Freaks of Four Seasons.
dbHunterNY replied to Four Season Whitetail's's topic in Hunting Related Pictures
so what's going to happen with the 3 yr old? i believe you said you only keep them for so long. -
he still did the work no doubt but not as impressive as the video wants it to be. video is sped up. can tell by his foot movements. also i'm sure he took a break every time the camera footage cut to another scene. would've been just as fast and safer with two hands on one splitting maul. it's not oak or maple, but something like ash that practically falls apart when struck. again not trying to take away from the job done.

rob what public land are you scouting? i might be able to steer you to some good spots.

How About Some Rain
dbHunterNY replied to landtracdeerhunter's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
i don't think i've ever seen a plot that flat and i'm not really that far northwest of you! definitely wet all over here. pretty much thinking i'm going to have to use the belly mower or brush hog on the tractor to mow anything. even then the ag tires are making a mess. -
happy bday!

hopefully Larry gets as many happy endings on his birthday as that guy! ...from Larry's other half though... obviously.

where the farm is we look after each other and neighbors have at decent enough relationships. at my house 20+ minutes away it's different. mix of folks that are just funny when it comes to "their deer". just yesterday i was driving home from work. stopped alongside the road less than a mile from my house and small property there to look at a bachelor group out in the field. they typically end up behind my house in my creek bottom during the season. most drove by seeing me in my dress clothes with binos in hand. one SUV stopped about a 100 yards down the road. i was expecting them to back up or turn around and talk like some have (had great conversations with hunters down the road that way). instead they sat their for 10 minutes in the distance while i glassed. then they layed on their horn for a while and drove off. didn't phase me or the deer a bit. like i said some are funny, whether a hunter or anti-hunter.

we already went down that road a long time ago. as i do recall neither one of us changed our minds and it took me pages just to get you to admit simple facts that you danced around. one being your pets inside the fence aren't guaranteed to be CWD free with no worries about shipping them because you'd only know if they were all tested and that means they'd all be dead. i don't think the sky is going to fall when it comes to CWD but i'm not going to pretend it's nothing more than a "money grab" either.

i don't know if George from DeerAg is still around but that was one of his pet peeves. That's why he'd package the seed separately. broadcast different seed types and size at the same time and you'll get different rates per acre.

region around Binghamton seems to be flooded in many spots from what i'm seeing from friends and wife's extended family. i watched video of the place just across the border in PA were we stayed for her cousin's wedding. there was a river flowing through it!

you missed the deer. must have died from laughing so hard. keep practicing you'll get it!
-
i used to be unsure if that was truly the effect. @G-Man brought that up in the very beginning. I'm now on board with both of you. Nobody takes off the day before like they did the day of when it was Monday. Annual hunting part at camp got moved to the weekend before and it just wasn't the same. good time to be on stand and people had stuff going on as it wasn't weekend before opening day.

but does it say OBO? what about trades?
-
it says Tiger Woods is making a come back. drove it right down the middle and then sunk one in for par. managed to stay out of the rough.

maintenance man?? lol you don't even know the guy! He said UNLIKELY. He didn't say either that they needed to do those things to contract it. He was describing situations that would lead to likely contact with other deer which would be the best way to get CWD, if deer around were spreading it. no reason to insult to guy for giving his at least somewhat professional opinion.

there's a couple of sides regarding the last email. what DEC Mike said in his email is fairly sound other than the idea he's brushing off that fact it's abnormally skinny. it may just be last years winter was tough on it for whatever reason and it's just playing catch up though. i wouldn't rule it out there might be something else wrong. he might follow up later and ask for any additional sightings and observations of the deer. DEC doesn't take action at a whim because they do get lots of reports of young skinny deer from concerned people. even if you hit a deer and it's upright and alert they leave it and give it time rather than shoot it. their s*&^ happens attitude is what it is with them dealing with a lot of people. i still agree it's UNLIKELY it was CWD. are you still seeing it? getting any worse? being gaunt from CWD is because the deer is too out of it to realize it needs to eat. to me seemed like it was acting like any other young ignorant backyard buck from what you typed.

Archery tags , dmps , regular gun season , ml season
dbHunterNY replied to turkeyfeathers's topic in General Chit Chat
honestly i usually hold back and not fill the tags i could here in 4C. if i filled all my tags in WMU 4C near home i'd be called an SOB and would have people throwing bricks through my windows. DEC's goal for here is 3.2 doe per square mile. i did receive a dmp for here though and i don't even think an act of God would prevent it from getting filled. at 20% success rate here no way am i letting it go to waste. for the contest i made my 2nd choice 4J (city of Albany) just to ensure i would even have 4 total tags to begin with. that'll be a bit more difficult as it's extremely limited access, bow only, and probably stuck hunting the only one piece of public land there. -

what Moog said. I'll add in something else. Us lesser hunters that don't get more than (1) DMP for the area we hunt do it a little differently. we use the one antlerless only bow/muzzleloader tag first, versus the DMP. that way you're not forced to pass doe all during regular season while you have a bow/ml antlerless tag sitting in your pocket. either sex or buck tags are always saved to hunt a buck through all seasons. -
we haven't been around tracking it long enough to determine what cycle is broken. i fully believe pushes toward cleaner energy is smart. however, all the fear mongering is a little much. i sat in for Al Gores global warming (now climate change) pitch when i was in college. i agree with the data and the drive to make things better. i think the projections and spin he and others have put on it is a crock of shit and easy to justify as it makes them money. as an electrical engineer i also took a private tour of the NY Power Authority facilities. They thought it was hilarious what he was pitching knowing how high his electric bill was and how much energy he was using. i don't remember the numbers but it was flat out disgusting. i do think all this climate change is going to happen weather we like it or not. it's nature and nothing we do can or should do to stop it. i think it's going to be a real b*&^% in the mean time. weather systems are more volatile and fall out from huge fluctuations in temps throughout the year have effects we notice. coolest thing about the movie "day after tomorrow" who's to say that couldn't happen?

i have scentblocker and scentlok activated carbon clothing. i've always bought it post season on super clearance. it helps. i don't care what anyone says. it reduces your scent. you can't eliminate it but with other scent control it's often enough to keep the deer in range a little longer. it's like you thinking you smell something and taking some time to sort it out versus someone shoving an open gym bag in your face. reactions are different and how swiftly you take action is different. honestly more than anything they're usually very comfortable and functional clothing though.

If there's a small patch of cover with routes to flee then deer will use it and let you walk on by. Most spots accessible get some kind of traffic close. Just have to scout smart and figure out what the deer and people do. Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

i know a lot of people going for 46er status that are taking a while. they end up redoing peaks because they're joining others. solo probably helped you out there. definitely wouldn't want to try the winter 46er solo but i know others who still liked it. weather i've heard draws that one out for a while.

SST bullets have been more accurate potential and have better ballistics. been hit and miss for me terminal performance wise. i've really only used them a lot out of a muzzleloader though and a little in rifles. Remington Cor-lokts like any other jacketed pointed soft point have been around forever for a reason. started with them and used for probably a decade. i've had really good luck with federal fusion and have been using that for a while now and prefer them over the other two at least when it comes to use in a rifle.

on public land... totally. deer patterns on a wednesday can be vastly different than on a saturday or sunday.
