  1. Aw thanks guys & gals! Was a nice day Sent from my LGL44VL using Tapatalk
  2. Yes downstate usually gets their first morels earlier than upstate Sent from my LGL44VL using Tapatalk
  3. If conditions are perfect they will grow a bunch. This cool snap won't promote an awful lot of growth. I picked these last week. The morels in the second photo were picked 3 days after the other ones(from the same patch). As you can see they didn't grow much.
  4. They sure can be tricky to kill sometimes. I once lost a coyote after thumping it with 2 rounds of buckshot.
  5. Regional get togethers sound cool. I hear horseshoes and beer are great for toning your bow shooting muscles. Sorry x-bow shooters, looks like Tiddly Winks for you![emoji1] I'd be down for the fingerlakes region.
  6. Wow! That's a mount worthy bob.
  7. Are you hunting daytime or night? Bait/carcass piles can help keep them nearby for a few days. Carcasses should be wired down to a tree root or something otherwise they will just drag it into the brush where they feel more secure. If you give a description of your spot, I'd be happy to share some pointers.
  8. Zag, eastern coyotes have a large home range(20-50sq miles) so sometimes they just aren't there. I would recommend scouting with snow on the ground to see if they're still in the area. It doesn't take long to educate them especially with distress sounds.
  9. I get the humor, although I'm sure they're not calling the commander in chief by his first name.
  10. I should include that 99% of my predator hunting is done at night so I've seen little need for visual attractants. They could however prove useful on snow covered ground so I'll most likely add a foxjack for next season.
  11. There often becomes a dilemma when setting up too far from downwind cover. That is when they pop out downwind and don't feel safe enough to come any closer often forcing the hunter to take long shots. Lately I've found myself more often setting up toward the center of the field with the FoxPro speaker more crosswind and closer to cover. This'll way they'll try to approach from the side closer to the call. Each spot will require much forethought before even stepping out of the vehicle. Things like wind direction, snow cover, moon light, and even headlight glow from passing cars can influence where to set up. Proper stand selection is a big part of predator hunting and knowing how to adjust it accordingly takes time/experience to master.
  12. The number of coyotes that respond to your calls and go unseen will greatly outnumber the number of coyotes you'll actually see. It's just the way it is. Try to use blocking terrain to your advantage and stay still.
  13. I've had the same pfleuger President for 5 years and still going strong. With proper cleaning and care they will last. Hundreds of fish have fell to this reel
  14. Apparently some free range poultry owners also let domesticated turkeys roam around with the chickens. I just seen it 1st hand yesterday while driving. I wonder if the turkeys are used as "guard birds" of some sort?
  15. That's considered hunting? I'd consider that culling. Lol Imo even hunting behind hounds isn't really hunting. Maybe sporting, but not truly matching wits & tact with the animal. That's a debate for another thread though. Lol
  16. Thx for the info. I'm more interested in sort of a diy style. Just need a place to hunt them and maybe the outfitter to sort of point us in the good direction. I don't really care for hunting behind hounds and baiting predators(even local coyotes) is somewhat boring and rather unproductive. Hunting the hunters is what I'm all about. The thrill for me is knowing a potentially dangerous predator is coming in to my calls and quite frankly coyotes don't scare me at all.
  17. I remember seeing the mounts. I'd like to take my dad as well. Any advice is welcome
  18. Nice find! The "eyeballs" are puffballs and yes indeed you've found some sulphur shelf(chicken mushroom). I must say I'm jealous, especially since I've been down since Thursday with awful strep throat.
  19. A week in Canada hunting wolves and lynx
  20. You could shim the light slightly with felt or something. That's what I had to do, although my light is a fixed beam.
  21. A failing purge canister solenoid can cause a rough idle. As always when your mechanic is calling for drastic measures, I'd recommend getting a second opinion. Good luck
  22. Once they've responded to your calls they pretty much have your location pinpointed and they're gonna either circle to catch a scent or sneak in for a visual. So I'd say howl back a bit then go silent and keep your eyes peeled.
  23. Zag, I like to copy whatever they are doing like howling, yipping, challenge, etc. Once they get good and fired up at the presence of other intruder coyotes, they like to go silent on their approach. If it was daylight then I can almost guarantee that they circled to your downwind side.
  24. Now that's an idea! I'm all for reverting back to the Oct. 15 bow opener. I could also live with just 2 weeks of rifle followed by 2 weeks of muzzleloader
