  1. Why would you take the word of where your daughter stands from a person you clearly do not respect as per your other posts about her lying to the kids, no a ood teaher, etc? Wouldn't, like Deerthug said, you like an "honest" judge of her ability? The largest problem is the actual test that has been created to test students is based off of a new initiative called the Common Core. Interestingly, we educators have not be privy to or given adequate time to develop curriculum to teach this new Common Core. Your kid are being tested on material they have not been prepared for. And by the way, all the preparing that your kids have been subjected to has been done with previous tests in mind. In other words, they have been preparing for the wrong test! Here's a sample of some multiple-GUESS questions for you from the 6th grade reading comprehension section: If the author were to add another paragraph before the final paragraph, what would you expect it to be about? (All answers contained information about the main idea and could have easily been the choice so you are left to figure out what an unknown author should have included) Even better....what were you expecting to read about in the 2nd paragraph in the article? So just UN-remember what you already read and guess what you think the state wants you to say! Final example of idiocy..the first title of the first story this year had all the "the"s in the title capitalized...example, The Gopher, The Duck, and The Turle (not an actual title but you get the idea that only the first the should be capitalized). You learn that capitalization rule in about 2nd grade...great example to our kids.
  2. Well I survived a lunch of wild leeks in my omelet...going back tomorrow to load up
  3. If this test is indeed intended to evaluate the teacher(in reality, the test results are a small portion of overall teacher evaluation), how fair is that to educators? "Don't worry about it! Opt out! It means nothing."- not great motivation for students to show off their teacher's potential. How about my 6th grade student on Tuesday whose mother has not yet been heard from since she ran in the marathon? Here's an A student and stellar child, who was able to only compete 23 of the 42 questions on day 1-not easy to read stories through bouts of tears. I as a sixth grade teacher would much prefer to be tested to show my proficiency then use my 11 year old students to prove my worth. By the way, the majority of the new teacher evaluation is still related to the principal's evaluation and rightfully so. The only problem is that the principal's evaluation is also the main means to REMOVE A TENURED TEACHER and we all know how rarely that happens. Yes, tenured teachers can be removed when the school proves the teacher is sub-standard. Thats where the issue lies...administrators who do not have the balls to do ther job. Tenure = due process. It is not a force field. My biggest problem with being a teacher is dealing with the union. I feel the union needs to "police their own" in some ways. If the teachers union knows someone is a bad teacher, they should be at the forefront of improving the teacher or removing the teacher from the union(weakest link principle).
  4. ATbuckhunter..just curious of how long ago it was when you took those tests? A lot has changed in the last few years. Really Doc...teachers experiment on their students? The Brown eye/blue eye experiment happened in the 60s. Other than that experiment,to what else are you referring?
  5. These are the ones I picked...obviously after I cleaned them up. Think these are edible???
  6. Anyone else's kids ready to go to the mattresses if they are forced to sit through another state test. This week my 3rd grade daughter sat through 3-90 minute exams (1 per day). Next week, she does it all over again in math.
  7. I just found a massive field of leeks in the woods in which I walk my dog. Their stem do not appear as red/purplish as pictured above. Anything to worry about? Assuming they are safe, Do you eat them raw? Grilled? Boiled? Never had them but looking to experiment (with some guidance) And yes, my dog leaked on the leeks..those will be left for others to enjoy!
  8. Where's Joe Pesci character from "GoodFellas" when you need him?
  9. Besides the benefits for the disabled who are not physically capable of pulling back a vertical bow, why hunt with a crossbow? My guess would be because it is easier to shoot accurately at a slightly longer target (I have never shot a crossbow which is why that statement is only a guess) . If my guess is accurate, I can understand the concern of those against them during bow of guys grabbing a crossbow and heading to the field without spending the time perfecting their craft. This is not to say that there are not bowhunters out there who don't act similarly, but it seems that the crossbow offers an easier end which would require less practice.
  10. And I bet 10 years from now this thread will be on page 469....have fun. I'm going OUTSIDE!
  11. Any sign of morels yet in southern NY?
  12. They look great....Love the gator eyeing his next meal in the second pic
  13. Wow...there must be more in tha honey hole! Nice set!
  14. Agreed Early and yet how do you to after "bad guys" who simply snap. People, many, many people are wound pretty damn tight these days and little is being done to seek them out and offer the proper assistance/precautions. It's a hell of a lot easier to give the masses bogus laws against guns (looking good to the voters keeps my job!) than relieve stressed people of their worry which is pushing them over the edge. Real solutions are hard to find when the issues are so varied. Pretty scary time if you ask me.
  15. Is that a dog is the 2nd pic(back left). Just wondering?
  16. Nice find! I hope April is better for you.

    Dogs/Deer

I have a Brittany that loves to chase all game but he learned quite quickly via shock collar that deer are off limits. Yet I know a woman at work who tells stories of her Brittany killing fawns regularly in her neighborhood. It's rarely the dog that is the problem-it's the owner!
  18. Not my business Belo, but shooting illegally next door to me is not something I would "leave well enough alone" with.
  19. Yikes....I'm planting impatiens today in wifey's flower boxes.
  20. Fun "fuel for the fire"...If only crossbow hunters had their own season,(preferably at the expense of bow hunters) this would never have happened...damn you NYBOWHUNTERS! Lol... Seriously, suck door that little grl...cant fix stupid or sick in the head.
  21. The fact that I live in the 'burbs is part of my biggest issue in dealing with the introduction of my kids to firearms. I just can't set up a range on my property wth neighbors All around. No legal woods to allow them to walk around and have some fun.
