  1. Sure can, We went from an abundance of rain from spring into summer. July came and it got dry in Steuben county. The ground was cracked when I over-seeded some Brassicas beginning of August. This is the reason i like to use no till methods. I use no till and cover crops, the dead decaying cover crops protect the soil from the sun in dryer conditions like this. And also helps hold whatever moisture is in the ground much longer than open/exposed/tilled soil. Every part of my plots that have a heavier dead duff layer on the soil surface have better growing plants.
  2. Its different for everyone as you mentioned. For me if I cant hold real tight groups at 20 and 30.. I am very upset with myself, as well as baseball sized groups out to 60 yards. IMO a rule of thumb I followed as a kid learning, was when groups began to get bigger than a softball, one should draw the limit there, and or learn to make them better. A softball is say half the size of the lungs in a deer, if a deer moves at the shot of an arrow any which way.. you never know what could happen...
  3. I don't think you'll have any issues at all. I shoot the hypos also, and use the G5 Montecs as a back up/small game head. I think both are great broadheads. shoot what your comfortable with, not what others are.
  4. I run up to 12 across 150 acres. Only a few in great spots. Others are just kind of out there lol Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  5. 2nd time shooting for the year tonight. Figured since I don't hardly have the time I'll just start long range... 50 yards, aiming between top two dots. I was satisfied no doubt. Next arrow I stepped back to 75 and released one arrow at the center of target.. went through the target and into dirt lol. At least I know the sights are still good Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  6. Move the camera, to a trail leading out or into that bedding location. Bumping does imo isn't as bad as bumping bucks, especially older bucks...
  7. They sure did, which I kind of expected. I should have not removed the "fake fence" until the beginning of September. But i got to carried away wanting to get buck pics. Id get a few deer in them here or there and the beans could hold there own. Soon as the "noise" was gone, every deer buck or doe and their families found them lol. I have 2 electric fences for next year now. Leave one plot for summer food and the others will be Winter food. they held up decent i think. especially for $36/bag.
  8. The first September i was legal to archery hunt, about 16 years ago. We were riding the quad up one of the dug roads where my father and his buddy wanted to hang a stand for me to solely sit. On the way there, The buck we called "Bullwinkle" let us drive up to and stop within 40 yards of and just gaze at him. He didnt give a crap, never ran or looked spooke done bit, put his head back into the shrubs and carried on, after several minutes he slowly began his trek up the hill. He let us do this two separate times that month and it didn't bother him a bit. 3 of us on a quad, whispering, we stayed on and never got off. and he again carried on.. The first week of November that year we were on the top of the hill in my dads truck as daylight began to break (Late start) he was dropping us off at each of our spots. I got out for my drop off and the truck left, i turned to my right and he stood there at no more than 10 yards just staring at me. lol i damn near shat myself. he didnt stick around after that. He must have thought it was just a farm truck, until it stopped in front of him for a few seconds and left, and there i was. He was the biggest buck I have ever layed eyes on and ive seen some dandy head gear.. I really think most all animals relate these things to some sort of farm equipment(in farmed areas anyways) and dont mind them much. Unless they had a bad encounter or been chased or something... until then i think they let them be. Again my quad stays in the barn unless needed, i wont chance alerting or bumping a good buck
  9. I agree, I think as long as they dont see someone get off it that they can relate to "danger" .. They see it as a farm equipment. And check it out somewhat.
  10. A little bit on a small 1/2 acre soybean plot i planted.. Planted June, 3rd. My homemade Deer Repellent of Irish spring soap hung 24" off the ground and Pie tins double hung to clash together in the breeze. This let the beans get to as tall as they are in the First pic, I pulled the stuff down a week or two before that picture was taken. 2nd picture taken a month later. This half of the plot did the best and id say for a month time of not being "protected" they did well... Not much left of them now.. lol. They have gotten a ton of attention since.. all day long everyday. This plot is only 40 yards from my camp. My over-seeding of DeerAg brassicas 8/7 didn't take to well due to such dry ground and lack of following rains, even though we got a 1/4" of rain the night i seeded, they didnt do anything. The tree standing in the last picture behind the doe will have a branch off an apple tree they chew and rub on attached for a mock scrape set up.... soon lol
  11. It is an addiction, welcome to the club! lol. I have one of my plots(My MurderPlot) planned for next year already, due to its over browsing this year. There isn't much left, besides the thin brassicas, clovers, chicory and WW coming up, but I doubt they will make much use out of it. Land owner gave me permission to expand it another acre next year, so i plan to have a big combo of screening/summer blend planted on the outside and towards the center to break it up (probably 1/2-3/4 acre) mainly to keep them secure and the inside of it hopefully will be the chicory clovers and alfalfa blend i seeded in August. If its thin i will mix in some brassicas as well.. I love planning, I just hate waiting! lol
  12. Tough to say but I guess out of velvet. Beauty of a buck. 4.5yr+
  13. We will use our quads on and off throughout the summer and it doesnt bother them much. Every deer is different and typically the bigger boys wont tolerate them. But as season nears i keep them to the field edges and do not go into the woods with them. As deer season opens, i only use them to either drag a deer out with. I made this mistake years ago when i got a new quad and rode it a lot before and during season, ... That deer season sucked! If you r not chasing more mature animals, and dont care what goes on your tag. Go ahead and ride. If pursuing a more mature animal.. Id stay of them. My .02$ Though i have walked back to my quad after several sits years back, only to find a good buck with does within archery range of the quad parked on a trail. But i think the rut played into affect there..
  14. Have a couple stands I would like to get hung this coming week. Only shot the bow once so far, need my license and wash my clothed a time or two. Always running later Sent from my SM-G920V using Tapatalk
  15. I did not, Wasn't aware of this. Thought it was sent out randomly.
  16. I have never received one. Though this year i plan on making my own personal log. For sightings, weather conditions and wind directions etc.. I said this last year too so hopefully I will hold true to my word lol.
  17. Just read a newly produced article for the Old Farmers Almanac stating we will have a wet and mild Winter this year. Above average temps and above average pprecipitation.
  18. I have the Hornady SST 139gr rounds. Hve only shot the gun enough to be sighted in with them at 100yrds. So i cant speak too much for them but they shot well so far. But I've seen the damage these rounds can cause on a whitetail in this caliber out of friends guns
  19. I agree Chris, With the cooler then normal Summer temps we have had this year. My brassica plots, as well as my neighbors getting completely annihilated this early isn't the norm. They typically wouldn't even touch them until End of October at the Earliest. Maybe its because the little bit of AG is not around this year like it normally is. Not sure. I wouldn't mind snow, just bummed my winter plots are nearly gone already and its not even fall yet lol.
  20. I have never been a fan of hunting related tats, Probably cause I haven't seen many that I like.. I like very realistic art. And most dont meet my criteria. But when my Dad passed I wanted a tattoo in his honor and memory, Since the 2 others tats I have are my 2 childrens names down the inside of each forearm. Even though Dad is always with me still, now he physically is. So I designed this tat based from what we both enjoyed the most.. Hunting and THE RED, WHITE and BLUE.. I like it so far, and its only a start. I'm Going to put some stuff in for my grandfather as well since he and my father were my absolute favorites. Also add some more goodies around and through it... Someday lol.... I just hate spending money on a tat when i can buy a trail cam or a gun or anything for that matter. Luckily for me all 3 of my tats were gifts from my wife!
  21. Which one do you put on? I have a buddy who is in on the Greater Rochester Club.
  22. Ill start by saying hunting over bait is not my cup of tea. I dont mind who does it and who doesn't do it. I do believe it takes the "fair chase" and "REAL Thrill" or maybe even "skill" out of a hunt. But if you ask me, a set of rattling antlers, a grunt tube, deer piss or a doe bleat makes the hunt NOT 100% Fair chase... Im not against calling cause i do a little of it each season, but its not 100% fair chase IMO. They are "tools" or different types of "lures". Everyone is different, and hunts for different reasons. Im sure Bait can be used as an effective management tool for any game but, I just don't think i could bait a deer .. or bear under my current hunting practices. As stated earlier, As hunters we need to stick with eachother.. Im not a X-BOW fan, but im not against them either. I do not like the fact of a bow being on a stock like a gun and fired with a trigger like a gun, but I wont let it ruin my archery hunts.. I think we all need to just be alright with some sort of change.. Change is always going to happen one way or another... whether we like it or not..
  23. Love getting the Quality whitetails magazines! Hopefully I will make the banquet this year!
  24. I used these when they first came out, they worked decent. To get them to shut off you have to slowly turn them one direction then back slowly again and find that "sweet spot" .. kind of a pain with certain shafts plus you had to shim them if the inside diameter of the arrow was off slightly. I have since switched to Tracers ( 6 years old and still flawless) .. and nockturnals as backups. One of the best investments I ever made!! Even when we think we totally smoked a deer, our eyes and deer body positions can play tricks on us, a shot that looked like smokin double lung, could easily be a single lung liver ... So i use lighted knocks no doubt. I'll take any advantage i can to see the arrows path and where it is located when it hits ... or misses easier lol
