  1. So the other weekend I was up to camp getting some prep work done, and made sure the logs from the tree I cut up were out of any mud. It fell right accrost the path, while that's all clear now I started thinking about all the free (- the work) firewood I don't have to bring up. Would be enough to fill the back of the Jeep twice over. Only bad part is it's pine. It was down over the winter, if I let it season up for next year it should be ok. Usuall routine is I have a tree or two's worth cut up in my back-yard and bring it up in the u/t as I need it or so. Got an electric chainsaw so I don't disturb the neighbors and a sludge & wedge makes for a good workout. No, I don't live next to the woods but I watch for ads in craigslist for people getting rid of a tree they had cut or spot one cut down while driving around. Never fails, can't remember the last time I actually bought firewood. Of course you need some room - an area to store / cycle the wood but it's realy not that bad.
  2. I can see retail outlets taking a hit because we can shop for tons of things online not having to drive. My Jeep kept well tuned should get 18mpg but with this ethenol crap probably what 15-16. Trying to get into the habit of hitting needed stores in one run or after work. Sounds easy enough but convenience runs are something of an old habit. Times like these I kinda miss my 30mpg topaz.
  3. While you were in Va. did you get a chance to take in a movie?
  4. usually get good results with some kind of intruder jake in the mix.
  5. If you can get 30 yards from a roosted bird, you got ninja skills.
  6. It must take him all day to mow that yard.
  7. Greetings; welcome to the forum. See a few wingbone calls in that pic, I never got the hang of those. Mouth calls, box & slate is my usuall game. Good hunting.
  8. Took advantage of some sales at harbor frieght and picked up the 15w panel. Noticed they had a 30$ charge regulator that looks like it was designed for single panels. On my way home I thought "%@#&^ that would be better then nothing battery protection." Oh well maybe next trip there.
  9. Fantail

    NJ Bear

Nice, hope they turn out to your liking.
  10. I need to break in a new plot (NZ), heard good things about Buckwheat or Chickory for the job. So I am interested in regrowth from browse, good time to plant for the plot lasting into Oct., and if it should be a loner plot or a mix.
  11. Well if the ph meter wasn't off it's meds then I'm suprised. Plot 1 (last year grew oats) avg is 6.5 (6.0 - 7.0) Plot 2 old logging trail 6.5 Plot 3 (new) avg 6.5 - 7.0 I thought this can't be right, so I double back and re sampled the same area's - duplicate readings. Checked my back yard again - steady 6.5 What kills me is the new section hasn't been tended to in 3-4 years, I need to till it all back up but I had thought the ph would be way low. Btw good light meter readings unless you thumb the solar chip and the moisture was average. How the heck is ph higher in a woodland plot? Granted the meter isn't scientific lab readings. Anyhow if I lowball the readings, should I still apply lime before I till and fertilize?
  12. This guy has it made, I mean maybe he can't own weapons. So, get the deer so tame, then lure one into small pen nice and petting like. Then take a double sided knife and slit it's throught. Heck of a way to keep the freezer stocked but it might work.
  13. There was a deli near my neighborhood that used to make just about any special order sandwitch. One of my favorites was liverwurst with horseradish & onions.
  14. screamon demon; It's awsome calling one in for your kid! I did a fan/pic mount with my son's first bird. Wasn't so long ago there was alot more youth restrictions. Nowadays I have some grandkids your kids age - hope I can still get out and call for them someday, or remember how .
  15. I think venison fat is plain nasty. As much as possible is cut out. Then there is alot ground up. So I use that in spaghetti sauces, chilli-mac or stuff like lasagnia. But I have taken to a 1/4-1/3 ground pork & venison mix that works good for burgers. I often think about making sausage but like NYdeer said after I process a few deer I just want to be done.
  16. Frank's seems to be a good all around hot sauce. Good flavor, doesn't nuke your taste buds. erussell; good story bet that guy remembers that day.
  17. Just a note: So last week I placed a small order with Hilltop RV and it has arrived. They seem to be a decent source and ok to do business with.
  18. Interesting, was looking over the chicory info mainly. Source have anything on Buckwheat?
  19. Hmmm, I guess this is the time to rethink that goal then. White clover on it's own with it's ability for regrowth is sounding good. That would give me other options. Since I need to till up the new plot area anyway, I'm thinking retill the plot where I planted forge oats last year for the clover. And then maybe chicory or buckwheat in the new one. For the 3rd, an old logging trail plot was painfully tilled last year (lots of rocks) I hear ryegrass is a good option. Next step is next time I'm up to camp, is not to forget the Ph meter and test the soil. I mean all the chatter is great but I may wind up with more work spreading lime or need to start with something else this year. I should have test results to post and ask about in a few days. Thanks guys.
  20. So your intention was what then? "think they should put a size limit on food plots for them to be legal." Rubbish. That is a snobby thing for you to say. And it fails. If it makes you feel better that is just my opinion. Seems like you want sell capping something, the one thing we can do to attract wildlife - legaly. Oh realy? Who are you to say the rest of us shouldn't be able to turn an little peice of a logging trail or clearing into something productive? You feel it's baiting? Ok. Attracting wildlife to a grown food source regardless of size baits the animal. Deal with it. I see you like to quote and toss in 1/2 dozen questions to cloud the post, you know it doesn't change what you said. If you believe the elitist snob remark was a name directed solely to you then I appologise. It was directed to that statement you made, and not to be rude but to anyone who agrees with it. G-man; I can appriciate what you said in your last post and I think your knowledge of maintaining plots far out strips mine. I'd have to respect that. Still I think your definition of what a true food plot might be isn't so for the rest of us. Perhaps even if the resources were level. I think I would also agree with what steve posted.
  21. Hey guys, I was thinking about planting 2-3 crab apple trees near my stands in a small plot area, maybe with a few berry bushes near by to help attract deer. But wait!! That can't possibly feed the entire herd or even one deer with just that and my petty food plots. Gosh darn I must be baiting. I better not do it then, the elitist snobs here won't approve, awwww...
  22. Stretchhunts; your post fails of elitist snobbery. Leave it up to guys like you to take the one thing we can do in NY and try to stink it up because you don't like it. Oh look he's trying to preach us all about how much a deer can consume, and how I can't possibly imagine to feed the local herd with my petty food plots, awww gosh I must be trying to attract them repeatedly so I can hunt them later, awwww.... My next plot is about a 50 x 20 yard stretch. Get it? Got the perfect spot for a stand all picked out. I think I'll call it the-stretch in your honor.
