  1. That would be 4 THIS year, but not 4 per year. Big difference.
  2. Depends on the type of powder that was used. Dawn works great with real black powder. A cleaner like simple green is good with most others. If really bad, use some brake cleaner to get it stripped back to bare metal. Then use a regular protectant like Rem oil or Sheath. Stay away from Bore Butter - it is a wax based inhibitor and not a preventive.
  3. The woods I was in yesterday got too dark by 4:30 to even think about taking a shot where one could identify the target, pick a spot, and be sure the lane was clear with nothing beyond. You can't have a law that varies for conditions and is open to interpretation. It has to be for worst case scenario which is for thicker woods.
  4. Fawns might weigh as little as 50 lbs. Yearlings in season are 1.5 years old and will be at least a 100 lbs.
  5. I would love to see some real proof of this. Not rumors or opinions - real proof. Insurance companies do not loose money on deer - the adjust the rates in areas of higher collisions.
  6. Thinking of crossing property lines and taking a dog? It's not just ethics your're breaking - it's a couple laws.
  7. Meat - based on your description, I would be almost positive you hit backstrap just above the spine. Arrow here usually hangs in as it it solid meat/muscle. And muscle hits bleed exactly as yours. Most survive just fine.
  8. Right of recovery from neighbors land is one of the top considerations when looking at smaller lots. You can shoot a deer in your driveway - but need to be able to recover.
  9. And the news report and pics are where?
  10. And "little Billie-Bob with stupid parents" won't be any smarter at 14 than 13. Nor does he have anything to do with with little William- Robert with "smart" parents being ready to hunt.
  11. Already said - for the parents to decide when their child is ready. Pretty clearly stated, but didn't capitalize - sorry.
  12. Miss the CLOSELY SUPERVISED? That's why it is in caps. No more danger to other hunter from a CLOSELY SUPERVISED youth than from any other hunter out there. There is no magic age when someone automatically becomes safe to hunt. And no way some government agency can tell which 12 year old is good to go. We surrender enough to create a false sense of security, but everyday brings demands for more. Let parents raise their own kids.
  13. Didn't read the thread. JMO - it should be the parents call when to start CLOSELY SUPERVISED hunting.
  14. If you can't follow what I wrote Belo, I'll have to go with Bubba on this one.
  15. A question for those who feel a 1% sampling is all that is needed on an issue this divisive: Why bother with and the mandatory check in of kills when a 1% sample is all that is needed for an accurate count?
  16. Since you missed this part, I will repeat it for you. Try to follow.
  17. How does killing 20,000 1.5 and 40,000 2.5 help? Or 60,000 2.5? How does hunters killing bucks at all "help" the herd? Guess I don't get the question.
  18. It's either archery equipment and allowed for all (my choice) or it's not and no one uses it. If you want to give the disabled access with non archery weapons, let them use any legal weapon.
  19. Doewacker - I ask the same question and never get a response. The vast majoruty talk about a mature buck but are happy with that 2.5 ( equal to a 13 year old boy in maturity) and not actual mature deer. Then you have those who will pass a 4 pt but shoot an1.5 6 point - because their standard is 6 or better. For most it is not really about "herd health" or actual mature deer. It is about a little older teenage equivalent buck and telling others to accept their standards.
  20. Obviously - but neither is mature Then why choose a system where the best of the 1.5 are legal to shoot and are in fact targeted. In 7j and h, nearly 2/3 of the 1.5 are 6 or better. If hunters truly care about balancing age structure, they will learn to get a feel for the age of bucks and quit killing the young ones just because they meet an arbitrary points number. I am in no way trying to argue that there are no positives to letting bucks get older - I do it myself and talk to others about it all the time for education. What I am saying is don't make a system mandatory that sounds good short term, but will have have little long term statistical difference in much of the state. Especially when the mind set will be a 1.5 or 2.5 is great as long as it has X number of points. Education while slower, will have a real long term effect when hunters learn to understand it. But as a society we want the quick fix feel good solution even if it is no fix at all.
  21. 1.5 buck (spike or 6/8 pt) = 8 yr human 2.5 buck (spike or 6/8 pt) = 13 yr human 3.5 buck = 18 yr hunan - not mature enough to drink. http://easycalculation.com/other/fun/Deer-years-to-Human-years.html
  22. Let the spikes walk, but shoot a 6 even if it's a 1 or 2.5? Still a young deer. Let the spikes walk, but shoot an 8 even if it's a 1 or 2.5? Still a young deer. Let the spikes walk, but shoot an 8 even if it's a 1 or 2.5? Still a young deer. And ones with the best potential. Points based AR cannot make any real statistical difference as long as the young deer still get targeted and shot. Unless what the AR supporters really want is a little bit older deer, but really don't care about hunting actual mature bucks. Holding out for a 6 or better with no regard for age is just a cop out feel good management strategy.
  23. And one fact is if you shoot a 6 pt at 1.5 it never gets older.
