  1. My mother in law wacked a spike with her saab in Connecticut. She did better this year than I did.
  2. The guide was with me for the whole 6 day season.Look at the "Out of NY hunting"section under lottery success for the whole story and picture.I shot a big cow on day 3.Two seasons ago,This guide put a client on to a nice bull 20 min. into opening day.He still gets the paid the full amount. On another note, weather your using a guide or DIY,Some zones, like mine in zone C in north central VT is very mountainous. We found the Moose at a higher elevation,Which meant we hiked about 3 miles a day up and over hilly terrain.I.E.,Not for the average couch potato.
  3. In VT,Application was $25.When I drew a tag it was $350 for the non-resident hunting license. My guide, which is not mandatory in VT,charged $3000.He scouted the zone the week leading up to opening day, removed the moose from the woods, handled all butchering.I have a place in VT,so I didnt have to spend money on a hotel,But add in gas, tolls and a tip for the guide. If your going to hire a guide in Vt keep in mind there is not a lot of them,And the ones who are available book up quick after the drawing.I went with an established, reputable guide and not with a local guy who hires himself out on the side, which is cheaper. It's a once in a life time tag and I wanted a guide who would actually show up opening morning and not be hung over.
  4. Generally,You pay the non-resident application fee,Then if your selected,Your required to pay for a non-resident hunting license.Most application fee's are anywhere from $15 to $25.
  5. VT,Maine,N.H. & New Brunswick all done online via their respective web sites.Lottery applications usually opens in January with the drawings held in July.
  6. Well I ended my rifle season today with a fat buck tag still unused.Saw nothing today, nada.Colder temps,a few inches of snow,Should have been a good day,Nothing.5 full days and only 3 does to show for it,And that was opening day.My buddy hunting the other end of the property today, saw one small spike,Which he nearly mistook for a doe.The numbers are clearly down from last year,I suspect a big winter die off.
  7. No one was more shocked than me when I hit in VT last july.2600 non residents competing for 45 tags. The odds are long but you never know.
  8. Ive been applying for 9 years before i drew a tag.I choose the wmu's by the success rate.Start in the Northeast kingdom and work your way down south.I drew my 4th choice in zone G.In the end it was a good pick,Its near the canandian border has a decent number of moose in the zone and it only had 35 tags allocated for it,Unlike the zones in the northeastern part of the state which has a huge number of moose but your also competeing with 60 or 70 other hunters who also drew in the zone. Its a trade off.
  9. Success rate in VT is about 50-60 %.As a non resident,it's hard to take time off and drive up there to scout prior to the season.I hired a guide who did the scouting and had the rsponsability get a 700 lb animal off the mountain. In the end he was worth every penny.
  10. Ive been applying in VT,NH and Maine for 9 years.Drew a a tag in Vt this past Oct,See the out of ny hunting-Lottery success,For my story and photos. The applicataion period opens in January done via their web site's.My advice is if you draw a tag get on the phone the next morning and book an outfitter quick ,as they will book up fast.Good luck.
  11. Great Buck,Where was he taken?
  12. Same story here,The road im on,that I know of, had two 8ptrs and a 7 seven taken.Action all around us.Im heading back up tomorrow for the day,Hope the weather holds out.
  13. The best I could do on opening day was a doe.Saw 3 does at 9:50,Took one to fill out that tag,Stayed in stand all day and that was it,no other movement.but all around me it sounded like the battle of Gettysburg.Sunday was dead as a doornail,Saw no deer all day,Yet shots fired on the neighboring properties.Try again during the week.
  14. Extended forcast has saturday down for partly sunny and temps in the upper 40's.Looking good for the opener.
  15. Good luck in Vermont Jimmy,Have you hunted deer in Vermont before? Not exactly the best state to hunt deer,Surprisingly. The outfitter I used for my Vermont moose hunt gets calls from non-residents all the time and He told me he has to be straight up with them,He's happy to take their money,But the odds of even seeing deer is slim. What part of the state will you be hunting?.
  16. Had the chance to put in a full day on stand.Spooked one walking in at sunrise.Found a new rub next to my tree,so that was promising.Saw nothing all day.Walking out at sunset, jumped 3 different deer who were still in their beds at sunset,Hence why nothing was moving all day.Guess it was the warm weather.
  17. 168 gr nosler.2 shots were enough, the 3rd just finnished her off quicker. When we butchered her up,we looked at the shoulder blade and found the first 2 shots an inch and a half apart. Those balistic tips explode inside of them like dynamite.
  18. Just got back from the butcher who turned 30lbs of moose steaks and stew meat into sausages, and ravioli's.Let the feasting begin.
  19. $25 to apply for non residents.
  20. Update on the 2011 Vermont moose take.Of 455 tags issued,231 Moose were reported as of Oct 25.That's just aound the 50% success rate.
  21. Was on stand today from 6:30 to 9:30,Got chased off by the rain.Saw nothing this morning.
  22. I named my 7 pointer from last year, lisa after my girlfriend from high school..............She had a big rack also
  23. We can check with the DEC to see if it was checked in at Ridge,Thats the first place I would go if I took a deer of this size.BTW,what is the nys record deer anyway, rifle or bow?
