  1. We would find much in agreement on that topic. Major pet peeve of mine <<pun intended.
  2. Would it surprise you to learn that all the trail building and maintenance for the Catskills and Adirondacks is done by volunteer crews and paid crews from NGO's like ADK and 46ers ? All the State does is drop material if required and coordinate through DEC Forest Ranger division. For example cutting 20 mile trail this spring; via the 46er's work party "May 4-11: We will be working from Duck Hole to Newcomb. Requirements: Crew size is limited. Must be in excellent physical condition and health. You may be required to carry up to 50 pounds of gear for up to 20 miles. We will be staying in the wilderness, and you must have proper equipment and food for the entire stay. We will work long hours and the work will be very hard. Still interested? More details to follow as the time gets closer." One of the fears if you charge a fee to hikers/nature folks is now they get a bigger say at the table then they already have and there are more of them then hunters/fisherman. Just one of those thing to think about. White Mountains of New Hampshire require a fee for some areas but through USDA-FS...... https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/whitemountain/passes-permits/recreation/?cid=stelprdb5187652
  3. You're not even close. Look at the numbers in the High Peaks area alone and they are having serious problems with over use. Heres just a sample or registered 46ers http://www.adk46er.org/pdf/Roster_Statistics-as-of-3-7-2018.pdf Through the 90's and early 2000's there were around 200 a year.......last 3 years over 500, 700, 700 for EACH year. I'm in a bird club that had around 25-30 active members; now its easy over 100 in last couple years. Had to find a new place to meet. On the moral deal..... I tell you I'm going to shoot a deer and feed a family; most folks would have no issue, even those on the fence over hunting. Say I'm going to kill an elephant and even though I fed 200 , there are plenty of even hunters who take a different moral attitude.
  4. Check this out; http://clamlakewi.com/elk-info/ Can you imagine NY DEC clear cutting 6300 acres of anything to help out a species? In this case Elk and turkey. Trim a branch here and get a ticket. We can't even get a matching grant program going and give back most of the Pittman-Robertson money allocated to NY.
  5. To be fair, many on the northern counties of Wisconsin are considered CWD free including all the ones around the hunt area, south central is their hot bed of cases. But point taken and I've looked at both sides.
  6. Wisconsin been working on an Elk herd for 23 years and got themselves a first ever hunt established; https://www.jsonline.com/story/sports/columnists/paul-smith/2018/03/13/smith-wisconsin-dnr-hold-inaugural-elk-hunt-2018/421310002/
  7. Thought this was interesting. https://www.npr.org/2018/03/20/593001800/decline-in-hunters-threatens-how-u-s-pays-for-conservation
  8. I was poking around for something similar, except not worried about filling a cooler myself. Inexpensive means a party boat out of Jersey. They park on top off structure and fish. Seem to do pretty good on catching in general. I'm not that sociable frankly so I elected for a private charter which costs more, but I get a captain, mate and a 32' boat at my disposal for the day and its cheaper than many of the hunts I've done so its cost is relative. Maybe you can hook up with someone going out of Long Island? That seems popular with folks from up here in the Hudson Valley.
  9. On the same note I'd like to see Eric Clapton's gun room. He is supposed to have of the largest fine shotgun collections in the world.
  10. "You don't need a flame thrower to kill a deer." A Cuomo Wonder if he kept one of those "Planet of the Apes" rifles?
  11. FWIW I have my safes(Liberty) in a concrete block reinforced "closet" with a fire rated door that was built after safes were installed. (Yes, I'll have to sell that as part of the building or do the demo to remove them). I have a enough room for door swing on the side. That adds to fire protection (what I'm mostly concerned about) and it limits access to just the front square on which limits working room for a thief. Most of these videos show guys with bars and they need swing room for leverage. I'm just trying to slow a thief down as most wouldn't spend a day cutting and grinding with alarm going off. I carry separate insurance from homeowners as I don't even want them knowing what I have and its through SCI, SAIA. Covers all the odds and ends like scopes, binocs, slings etc. They also taxidermy as another service. Eastern Insurance is another popular gun insurance company.
  12. I just looked into booking a salt water charter out of Providence, and as the regs go on Big Eye tuna and all that, the guy I am fishing with has the client getting 30% of the sale price. Other tuna you keep as the fisherman under the appropriate regs and such, just like tarheel says. I'm not a fan so of tuna raw, cooked,or canned; so we're targeting other species. Never done much salt, so anxious to try it out.
  13. I think your congressman could just give you lip service maybe get a chuckle; this is a State issue, not Federal. You want your State Assemblyman, State Senator(Gillibrand and Schumer won't care they're Feds) and the folks already listed in this thread. There is a finder right on State website for your State reps.
  14. I was doing pretty well, not any more. Didn't see that coming.
  15. I'd get a 357 mag and 6" barrel and a nice chest rig and go have fun. Can shoot 38 special to plink as a bonus for fun.
  16. What were the odds back when that was filmed that two of the actors would go on to be Governors?
  17. This could be as good as the 223 thread......
  18. No. I have a 28 ga barrel with full adjustable sights made for slugs. Always wanted to go down south where there are fewer restrictions and take a deer with it as I have used 12,16,20 in NY
  19. Last time I ordered 28ga slugs was from Able in Texas and had them delivered to a friend out of state and he shipped them to me. Brenneke 2 3/4" in a full choke smooth bore. Very accurate.
  20. Interesting enough many game departments outside the US class legal firearms by energy for what size game is legal to take with them.......one of the reasons a 375HH is the legal minimum for dangerous game although a 9.3x62 or 9.3x74R are splitting hairs and usually allowed. On another note I hit an impala(whitetail mature doe size) at 40 yds with a borrowed 470 NE double rifle and a solid and I don't think it could have been any more dead.......right in heart, bang flop.
  21. I don't think I have ever hunted private property where I didn't cut a set of tracks that shouldn't be there.
  22. Ehh, 3 month numbers don't mean much either, basically its been flat at 1%
