I killed plenty of deer in the 60s and 70s with several different smoothbores and bead sights....The best shooting one was a 20 gauge skeet gun with double beads...However about 1980 I mounted a 1.5 Weaver scope on the skeet gun and never looked back.. A few years later when rifled barrels became available, I switched to a rifled, cantilever barreled 12 gauge with a Weaver 2.5.. Adjustable rifle type sights are much more accurate and effective than " apple on a stick" bead sights, and scopes are better yet... About the best I could ever do with the double bead skeet barrel was to keep my shots on a 9" paper plate at 75 yards...With my rifled, scope sighted 12 gauge I got consistent 4" groups at 100 yards from the bench..

The Mermaid received a text yesterday evening..The stand belongs to her nephew, who has had permission in past years to hunt.. However, he has previously hunted the other end of the property, well away from my foodplots...I'll have a little discussion with him regarding the location of his stand... He's a good kid and I'm sure there will be no problem... BTW...Checked my trail cam yesterday and saw several bucks, including a couple of respectable 8 points, plus a bunch of turkeys ( one of which was actually strutting) and a dandy bear...

Good luck, Phade...I have been hunting deer for about 55 years, and have spent THOUSANDS of hours in the woods pursueing all kinds of game, but that buck is so much bigger than ANY buck I have ever seen that it may as well be a different species....Good luck, My Friend !- 10374 replies

BTW, Enigma....I can't see the breast feathers on that bird to make a positive ID, but judging by the head a nd general size of the bird, I believe it is a bearded hen...

Those young birds in the fall are good eating....One good way is to skin them whole and roast them in a roasting bag with whatever seasonings float your boat....You don't have to cook them too long, perhaps 1 1/2 hours at 325/350..They are very good that way....Tough old gobblers are a different matter...

Are you sure you have the friction rings adjusted properly ? Makes a big difference, especially in cold weather...Check online for friction ring adjustment for Browning A-5..The actions are basically the same..

I'll save you some squirrel tails and if I am lucky enough to kill a duck or two, perhaps some wood duck or mallard flanks...

Anyone who hasn't lost a few deer hasn't hunted much.... Ain't no flies on the .308 as a deer cartridge....Buy a bigger gun if it makes you feel better, but the .308 will do the job on deer from any angle, as long as the shot placement is right..

Hope you get your bucky and then get lucky LATER too !! <<smile>>…..

VERY cool....I had a Sportsman 48 in 28 gauge ….As you say, identical to the 11-48 except a 3 shot capacity...Shucks, I never put more than 3 shells in my 11-48 16 gauge anyway....I killed my first limit of grouse with it opening day in 1965....4 grouse with 6 shots....One of only 2 or 3 times I ever killed a limit of grouse in a day... That was back when my reflexes were quicker and you could flush 20 or 30 grouse per day...Hehehe....

No wonder that doe looks big, Eddie...She has 4 extra legs !! Reminds of something that happened to me quite a few years ago...I shot an adult doe and she went running..I knew I had drilled her through the boiler room and could see the blood squirting as she ran...I walked up to the place where she stood , and there lay a button buck, shot through the head...The 12 gauge Win BRI slug had passed through the doe and hit the button buck squarely in the head...I never saw him until I walked up to him...

Congrats, my friend !! That shotgun appears to be a rem 11-48....My first repeating shotgun was an 11-48 in 16 gauge ..I bought it used for $85 in 1964....I hope you gave the pup an extra treat or two this evening for a good day's work...<<GRIN>>….

Praise the Lord...Those legs and thighs on that little peep will be just fine....Bon Apetit and congrats...

Who carries a handgun while hunting?

What is legal and what you choose to do is entirely up to you, as far as I am concerned... Just don't whine if you get busted... -
Who carries a handgun while hunting?
Pygmy replied to pitweiler's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
It is illegal to carry a firearm of ANY type when bowhunting during the special bowhunting season... Other than that, you can carry at any time, as far as I know, except perhaps when mentoring a youth hunter during the special youth hunt..... -
Any Hare or grouse hunters have success this season?
Pygmy replied to Gunner's topic in Small Game and Predator Hunting
I haven't flushed 12 grouse here in Steuben County in the last two years...When I was 14, I killed 14 grouse my first year of hunting with a single shot 16 gauge...It was m nothing to flush 20-30 birds in a day of hunting, WITHOUT a dog...That was back when the cover was at optimum for grouse and rabbits, however.. I have done a limited amount of hare hunting, but loved every minute of it. but all my hare hunting has been done later in the winter, with a good snow cover.. -

I never saw that Tacks, but on a remote caribou hunt in northern Quebec in 1998, the cook was cracking caribou bones and roasting them in the oven to render down the marrow into a paste, which he used in a lot of his cooking... I am sure Chef is familiar with this... His name was Stefan and he was good cook, although all of us in camp suspected he was cooking in a remote hunting camp because he was a fugitive from justice...Hehehe...

Cool, John....Couldn't you send a drone over him and drop a torpedo/arrow on him ?......Hehehe...

IMHO goose hunting is MUCH more fun than deer hunting !! A few years back during gun season I hunted a stand on a hedgerow on the top of a hill with my Rem XP-100 260 Rem...Good place to shoot a deer at 150-250 yards...However the deer were not showing but the geese kept buzzing the hedgerow, so the next dat I took the pistol AND my Browning Citori, and had a ball shooting geese...- 10374 replies
