  1. Idk...while it appears like "a lot of blood" I don't think its enough to show a great hit. Keep at it- look forward to seeing the pic of your deer tomorrow ...good luck
  2. Welcome...lucky grand kids!
  3. This season I took a spike with the bow not realizing it was a spike. I had all my tags and knew that I wanted a deer..any deer this year to get the skunk off me from last season. I saw this deer first a 100 yards away and knew it was a decent body size so I was gonna take it if it gave a chance. I can honesty say that I never looked at its head again until after I shot! Last season I busted myself with staring deer down or fidgeting or getting overly anxious. After the hit and it turned to run I saw the first glimpse of bone. Happy to have the meat and a skull to clean up for a DIY euro. I wonder though if I would have shot it if I knew it was a spike!?! If I passed I would be kicking myself and second guessing myself for sure now.
  4. Great job sacs ... Congrats on a beauty buck and a great story to be remembers for a long time. I, too, am in westchester and a bit curious about the whereabouts of your trophy success. I promise I won't steal your spot since I only hunt a management program in westchester - rest of my hunting is upstate.
  5. I used t hunt a piece of prop that ran next to this guy who would obsess over leaves on a hiking trains that ran the perimeter of his property. He would blow leaves t least three times throughout ow season. When. Would hear him coming, I knew my day was over...annoying is an understatment.
  6. That's what makes that rule so difficult. You may absolutely WANT to follow the rule but due to no fault of your own (cub is good at hiding) you bust a rule. Glad it worked out for you.
  7. Thanks everyone- I like the idea oosso buco I am just still a bit leery about all that connective sinew. DoeS anyone try to process any of that crap out- its a real PITA
  8. The only time I used salt to prepare my venison is one time on a gut shot deer to use as a rinsing agent. Other than that, I never used it to prepare it to cook. At times, have soaked it in milk which breast down some and makes tougher steaks more tender.
  9. I love the climbers even though its noisy getting set up. Flexibility is a huge benefit especially when hunting numerous properties that are pretty far from home- lots of flash scouting then hunting
  10. So I am processing a deer I took this past Sunday and just did one hind quarter tonight. Any advice for the shank potion of the hind quarter. So much sinew and connective crap. I watched some videos that say they jus use it as is for stew but seems too loaded with rubbery bits and not to appealing. How do you all process the shanks?
  11. I love FRESH fried heart - light dust of flour and fried in butter. So pissed off at myself- I left the heart neatly placed next to the deer I harvested this past Sunday evening. It was getting late and I was rushing a bit and left the heart! Damnit! Guess I need to get another one!
  12. I called late last night and went through the asinine conversation with a robotic voice- worked fine - they rattle off the confirmation number though. I had to listen three times to get it

    Ouchy

That sucks...hang in-always could have been worse I'm sure.
  14. Anyone know of any bird farms(pheasant, chukar, quail) near hillsdale/copake falls/Armenia? The land we leased has been deemed a preserve which allows us to purchas and release live birds. Lidos is on the far side and that's the only thing i have come up with besides Quattros which only has pheasant.
  15. I'm hoping to gather a few livers this year and send them out to be made into liverwurst. I neve really cared for the fried liver bt the heart is really quite good.
  16. Easy to set up since most are the pop-ip variety with imbedded spring loaded poles...harded to brush in and make look natural to the environment. Most people set them up way in advance of the season so deer can acclimate to its presences
  17. Very little time to get an evening hunt in for some pheasant with my Brittany- ran home from work loaded him up with all his gear and my clothes and drove like crazy to get to my spot. No cars in lot when I arrive which is unheard of for this public land area- quickly dress and prepare the dog- all set with about 90 minutes left of a great fall afternoon... Just need to grab my 12 gauge....where's my shotgun!?!? LEANING SAFELY INSIDE MY SAFE! Ever since, I have found myself pulling over as I enter the parkway near m house to re-check all my gear!
  18. Had a pack of three does come through at first light then a single a bit later- all were about 50 yards away right under a tree I was going to climb! GOOD CHOICE NUMBNUT!!! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  19. I'm planning on my first trip Friday to Saturday and now I see full rain Saturday. My only glimmer of light is tha they are so wrong so often that I am GLAD they predict rain now...most likely will change.
  20. Don't say malafakys - they close real early in the day- quattros doesn't take field dressed deer(only boned out venison to be processed and that only after thanksgiving). Warm temps are making me nervous - I like butchering myself but still need a place to cool it down if successful (we stay for 2-3 days since it's a bit if a trip) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  21. So, I never planned on actually hunting for bear on this property(or any other property for that matter). I would be one of those "opportunist" bear hunters that luckily harvest a bear while deer hunting. However, how many of you would now intentionally strategize for bear(need to learn about scent wicks and 1.5 oz rules!) based on a single camera pic at 3:00am two weeks prior to the season. We have 3 other cameras up on ths 50+ acres and no sign of him anywhere else. My question is is one picture enough to now truly hunt this bear or is he long gone by now? If you would hunt for it, what would you do to up yor chances?
  22. Thanks for all the opinions...I was struck by the size of the legs even around the "ankles". Again, I am absolutely new to seeing bear. Legs just seem so thick. Yet, the belly seems flat, almost taught...not the droopy, touch the ground belly that I have heard discussed
  23. I was shocked to see this guy/gal on the cam today. It's the only pic I have - can anyone tell if this is a "good bear" or small? I have ZERO bear experience- never seen one in the woods or trail cams or ever targeted them. Pretty cool!
  24. Just send her to PAULA'S house...she loves giving out money!!!
  25. Peanut chews...Copenhagen....water....potato and egg sandwich.....IN THAT ORDER
