i'm okay with heights. snakes are on the ground.
-
my thoughts. not much for heights scares me but awareness definitely kicks in.

i have a ton of spots prepared for my climber. i almost always use that. too many people scout me more than the deer. i use a rope style tree strap that's easy to work up the tree with me as i climb. each section connected, me to the top and top to the bottom, so i'll never lose one. i've learned to climb slow anyway. it's quieter and i don't start to over heat and sweat.

paper is sitting on the kitchen table haven't read it yet. ECO's around here have said they don't like nuisance permits. they feel they're poorly tracked. despite the wildlife tech out this way is awesome. i don't like nuisance tags either. DMAP tags on the other hand has the highest success rate, property specific, and tracked well enough. we send in a harvest report every year for them and do a management plan every 3 years to continue getting them. i'll have to read it tonight when i have some time.

for the local QDMA branch i'm associated with, we have educational displays within a booth at fairs in each NY county we represent. i was just at the Saratoga county fair on Saturday. i had just as many non-hunters stop and be very engaged asking questions about deer biology, ecology, hunting them, etc. they often pay attention the most. i had 3 groups come through that were thinking they'd take up hunting soon. range of reasons why. i get hazed at work if i don't bring in venison for some period of time. snack sticks and jerky are a favorite.

nope. gone a long time ago. how do you think a single lady can clear land for soo many food plots?
-
to hunt NYS land you'll need to pay an extra "use tax" i'm sure. most will still hunt private land but property size will be much smaller. any bigger acreage will be hunting clubs or corporate tracts with a locked gate and $$ to hunt and/or enter. QDM co-ops will be by far more prevalent. some will still fail and struggle. others that excel in hunter management, communication, and relations will thrive. despite i want some form of buck regulation like antler restrictions now, i'd like to think we'd be largely beyond their need by then. basic aspects of qdm will be common knowledge, thus having some BS naturally sorted out and diffused in a hurry. we won't need those deer management oriented regulations we'd covet now as much, as they'll be a safety net that rarely catches a body. others would be probably be the focus. youth and new hunter programs and opportunity will be more prevalent then a half ass'd youth weekend. to one extreme, maybe we'd even have off limits public land to use as proving grounds and for education for only them. all in all hunting will be just as enjoyable, but different just as it has changed this past century. there will always be battles to fight to keep it alive, but no doom and gloom in sight for me.

you sir are the definition of awesomeness!

i'll have to pass this on to a vegetable farmer i know.

haha... that'd probably work. whatever to distract him from anything but aiming might be a good thing. your mind can only so many things at once.

"back tension release" can mean different things. you have a hinge style with no trigger, a thumb trigger hand held, and pure back tension that goes by pull weight to make it fire. any one of those you can "punch" just like an index finger trigger release. I shoot competition with thumb trigger release but still use an index trigger/wrist strap release for hunting. hinges are best left to indoors. don't have control to back off making it fire if say there's a gust of wind, deer changes position, or something else happens. problem with "target panic" and index triggers are they aren't a nice trigger. you can feel creep movement, grit, and you're expected to "punch it" to an extent in a sense that you have to stay committed and ride it out. thumb triggers like my Stanislawski and similar brand releases have triggers comparable to the sweetest rifle trigger you've felt. if you drop them on a hard surface like ledge or a rock they can and often break from hardened polished sear damage. they're cold to hold on to. with gloves you don't have as secure a hold like with a wrist strap locked to your hand. also they're $200+ new. just some things to consider before making the jump to a hand held. you've been a good shot. you're just rusty. no need to label it. your fine. i don't have experience with it (new) but TruFire has the panic-X release out now. might want to give it a look/try. otherwise you just have to get back in the saddle. start with a big target/aiming spot and not much distance. closer and close your eyes if need be. otherwise, pull arrows if you find yourself aiming at them. unless your way off the deep end on the first arrow, shoot until you honestly know your punching it. stop and walk away. do this until you can shoot a bunch of arrows and spend time practicing. then work into driving tacks and stretching out distance. don't try to ride through the bad shooting or let your bow down to try seconds later. it's not your muscles it's your mind that needs the rest and reset. target panic is only your head thinking too much. close enough is good enough. vitals are much bigger around than the end of the arrow. sky won't fall if the arrow isn't perfect. another thing that can work is do something like shoot while your counting or listening to music you know the lyrics to. anything to distract your noggen so it thinking is not getting in the way. muscle memory should still be there. nothing should be a prioritized in your head other than aiming. even if you've got to sit there at full draw until your fatigued to let down because you never released an arrow.

i was looking for trucks about four years back and they seemed crazy expensive. part of my problem is room for car seats and need to four doors or at least room in the back. ended up finding a used low mileage Honda Ridgeline. i make it work but it's not a truck. it's a car/truck. haven't had any real problems with it and it's a '07 with over 100k on it. problem is there's nothing wrong with it right now and i can't justify taking on big truck payment. i'm not a contractor or anything either so i can't write it off. guess i'm stuck. happy shopping!

we have three swamps that are used as sanctuaries on our property. everyone borders the property line, unfortunately. just the lay of the land with nothing you can do about it. none have stands. just inviting tresspassers to hunt them and making think it's good deer hunting or something big must be there to warrant a stand going up. instead they're POSTED heavily. any thing that can resemble a trail gets flagging ribbon across it.

i typically toss them into the hedge rows of the fields. something always finds them but birds of prey not so much. doesn't seem to be much of a concern with other predators.

there was a time when i've walked into a couple gun shops for the first time in my life. the store manager knew me and greeted me as i walked into the door. never a good sign when you intend on just stopping in to check it out without necessarily making a purchase. things are tack drivers. should work well.

not a chance. i believe some are old photos, as their dates suggest.

I've been slowly keeping some winter weight each season. tough with a desk job. I've got a dad bod now but not too long ago I was in decent shape when i lived and did more on the farm. I used to do things like martial arts and box. heavy bag is in basement collecting dust. rattles pictures and other stuff up stairs. not sure how others make it work. tread mills upstairs now in our bedroom collecting clothes. gym setup downstairs collecting dust. i should get off my a&& too. not sure my state of mind is there though. lol good luck moog.

the one by me was something like mid august. staff said prices of most stuff would keep getting knocked down.
-
sometimes twice all year long. sometimes every day i hunt. depends on how it's setup and where. sanctuaries have a cam that sets without touching it. cam on field scan mode at the edge of a plot right next to a stand and relatively away from a deer's travel path gets checked every time i hunt that spot. in general though cams get checked every couple weeks.

I Got Bit...ignorant dog owners are out there
dbHunterNY replied to greg54's topic in General Chit Chat
then chances are it bit someone or an animal, i was lucky to fend it off, and i'd need to know if it was vaccinated, etc. i'd call 911 if i had cell service or otherwise contact authorities. owner is asking for it if they come forth later on. -
the swivel studs screwed into a wood stock can sometimes back out half a turn but the sling if left on keeps them from coming out more i've found. if you're talking about the swivel hardware on the sling look into Outdoor Connection Talon swivel connectors. i've had no issues since i've used them forever ago. have had to replace one either.

more or less. the less being my trad gear. my compounds are tools that produce results, but almost all end up getting passed onto whoever knows me and wants to start bowhunting. any trad bow i've had is held more dearly. out of everything i enjoy shooting those the most despite i'm not as effective with them. i won't refuse to hunt with anything else so i wouldn't say i love it, but it's darn close.
-
i already hit that the closest one to me hard. i'd be afraid to go back! lol that's a heck a deal though. some of their prices before discounts were alright and some seemed markedup. i feel like things that were bigger or would have less wide spread demand had the best pricing. a lot of outdoors run of the mill stuff wasn't really much of a deal at all.

they're better slings. people i know that use them say they're durable too. i almost got one but came across Slogan Outdoors Ultraflex slings. guaranteed for life. similar to the claw whole thing is some kind of rubber except the outdoor connection swivels on the ends. it stretches just enough to give a solid hold in different positions, carry it like a pack, and gives when you're walking to reduce fatigue. yours should serve you well. another note i haven't been to the crossgates store in a while. probably ever since they opened up the Field&Stream. my life is absolute chaos lately but we'll have to meet up one of these days. we're too close not to.
