  1. Absolutely true... if we are to start feeding wildlife we had better be prepared to continue it for eternity... not just when we have a little spare change to buy and set out something for the critters to eat because it makes us feel good to do it... their demise will come when they forget how to forage for food during the toughest times because they have gotten use to the free handout that keeps popping up every March and April.. then all of a sudden stops because you ran out of money putting gas in your tank and can't afford the food for the increased number of deer that come to your food source every year. The habitat itself will support the number of deer that that it is able to support... and weed out what it can't... regardless of how much you want more deer around to hunt... that's how it works
  2. I can agree with the idea that restrictions need to be placed on any citizen having the right to own a tank, rocket launcher, cruise missle, etc. Where the problem lies is that it doesn't seem to stop there. There is a constant bombardment of new laws being tabled every day that have little to do with anything other than limiting law abiding citizens gun rights... new definitions of assualt weapons, limits on shells allowed in pistol clips and rifle clips... who can carry and when... none of which stop criminal activity, yet reduce 2nd amendment rights of law abiding citizens... yes, it is common sense to not allow the everday Joe to carry a grenade launcher... but making it hard for an already law abiding gun owner to keep the gun that he already has... is where common sense starts to take a nose dive... it would be nice if we could keep the 2nd amendment somewhere in between, but as long as we allow our government to pick and choose what is common sense and what is not.. we will continue to lose more and more of gun owner rights... gun owners have handed over more of their rights than they have maintained over the years... to me that is not a good trend.
  3. welcome to the forum Richie.. enjoy
  4. Mount looks great "g" .. love the ears back look
  5. Got the recurve all tuned up and ready to go!! Made about 5 natural blinds from blow-down on our lease... hoping the birds are active...
  6. I try to fill 3 tags a year.. 1 buck and 2 doe.. 1 doe of which I donated to the Venison drive... I am not opposed to filling tags at all.. like Doc said.. they give them out for a reason.. but common sense says that if you aren't seeing many deer in one area.. taking more isn't going to solve the problem.. hunting in a different area would make much more sense if you feel it necessary to fill all your tags... my biggest point was that most hunters really don't care about the population as long as they have a lot of tags to fill.
  7. According to the 2nd ammendment we have the right to keep and bear "ARMS"... there was no mention of what kind of arms... the limitations in the type of arms has been passed done by more and more gun laws over the past 200 years.. Our forefathers had it right.... the government later began restricting our gun rights to negate the 2nd ammendment's affectiveness to do what the forefathers had in mind ... defend ourselves against a rogue government. We gun owners are the last ... best .. defense against such a rogue US government.. even if our choice of arms has been limited by that government... at least giving us a chance to go out fighting if need be and not be enslaved by another tyrannical government if it should come to that.
  8. Sorry for your loss Eddie.. God Bless your mom and your family... treasure having her around for so long... my dad died at 59.. I would have loved to have him around for 30 more years
  9. Although he can't guarantee you a deer.. he should have guaranteed at least an enjoyable hunt... as a paying customer you are at least entitled to his utmost attention. I wouldn't consider him a guide or a good guy for that matter, but rather a collector of a generous donation to his bank account by you. From what I can tell.. you already knew that a deer wasn't guaranteed and were just looking for a chance to take a nice buck and enjoy yourself at the same time.. I would go as far as to contact someone from the state to make sure the guy is paying taxes on his so called "GUIDE" business. Maybe you can keep him from stealing others money.
  10. I agree Doc... I was speaking to the hunters that are not DEC supporters who complain about the lack of deer on their hunting property... and the number of tags being issued.. yet still find it necessary to fill all of their tags... If I think there is a problem with low deer numbers in my hunting area... I certainly am not going to do anything to make it worse... I think most hunters could care less about the deer population when it comes to having to make a choice between population of deer in their hunting area and filling their tags. In fact, they don't even care about who makes the recommendations for number of tags issued as long as the recommendation is for more tags
  11. I think that the only reason that nobody is being screwed with by new fad management plans and off-the-top-of-the-head ideas such as shortening the gun season is simply because the DEC is not having anything to do with any of them. And frankly, I am not bothered by that fact at all.I can bust on the DEC right along with the best of them, but in our area at least, I really have to admit that the deer herd condition in recent years has been pretty acceptable. I agree that is has been acceptable in the areas I hunt as well.. and for the record I don't see shortening the gun season as anything to do with sound deer management either... and many hunters are implementing their own "fad" management plans and seem to be doing quite well with them... the only people I see pissing and moaning about hunting are the guys that are against them..
  12. I'm sure that was kind of what was thought about the Vietnamese.. when we went into Vietnam... and they faired pretty well against the greastest military in the world... Although I'm wondering as well how I would do with my round balls and wooden arrows against even an M-16...I might have had a better chance during the Revolutionary War
  13. there wouldn't even be any turkey hunting on Long Island if it wasn't for hunting and the NWTF.. that's how much Newsday knows
  14. All the tornado warnings just missed us over night.. PHEW!

    weird

Not sure I see the edit.. I quoted your whole comment...but it wasnt really directed at your post as much as just one of my usual rants
  16. I don't think that any management plans are screwing up other guys hunting... more that guys are screwing up solid management plans. I do agree that we should be more concerned with our own hunting experience though.
  17. I don't really think most hunters care about the deer numbers anyway... whether they get 1 tag or a dozen tags ... most hunters will try to fill them all ... regardless of what the deer population is in their area... and then they will complain about not seeing deer the next year.. intent on still filling every tag that they have again.

    weird

This guy was not hunting... he was poaching... he killed someone in the act of committing a crime... if he was robbing a store and his gun went off (even accidently) and killed the store clerk... I bet he'd be charged with murder...personally I don't see the difference here. Like I stated before... he should have gotten a stiffer sentence just for what he did leading up to killing the guy. IMO there is no excuse for killing a human because you mistook them for an animal... I don't know a single human being that looks anything like a whitetail deer... this was not an accident .. it was negligence... two different things
  19. Just glad to be armed so I can at least go out fighting.. if invaded.. beats cowering under a table in the basement waiting to be captured and beheaded...
