Long range forecast for opening day, sunny 51 deg.

I prefer a Claymore anti personal mine,It gets the point across.

No blood on the broad head and the deer looks healthy like it has no problem eating..Im claiming shenanigans,I don't believe the picture is real.

Finally had a good sit on sunday. Had 3 does walk in after sunrise but were very skittish due to the strong winds,It seemed danger lurked behind every swaying tree. A small buck walk in and when he crossed the trail I walked in on he stopped,Sniffed the trail and quickly trotted off.I suspect he caught wind of my boot prints on the leaves. 3 minutes later a nice 8 walks down that same trail and hangs up,I grunt and bleat for several minutes,His tail starts to wag like an excited dog and then he charges in to within 12 yards,But at a bad angle to my right. No shot was offered and he quickly walked off looking for the guy who kept annoying him. Oh so close.

I had that happen as I was about to shoot a bear once, he froze up for a minute trying to figure out what that faint noise was. After I quietly mouthed a few expletives saying how I was going to kill the wife if that's her calling,he moved to an opening and I got him. Turns out it was a wrong number!

The poor guy is going to drag that around until he sheds this winter.

Even the farm raised deer in 3H don't get that big.

That's why I like to ask, math has never been my strong point

If you can get into that thick stuff well before daylight,Then its a good plan. I believe when the pressures on the best place to be is the thickest nastiest brush You can find,Climb 20 feet up and watch them sneak back into it.

Same here last week,I saw legal bucks on the side of the road 5 minutes from my property at 5am and about 40 does driving out at sunset,Almost hit a few with the car,They would'nt move out of the road. But during the day ,nothing.
-
I will hit the woods Tuesday for another sit,Temps a bit cooler than last week and this coming weekend temps will drop below freezing at night. I hope they start moving a little deeper in the woods and away from the edges.
-
I live 5 minutes away from there and thats the first I've heard of that.Several years ago the state brought in "Snipers" in a controlled hunt to thin the herd and that caused a small controversy. The deer herd in western suffolk/eastern nassau is growing,Its going to get interesting in the comeing years to see how they deal with this situation.

Hang in there,Ive spent 2 full days in stand and have only seen 2 does myself.Keep the faith.

Poor guy has to wait until he sheds to lose the ball...Or gets taken during the season.

10 hours on stand and not a single deer sighted on Friday, watched 2 grouse make a heck of a racket. Typical early oct , all the deer are on the edges and when I drove through town to leave I saw tons of them standing on front lawns, one was actually bedded on a lawn 15 feet from their front porch!
