  1. I use red more then white. You retain night vision. Blue helps with blood, makes it stand out. Petzl with a usb rechargable is a current favorite; but a bit low on lumens. Black Diamond with 4 aaaa's has a really good run time on standard batteries, good output, and pretty good on rechargable Energizers, 2nd favorite. Have a couple box stores in the tool box, but they lack for decent features, but cheap.
  2. Outfitter I have used has a guide working for him that was hunting real thick stuff with bow hunter. Client nocked an arrow in case of a quick shot. Tripped on root and sunk the broad head right to the bone in the guides thigh. Boy that’s gotta hurt.
  3. I live fairly close to some good rattlesnake habitat. Its a real thrill to hike and spot one. Have a couple thick black snakes in my firewood stacks, found a shed skin thats just enormous the other day when moving some wood for the winter.
  4. Never going to stuff this genie back in a bottle; its too good of a campaign slogan to be tough on guns, fits the current narrative.
  5. There is a better read for what parts being challenged on Syracuse.com website. https://www.syracuse.com/crime/2022/10/key-parts-of-nys-new-gun-law-struck-down-by-federal-judge-in-syracuse.html
  6. Hot dogs are a PIA to make unless you have time. But grinding and making fresh sausage is stupid easy and doesn’t require a huge investment. Even if you don’t case, and just make patties to cook. Had a small local guy who would hang and you’d get your own deer back. I only used him once when I was busy with a new job. But he helped me out with butchering my first pigs so I had a look behind the scenes and he was honest.
  7. Have to admit, I didn't see that coming. Now there's a man with a plan.
  8. Maryann But Im gonna trip you up.....boxer-briefs, best combination going.
  9. Larry knows how to start a topic, you don’t get 18K+ posts without some effort. Jif or Peter Pan, smooth.
  10. I have a caribou pedestal mount with the artificial. Its nice, not exactly like real, but gives a good impression. Its more monochrome, but I think a taxidermist maybe better then the one I used at the time could airbrush in a little more color. Been durable, geeze I can’t believe that mount is near 20 years old; that was a bunch of hunts ago.
  11. I think folks forget just how easy NY State is for tags and places to hunt even compared to others in the US.
  12. If you call DEC in Albany they transfer you to records and if you know the name of the town and approx year, DEC will send you a new certificate. I don’t know how far back they can do easily, but I had it in less then a week. Mine was late 80’s.
  13. That’s not an entirely accurate. The “environmental protection fund” pays for all the big public NY State purchases from say Open space institute. OSI often acts as initial purchaser to clean up lawsuits/taxes/deed claims/etc before selling to state. EPF is funded by real estate transactions for the most part. Those tend to be where the hikers are interested. Smaller buys adding onto WMA or MUA sometimes come out of Pittman Robertson funds. I have a popular hunting season MUA by me within walking distance; easy access, stocked birds, occasional deer. In 34 years of walking that land I have never once seen another hiker off season(800 acres) NY doesn’t even use all the P-R funds that are available. They have certain guidelines and NY never has enough projects that fit the allocated funds…..ever see a target range on NY state land? But other states build ranges with the funds, really nice ones too! One year recent it was like 15 mil out of 25 mil. combined with Dingell-Johnson fishing fund thats the same tax on anglers.IIRC (i’d have to find the article) P-R funds are used for safety and hunter ed draws out of it, hence ranges are also part of the safety end as my example. The dynamic is changing; now DEC has started limited access to spots and an associated fee( Peekamoose in Catskills) and they re going to do more in the High Peaks (already restricting vehicle numbers in places) The Whites in NH charge a fee, that would be a good pattern. This can be a careful what you wish for scenario for hunters that always think the paltry license fees DEC collects from hunting and fishing means anything. Its roughly 43 million and DEC budget is 6 BILLION a year. If you charge a fee, other outdoor groups are going to want a bigger say, because now you’ve given them a stake and place at the table.
  14. Good luck with the dogs, this is always a good thread.
  15. Fixed price red stag in Romania; $3450. Current by a very good outfitter. With the Euro being down to the US dollar thats a pretty good price; with airfare via Iceland, about the same as an elk guided out west. Most European hunts get expensive because its usually a sliding scale on trophy fees base on weight of skull and antlers or horn length in addition to day rate. But with many US hunters they’ll offer a fixed price for a trophy fee for several outfits/agents. And no you can’t bring back meat (you can bring Red Deer from New Zealand, that would be interesting adventure in and of itself), and shipping and associated fees like vet certificate/shipping/etc to import trophy are additional in some cases. Sometimes you can bring back in luggage, but thats dependent on country and export permits. If you poke around there are some good deals for an experience on Scottish hill stag, Roe deer and Fallow in several places. Ibex and Chamois get kinda pricey depending on sub species and country. Management hunting can be a way to keep costs down. Driven Boar is a hoot, the whole deal is an event. Highly recommended Hunting international isn’t exactly cheap, but it offers interesting experiences for different game in different environments. More often then not they can be multi species/ multi animal so if you are successful, you keep hunting for the term of the hunt.
  16. Just poking at his cage cause I think its silly. Although pigs will eat anything, and rooting around eating carrion can infect them. Avoid dog too, they get it…..
  17. That bear been eating in a sweet corn field; should be some good eats. You eat pork? Anything free range can have tric. too. Bear are deceptively heavy for size.
  18. Cabelas has the winchester 777 209 primers in stock right now, you have to pay additional $22 hazmat and $17/100ct. I have 2- 100ct Federal 209A if anyone wants to trade for Federal 215 Magnum large rifle primers.
  19. oh my, thats different be interesting how that shoots with head off the stock hope its not a hard kicker
  20. 454 at eurooptic right now, huron series. I have a couple year old Accupoint on a 30 06. Glass is good, sxs to a zeiss conquest, leupold 3 series(older and newer) all about the same. Have to spend a bunch more to see some performance upgrade. I'd buy another.
  21. This thread has almost reached the point of being 24 Hr Campfire Forum worthy. Those who know, know.
  22. Honest, although there is some quilting going on at the butt; that flat sawn grain peaking out at the wrist end ain’t nothing all that special on the cheek side. That might be Marlins idea of nice wood, but its just so-so. And then I’d want to see the rest of it butt to fore end anyway.
  23. That’d knock a few bucks off the price for me. Pretty easy to fix oiled walnut stock like that and fill those upholstery tack holes. Seen much worse.
  24. The problem is a rookie mistake putting the shiny side in versus out. Happens all the time. Then theres the issue of name brand vs store brand. Them store brands have chinese microchips in them, and the name brands cia/nsa chips. Pick your poison. So you really have to make your own.
