Anyone know of any good brand Late Season/holding apple or pear trees, or any other good late season soft mass I could plant? I have quite a bit of early season Apples, crab apples and few pears. They start dropping in Septemeber, But they are about depleted now.. only a few apples left on the trees. Just trying to offer a variety and keep them on my property even more.. Also where i could maybe purchase them and not pay an arm and a leg. Please and Thanks.

The Montecs are my favorite fixed blade for that reason! I have done the same in years pass. I have put both Rage and Montec through shoulders with out an issue.... yet. For me since they perform near the same, I stick with the bigger cutting heads like the hypos. Always had pass through unless shoulders were hit, then it varied. Have been able to use both numerous times for harvests. IMO both easy good reliable heads. Also, Core, what is 5 or 10$ if it makes or breaks a hunt? or should I say, makes or breaks a harvest or 2 per season, or more?

The shoulders are tough regardless of the broadhead used. Asking for a broadhead to hold up after striking a solid mature buck in the shoulder is asking for a lot IMO. I know its not intentional but shoulders are tough, and we are only using sticks and strings to try and pierce them. Im sure its possible. But if it were me, I would shoot the head your most confident with "(regardless of shoulder hits)" and maybe just aim a few inches further back instead, if its a concern. If you liver hit a deer, its dead, just let it lay 6+ hours to be safe. If you shoulder hit a deer, well we know.. I know its not ideal, but after losing 2 big bucks to shoulder hits, I aim for the middle/rear of the lungs just to avoid the shoulder, esp on further shots. Dead deer every time. More lungs on one side and liver on the other for room if error. G5 Dead Meats, just watched a video from the 2017 ATA Show, they state that they are not considered barbed. But some reviews of these broadheads state them not opening just like people think with the Rages.

Mine doesnt look promising either! Between no baby sitters, and my wifes very busy work schedule, and my grandmother coming in from S.C. to see the newborns and have early Thanksgiving.. im not impressed.. lol

No idea, a doe can bring him back if hes not a local buck. lots of things can happen whether you see or don't see him again.. but the time of year is in your favor. especially if you have the does.

Hard to tell anything in the pic, but i think i see more than 4 points on that rack. Kind of can make out brow tines, and a g2 where you think there isnt one.. I would also guess more like a 3.5yr old..

Ive only taken 1 deer with a rifle, 30-06 with 165gr core lokts. Hit was back in liver/guts.. Both small holes in/out. Blood trail was good IMO for where the entrance and exit holes were. But with my ML I shoot 250gr shockwaves polymer tipped .. they leave small holes in, and small holes exiting.. Therefore blood trails are pretty minimal. Unless hit lower in the chest cavity. It definitely depends on the location of the hit, and the type of bullet used. They are nothing compared to slinging a rifled slug through a rib cage of a whitetail. Sticking with the ML and probably the 45-70 this year.

Thanks everyone, I received a call from my neighbor after dark last night. She had a dance with him yesterday evening as well. Chasing a doe through with 2 other bucks. I guess luckily for me, she missed him too. She also stated she watched him pushing around a group of 20 or so does/fawns shortly after dark a few days earlier.. So he is definitely active day and night, I just need to find time to get back out there.

It seems almost every deer Ive taken down there over the years is just loaded with ticks!

So Friday I had enough time to slip into a stand for only the 3rd time this season. Life has been so busy raising 3 young kids, mom and dad working 2 more than full time jobs, trying to expand our careers etc.. But I recently got some daytime, and some just after dark photos of my #1 buck. The wind was NW so I picked a setup that was located near where these pics were taken and where the does tend to congregate before and after dark. Not far from one of my plots, and apple trees. I call this the safe place cause they are here all the time day or night. While watching a spike and doe mingle around a couple hundred yards out I snapped some pictures on my newly acquired Sony Hd video cam. While doing so i heard some scraping behind me over my shoulder. I turned around and seen a buck in action, scraping and urinating down his legs. I turnthe camera to the center opening, slowly reached for my bow. Glancing through the oak branches littered with leaves yet, i picked out a decent rack, so i removed the bow from its hanger. As he began walking out into the field i caught another glimpse of the rack, It was my #1 buck i call "The Ghost" .. I have been very good with controlling emotions and such while having shooters present in bow range. But I totally lost it and started shaking like crazy. This deer is one of my 8.5 yrs old, and haven't even laid eyes on him since 2012 when he was a 3.5yrs.. When I elected to pass him due to some brush, on the opening day of Gun. But a lot of history through trail cam pics.. Now Back to the story, I had just ranged a couple markers in the field to know yardage in case something happened fast, like this was unfolding.. I dialed in my HHA single pin to 40yrds where i believed he was heading.. and began to draw as he entered the center of the shooting lane in this picture.. he was heading for that doe on a steady walk. So I as softly as possible gave him the "meh", in hopes he wouldn't become fully alert, and only just peek my my way... Well he became fully alert staring me down.. Between the shakes and the trying to hurry and settle the pin before he bolts, I forgot to hold lower, on him and squeezed as the pin found the halfway mark up the back of his shoulder instead.. I don't believe he ducked at all and sent the arrow an inch or so over his back. My heart Sank!! Everything I tell myself "not to do" while at full draw, I did in the heat of the moment. Mad, Sad, bummed, sick to my stomach.. you name it. I guess its what we call Buck Fever.. After replaying the shot over and over again in my head, I thought to myself he wasn't quite 40, so I ranged that spot again, he was at 35yrds, not 40... Then thought to myself, ill check the video! Wrong.. while moving the camera, i never hit the record button... another Bummer! lol To wait on this deer, and finally get the chance with lots of history over the years and blow it! I'm staying positive due to the fact he didn't spook much, trotted 20 yards and stopped and glanced back at me, i had another arrow knocked already but those oak leaf branches blocked any shot.. and he slowly walked away.. I think he may be kill able still .. I just need to pick the right days on the right wind and the right stands and hope for the best... I do have more shooters on the lineup but this guy just made me want him even more now.. Anyhow, the reason i posted this here is for the fact of Practicing QDM. It is such a blessing to have animals of his caliber in our woods, and we aren't even a 100% co-op. Maybe 60% ish in some sort of management plan, and on poorer soils. But to pass the young bucks up and watch them and all other critters in their glory is amazing. To wait for a true slammer of a wise whitetail and beat him at his game, is just incredible, and astonishing. But to miss when the opportunity arises, is just super hard to swallow. Ive been here before, Ill probably be here again lol. Its part of the game. And its why I love to bow hunt more than gun hunt. But he will be even harder to tackle down now.. and an even bigger accomplishment if i was lucky enough again.. Decided to post a couple pictures.. Rant Over lol Good luck Everyone, Its the magical Time of year!!

How many acres do I need?
LET EM GROW replied to djc225's topic in Land Management, Food Plots and QDM
I own 13 acres, but hunt the surrounding properties also. We have maybe 50% co-op in some sort of managing. With pretty good results. Anything is possible, maybe approach the neighbors before buying a property to feel them out. OR as others have mentioned if you have the perfect funnel or pinch point on a smalle property that would be good. Or a piece you can build up. I learned a few years ago, if I stay out of my cabin on the weekends and just go home at night and drive up for each hunt the deer use my 13 acres helluva lot more long for the food plots and apple trees, they even bed right in the backyard 40' from house.. This year we stayed out again, and i missed my #1 buck Friday evening @ 5pm ..100 yards from the house. -
I like to be around 20'.. sometime more sometimes less. Depends on the spot

The shot was actually straight on basically and close in range from an elevated tree stand. Entrance hole up in neck, Exit same side behind front shoulder.. I didnt get to see exactly what was hit from the Bolt/BH, but i would think it caught some chest cavity and was living on 1 good lung. He was all green on the inside..
-
Cause I know who shot and wounded the deer....

-
Up on his neck, on the same side as exit! Idk why people do this..

At first i thought it sure was an arrow. Though its possible no doubt but i agree with others, the more i stare, it looks like a streak from a bug flying or something. I've gotten them pictures before as well. Attached is a pic I got from last year.. The damage a broad head causes should definitely show.. Neighbor took him the next day. Buck was shot with Xbow from a basically steep straight on and shot down

Our giants are showing up often in the last couple weeks. They always seem to disappear end of September through early October then reappear middle of October on...

I would say 2.5 maybe 3.5 yr old.. looks like a decent/good rack on his head

I"m a Tool & Die Maker, for a Manufacturing Company.. Garlock Sealing Technologies. I run CNC, Manual Machines, grinders etc.. I love my job. The best part is we cant hire anyone even if we wanted to. Last of a dying breed it seems.. Therefore we take the young(er) bucks since I'm only 31 lol and train them to learn all our tooling and the ins and outs of Garlock Tool making.. Great industry to be in, especially if you got a good head, can learn and advance. I heard of companies in Rochester that are seeking Machinists/Programmers that will pay $50+/hour with overtime. They cant find good machinists anymore. cant go wrong with any Skilled Trades

Id say the 300lbs mark would be an accurate guess. Im clueless as well too but the belly sags some and ears dont look big. Have a couple on cam from a few years back that got shot that also weighed more and looked bigger through cam pics..
