It doesn't make sense. I think the lack of DMP's is probably the main reason the Catskills are becoming a ghost town hunting-wise compared to what it used to be. And antler restrictions were the final death blow in my opinion. Why the hell should someone put in the time, energy, money, etc. required to hunt deer when in the end you'll have to pass just about every deer you'll get to see? I know when I hunt my goal is to put something on the ground. If I just want the fresh air, I could get it throughout the rest of the year and don't need to buy a hunting license for it.

Well, if the DEC will only issue a small number of DMP's in the Catskills and limit the legal take even more by implementing antler restrictions, then hunters won't be very enthusiastic about going out to hunt and possibly kill some coyotes while out deer hunting. Let's face it. Not many hunters will be going out specifically for coyotes, and with the dwindling hunter numbers in the Catskills I can see awful few being taken. So, this is probably more of a man made problem then a coyote problem.

Yes, as a landowner of 50 acres, I think he'd be able to get a DMP there. For those who own less or don't own at all, they will not have an easy time getting a tag. Years ago the Catskills were so much more heavily hunted and people were able to get DMP's. These days there isn't a fraction of the hunters like there once was, yet DMP's are slim pickings.

I hunted 4P for over 20 years until 2013 when I lost the private land I had access to. Doe permits are very difficult to get for a number of years now in this unit and then you throw in the antler restrictions that are in effect there, you find yourself with not much to legally hunt. Being mainly a gun and meat hunter I'd have little desire to hunt there again even if given the opportunity.

Heck, I've seen BB's bounce off squirrels, I don't think they will get the job done on a skunk.

Reminds me of the time I passed a public land parking spot during gun season and several deer were sniffing the bumpers of the cars parked there while the hunters were probably seeing nothing in the woods. LOL I've always been wary of those stories telling you to go deep on public land. Most places don't get that much pressure anymore to send to deer heading for the hills. They will stay closer to food sources which in most cases will be closer to roads.

All I have to say is that you shouldn't for a minute think it will be a slam dunk. Especially since you will be doing a DIY hunt.

I cringe whenever I see a vehicle with "Cherokee" written on it. Bad memories from a 1977 Cherokee Chief that one of my favorite uncles owned. American Motors used to make them back then. His looked exactly like the one pictured. Biggest piece of junk that was ever let out on the road. It was the vehicle that we took hunting back then, when it wasn't in the shop being repaired of course. LOL

I am a firm believer that a hunter should butcher the animals they kill themselves. I am amazed how many hunters out there have hunted for years and yet never butchered one themselves. Many don't even know how. Makes no sense to me. You don't need a garage or a basement to process one either. Quarter it hanging from any tree at your hunting spot or anywhere else or even while on the ground and then you can do the rest on your kitchen table. Takes a bit of time, but so what? At least you are doing it all from "Field to Fork" which is the way it should be.

And it's not like we don't live in a lawsuit happy society. Doesn't mean they will win the lawsuit, but anyone can sue.

I've learned in life that if I don't do something myself it won't get done. Depending on government, friends, even wives and kids may disappoint you. At least the website has the regs. I just printed the damned thing out and I'm done with it. Don't have to waste my time waiting on anyone.

Say what you want about Subaru's. Driving one got me sole access to 1200 acres of land from a farmer who has 3 lesbian daughters. Driving up to his house in one made quite an impression.

Well, they have the right to hunt and/or post on this forum just like anyone else. I need not know or be told that someone has such a preference. I can respect anyone, they just need to keep such matters to themselves and not be telling me about it 24/7. Then they will start losing me for sure.
