wind at the start of October and a spot that wouldve killed them ....hunt mobile; permanent stands and paralyzation have more incommon than the letter P
  18. Aren't you hunting too close to this plot not to tip the deer off with your presence/entry/exit? Would back off your locations a bit and hit them on travel in....a mature buck or doe will almost always wind check a plot before entry used the mix when it first came out- deer ate it...remember the brassica in there smelled awful
  19. Threw down WW WR and some oats two weekends ago- touch early but soil is lacking more than I wish it was (or can afford to fix) and rain was pending...pretty easy to establish WR and WW with broadcast to bare soils IMO
  20. Can usually see on at Carlton Hill....if you miss it just look for the flashing lightbar or listen for the gun shots..if memory serves me correct it is only about 100".....but has enough allure to keep business coming
  21. The harvest numbers are way too statistically based not real data. yes, its their fault if mandated reporting is not enforced at least as much as the idiots that dont call in their kills. Do you really believe that ~45% of the bucks harvested where 2.5 or older....? If so you may have a KoolAid mustache. We have a very unique property that has been managed since the late 90s for QDMA and mature bucks. They are handing out the second highest amount of DMPs (~47000 if memory serves me correct) and the population just is not here. We will see an early ml season for does soon as well. Look at the season structure- its based on hunters- not deer. The youth season, crossbow (which isnt far away)......its all about new licenses being bought...not the sport, tradition or any other red plaid Hallmark moment you can picture. You will not see any more deer or more mature deer because of a biologist in this state (and their are some real good ones and some....)- its all on your accord. Not trying to sell a conspiracy theory...or crap up a thread that shows why our 6 weeks of gun blazing makes us troll golf courses in urban areas to see mature bucks....just ponder it....the next time you tell the Rosie robot on decals you shot an 8 pt buck what value that really lends itself......
  22. This is the first thread I have ever wanted to +1 nearly every comment- Low stress and 4 years of age...not genetics- pumpkins injecting lead into yearlings and a state that is focused on license sales(with showing no regard for game management or population) is where the problems are No hunting area where a few rule breakers will be hunting for sure..and lots of rule breakers in this state...
  23. Guess you have to use the same weapons you had used prior....... I am not for them for general use at all ... but I will say my guess is they will make them legal soon....also feeling like an early ML season is headed are way as per some of the DEC comments in pompous Piatts publication
  24. Whether it is strategy, ethics or knowledge NY hunters fall in the same septic tank everytime....
  25. pressureddeerpro.com Whitetail Icons- don higgins Teh new dougherty book isnt bad- though similar to prior. Same with Eberharts. New Bobby Worthington book.....
