3yo- bases, belly and back...if neck was lower and tarsal staining was there i wouldve gone 4 110"ish when finished growing and hard horned...velvet judging is not a good practice

When do folks put their cameras in
gjs4 replied to eagle rider's topic in Trail Camera Reviews and Info
for inventory? a month or so ago. for "patterning"? second week of september -
You would have had way less responses if you asked have any of you scoring pros shot something bigger than this 120"er. Best way to relate to novice scoring is to divide the number of inches by twelve- so i could ask; Does that deer have 13 feet of antler?

Why Trail Cam Placement is Essential for Deer
gjs4 replied to NFA-ADK's topic in Trail Camera Reviews and Info
Fact- Ever deer is different. Fact- Every intrusion has a deer reaction of some sort. Fact- Silently glassing from afar has less of an impact than cams. -
Congrats to you but why would you want a picture of a buck that you know is already there and risk moving him out? Glass it from afar, figure out his moments (inc escape routes) and other buck presence...match the conditions and hunt him early season Hunted the refuge for ducks last year and found a mature buck bed within gun range of 63. Most folks are to lazy to scout and that's why posting things like this about that area will just get it mobbed with more morons. Letchworth has B&C deer within a few hundred yards of allowable hunting....

Other than my home being in the woods there is nothing country about me beyond hunting. Most people are shocked to find out I hunt and very few could fathom the effort I put forth into deer biology and hunting. I never wear camo in public, hate country music, drive a Forester without any bumper stickers and never watched a NASCAR race in my life. My wife sports a good amount of ink and looks like 50s pinup girl. I never downplay my love of the outdoors or endorse. To each their own and I couldn't care less who likes that or not; just who I am. I am not that proud of many of the slobs who broadcast their love of hunting/gun ownership distastefully. The "bleed em out" "bambi killer" and assorted shirts and stickers give us a black eye in modern society. When the SAFE act stuff hit I went to a few rallies- WOW! Some real ignorant poorly displayed opinions there. Sad but true. Not sure what this thread is about...or why you posted it....but see some point to it....then again if you insult the sport (not the players) I will defend it tooth and nail and have been scouting deer since last December while most watch TV most of the year.....be a good ambassador for your loves and our heritage.

Happen to be friends w a couple guys who trophy hunt the swamps....buy that video i referenced....you have lots to learn and would guess 95% of the guys that hunt the swamps have no idea what theyre doing. I know a guy from work that shot a 150s 100 yds from the p lot last year....total luck. Killers wear waders and canoes. Learn to find trees and bedding on small islands. Walk the edges of cat tails and high ground...youll find the beds on the bumps..

BEST TIP- forget everything you ever learned gun hunting Sit the downwind side of food sources in sug and early sept with binos and learn to hunt (the right way) all over again.

what is on the outlying properties in terms of cover, food and season pressure/presence? If there an overall plan and flow of movement here? Are you adding mock scrapes or other social features? The thick early successional stuff looks nice as bedding but is it too thick? Perhaps something to check out right after season. Where are your entry and exit routes? did you plant based on stand sites or the other way around? Obviously the west is bedding and could be crazy w the atypical east wind. I would hunt sparingly as you are drawing from two bedding areas....one down wind of you and your plots the other directly upwind which is already inclined for nightime movement...easy to over pressure....would hunt that creek on a north wind...so sexy. good luck

Check out Bill Vales book- the best for folks like us here in NY...nothing close Herndons book is a staple. Millers stuff is okay. Eberharts are good but all the same IMO. Rothaar, Worthington and Higgins have wrote some good ones worth reading. Fidduccias are decent too. Blood Brothers Outdoors has a couple of DVDs everyone should own/watch too.

I feel like every lazy pumpkin is backing crossbows ....NYON news has my blood boil with each issue...I am shocked (but thankful) it got shot down again but feel like its borrowd time as they will do anything for $$$$ in this state

If you were so far away I would say stop by Few buddies and i are knee deep in them and have been for years. One buddy has a 45 pacnor, another a 40 and 45 rem (cant use the 40 here) and mods them himself with adding the third pilar and cryo. 5744 isnt bad- like 4759 better. 4198 let me down in cold temps and i shoot reloader 7 now. THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO KNOW ABOUT SAVAGES IS THEY ALL LIKE DIFFERENT LOADS. I shoot a stout load pushing a 300gr barnes original which took me alot of playing to find. My farthest kill was 310yds and i have flattened many from 5 yards to 250. Zeroed at 200 it is a point and pull for a guy who practices. The changes barrel guns shoot even flatter. The pacnor set up Bill has will be near 2k so it comes down to budget too. Add a boyds thumbhole and aftermarket trigger to a bunch of bench time and you have a ml that will shoot with a rifle reliably. email me with any questions....i have posted a few times about it on here....google dougs savage ml forums.....ton of info there

There's charlie, there's Bill Vale, there's Jeff Murray... The moon acts like an accelerator but will not trump pressure or weather. All three are rather similar in their predictions this year....and there will be some breeding early OCT I thought I got the moon deal after both Charlies and Jeffs books- Vales is what finally nailed it in my head .... and its so often overlooked- the moon may turn them on but if you dont have the first doe or two in; youlll miss that TV quality crazed chasing like we all hope for....and some big bucks just dont breed

Belo is right Corn also is food source that is available from emergence to post chop. Soys lose their palatablity when they brown (unless wet!).Soys are highly desired- corn is way less than most people think.Corn may leave scraps to eat post pick (or even chop) where soys are gone when theyre harvested. My guess is every good buck around will be bedding and feeding on that field until late August- a few may hang until Sept harvest thereafter and then your next food source will be the place to be- Big difference...and this is where monitoring your herd and individual buck habits pays off
-
Simple NY fact- most hunters do the same lazy things- break that pattern and your odds increase of making the atypical happen. Great idea. Deer bed based on being downwind or eye shot of threats- water is not an anticipated entry. Folks who kill big bucks know the relationship to mature animals and wet feet. They prefer this bedding to shake coyotes and scent tracking predators. Ice is a variable to be learned. Ideas like this are what take folks into the minority of guys with the skill set to kill big ones. Run with it- regardless if folks on a forum praise or chastise it. Life vest is the only way to row DEC will remind you of that too even if it is a foot deep. check out the Blood Brothers Outdoors Marsh Country Bucks Dvd- would help out with this approach..think its $10 from GM or cabelas. good luck

Agreed!!! This website started well back in the day and was overthrown, prior to the rename even, by a number of narcissistic know it alls who instantly go for blood when threatened. This place should be call the "I want" club house. If mentioned antlers on here you will be persecuted. Most guys on here rather be a keyboard bully than admit they suck at hunting or focus their energizes on websites and the actions to which we are supposed to be convening here to discuss. For the few good hearted members with contributions or questions posed there appears to be the other 90% whom try to force their thoughts/arrogance as fact while continuing the close minded flock of dumbdumb righteous orange consumers thumbing the chest of those with untrheatened passions and half a brain. Yup it is your legal ability to shoot baby deer, immature deer or whatever you want. The state recommends you dont on their website and in literature. In the southern zone it is about self control and understanding the ecosystem. Gun yourself that handsome 3 pt fawn because there is no law against it....but dont puff your chest out to those of us that can find more in the experience than blasting the first brown thing that walks by. Keep taking away from the experience. Ever seen the loser buying bait at Gander or Dicks.... lazy cheaters....like ...um....SIMPLY PUT- guys who shoot little bucks do so because they feel/know they cannot do better. Be honest with yourself and others... I am sure you willcome out in droves to protect your childish behavior because no one likes the truth...enjoy your tough guy rebuttals.... I couldnt care less nor will even entertain reading them as I am in the woods doing something enjoyable and productive.

5. eaten alot of buck tags but never a doe tag. By the way; Do most folks realize most 100" bucks in the centrla and westerr portion of the state is only 2 years or older?
-
simple logic here big buck -age; which is rare in ny, comes from not being dead which comes from not doingt he same dumb $hit the pile of dead 1.5s did anyone who hunts mature bucks (and potentially does) with any success will tell you theyre totally different in actions for all periods of the hunting seasonwith the potential exception of the seeking/lockdown stages. Some dont even breed, some fight, others do neither.....some walk with the wind.......

Nothing better for hunting.Wind map your stands in the summer with a smoke bomb (flea market) in a coffee can.
-
Blood Bros have two DVDs- (no books) and theyre amazing. No entertainment and all education. The eberhart ones (which are now at cableas for 15$ for all three on one disc) are decent. Lots of good books. Knowing what your hunting I would suggest hunting trophy whitetails by herndon. huntingbeast.com - great insightful website pm for more ideas and takes...my lousy reply is most people on here are guys who want big bucks but will do nothing for effort when it all boils down to it remember NY is all high pressure....let your wind torch your neighbors ground- unless they own the bedding. thermals- am your scent goes upward...pm downward. your core stands will do some damage to deer movement in the pm....am only and basically you are hunting buck bedding imo good luck and be safe
-
How do you enter and exit? tough ground with a west or south west wind....and the central group of stands looks damaging in terms of pressure. Do you understand thermals? Have any topos? What has summer time observation shown you vs last winters observations?
