Back in the 1990s.....It was the last day of gobbler season and the first season since 1975 that I had not killed a gobbler in NY... A gobbler gobbled on the roost near a field edge, and then I heard a hen tree yelping about 100 yards from him....I got between them and flushed them in opposite directions... Now I was set....The gobbler had gone north and the hen south, and I was right between them..I was sure that when they settled down they would meet on the field edge, where I was set up... I popped a hen decoy out in the field in front of me and settled in for the wait.. I heard no gobbling, but eventually the hen came out and approached my decoy...I watched her for awhile..Still no gobbling.. I finally decided that if the gobbler were to come out, the hen might go to him and screw me up, so I got up to flush the hen out of the field.. As soon as I stepped out of the brush ( without my gun) I looked to my right and there stood the gobbler....He had come in silent, and of course in about a second he was gone.... I picked up my decoy and went home, and although I can't remember, I hope I did something constructive like mowing my lawn...

Holy shit, Batman !! Most of my firearms have cost less than that spinning reel !! Of course, most of them were bought prior to 1990, but STILL !!

Geeze...I wish I had known that...I'd have taken your girl with me...How old was she in 1974 ?? Actually, there as a girl that lived on the south side who might have gone with me, but my wife got pissed off whenever I hung out with her.. She had the greatest body of any girl I ever went into gun shops with...Probably weighs 300 pounds now, if she's still alive..

" Ray Hotchkiss gun wax"...That's a blast from the past.... What a great gun shop Ray had...!!...Lots of quality used guns at reasonable prices.. I bought my first handgun there in 1974 ( New)... It's a S&W M 17 K-22 Masterpiece, and it is the last handgun I would ever part with...

Yes....As a matter of fact, the collar had been rubbing badly on the bear's neck, so they removed it to allow her to heal, and chose not to replace it..She did get two brand new ear tags, though..

I had a Heddon Crazy Crawler back in the day...Caught a few bass on it, but it didn't work as well as an Arbogast Jitterbug, which I caught a LOT of bass on, mostly at night... -
The Mermaid's sister got a call from a DEC biologist regarding a bear that was denned on her property... She gave permission for them to go to the den and check out the critter, including darting it, tagging etc. etc.. It was a female and everybody was hoping it had cubs.. We had quite an entourage...One DEC biologist, two DEC technicians, one veterinarian, One Professer from NY College of the Fingerlakes, 12 graduate students, two game wardens, 5 high school students, One old man (me) and two old women ( Mermaid and her sister)... The bear was in a HUGE pile of bulldozed trees...She was successfully tranquilzed, and to everybody's disappointment, had no cubs... It was still pretty cool...Everybody who wanted to got to climb into the brushpile and view the bear..I declined, because I have seen bears before, but the DEC personnel helped The Mermaid and her sister ( who is 82) to get into the den and see the bear..We have some pictures, but it just looks like a dead bear, so I won't try to share them... Cool way to spend the morning, though, and I was impressed with the professionalism of the DEC personnel...

My local farm store is liquidating their stock of Mucks and going to Dryshod...My Mucks have a LOT of miles on them and are still dry and warm, but are showing definite signs of wear...I'm guessing I MIGHT get another season out of them.. If I can pick up another similar pair of Mucks at reduced rates, I'll grab them...If not, I'll pick up a pair of Dryshod and give them a try...

Glad to know you're not the dude wearing the "strap-on".....Hehehe... I'd hate to have him standing behind me when I'm bending over the rail fighting a fish !

I eat local freshwater fish a couple times per week....If I manage to survive two more weeks I'll be 70..... Perhaps I should have paid attention to the state health advisories and denied myself the pleasure of enjoying all of the wonderful perch, crappies, rock bass, bluegills, walleyes, bullheads, bass and trout that I have eaten over the last 60 + years... I might live a year or two longer...

Regardly the tendency for multiple kids to get in trouble... " One boy is half a boy....Two boys are no boy at all.." Or when he as annoyed at someone... " Why don't you just go and take a good s**t for yourself ? " The last time I saw My Dad ( whom I affectionately called " Fat Father" even though he was skinny as a rail) I was leaving his hospital room and I was busting his chops about something... He never said a word...He just looked at me and flipped me the bird... The next morning I got the call that he had passed away....
