no sorry.. never heard of that one.
-
I am dead certain I'm correct. The buck is 1.5 and in pretty good shape as well

The color of a deers face has nothing to do with age

This is a pic of me with the special call Dave made for me in the early 90's before it became popular
-
I was good friends with the inventor ( David Oathout) of the "True Talker" and helped market it almost 20 years ago... I still believe it's the best call on the market... and I still use one of the originals... a special one made for me with an extra long tube.. I also have one of the new Hunters Specialties versions... I have killed many bucks with it and would never go in the woods without it.. David lived in the ADK's... studied, recorded and video taped hundreds of deer vocalizations... his footage of the snort wheeze was the first ever captured on film... My television special in 1997 was the first time footage of it was ever seen by hunters.

Hunting with a decoy is a riot... makes for a great story too... congrats!!
-
I haven't heard of this one yet... but those are huge antlers no matter how the pic is taken... it has everything to push a buck well above the 150 mark... always use the ears as a measuring guide.. they are usually about 6"
-
This is the first I've seen this buck or heard about it... I usually give somebody the benefit of the doubt the first couple days... but like I've said before... these kinds of bucks never fly under the radar and the lack of a tag while in the truck is suspect as well... we'll have to see. A scorer for the NYSBBC would probably have been on it by now and I see everything that is scored nearly immediately.

870 has been my shotgun of choice for 35 years...

What are You Going to Be for Halloween?

I'm dressed as a 54 year old man sitting in an overstuffed chair, feet up on the ottoman watching "The Pit and the Pendulum".. scary! -

The fact that we even have to explain that to our wives means they'd never understand..lol Oh, and that's a crown royal manhatten and cigar for me

Regardless of which side of AR's one might be on... there is never reason to ridicule anyone for doing what they enjoy doing. Although I will say some hunters have a tendency to apologize right away for having taken something other than a monster buck... I say that one should never apologize for something that he didn't do wrong... unless they feel guilty somehow for the decision they made. There is nothing to be ashamed of when it comes to taking a small buck.. it's legal.. and if that's what makes you happy.. good for you.. that's what its all about. If you've been talking the "I pass on small bucks" stuff and you show up with a small buck... I would think you'd expect to get a little razzing from the boys... maybe a little razzing with a congratulatory pat on the back as well.

Northern Zone rifle opener??? Anyone Hiking in?
nyantler replied to njg0621's topic in General Hunting
Ahhh memories! I can't count how many times I've hiked back in for a weekend hunt in the ADK's... now I hike in, but get my butt back to the truck by dark... a man has to know his limitations. -
Because there will be people that break laws is not a good reason to not have them, but I do agree that enforcement of mandatory AR's would be a problem in some areas.
-
The body on that buck says at least 3.5... the rack may look small because the deer is so big... or he just isn't destine to have a big rack... but that's a big deer.
-
If you killed 6 year old bucks that were 4 Points then you have killed some of the rarest bucks in the world (unless its a 4 point with a 16-20 inch spread) because in the whitetail world that happens so infrequently that it is nearly non-existent. Unless you live in a place that is entirely made of rock with no vegetation and the deer have nothing nutritious to eat... and even then they would most likely die of malnutrition before they reached 6... it is true that a bucks antlers can start to decline when they get older, but usually not until they are much older than six... and they never revert back to a small 4 point ... normally they lose mass and maybe a g-3 or g-4 point... but their rack will still not be mistaken for a yearling buck... even a slightly malnourished buck will still have a better than average rack at 6 unless he's had an injury that causes his rack to dwarf... 99.999 % of older bucks do have bigger racks period.
-
I'm in favor of AR's and I don't do any of the things you've described... in fact, I do all the things you say guys that oppose AR's do. So, no I'm pretty sure you have it all wrong... and many hunters that are opposed to AR's make all kinds of apologies and justifications for why they had to kill a small buck... very few come out and say "I kill them because I like shooting small bucks"... which is more honest and understandable.

Like a man that puts actions behind his words... bravo bubba! -
In most respects I think all deer hunters are "meat hunters"... the term only bothers me when hunters use it as an excuse for why they shoot yearling bucks... except for areas where there are no DMP's given there are plenty of doe to put in the freezer... I am a meat hunter and have filled my doe tags during the late muzzleloader season for the last 15 years... what I don't eat I donate... I personally have never found the need to take a yearling buck to put meat in the freezer when there are so many opportunities to harvest doe(s)... but to each his own... I think if you want to take yearling bucks, just say that's what you like doing... there is nothing wrong with that... using it to justify taking a young buck means to me that you are ashamed of doing what you like to do... you shouldn't be ashamed... it's legal... so you shouldn't have to justify anything. Although I'm not into taking younger bucks... if I was I wouldn't feel the need to justify it any other way than it's my choice and that's what I want to do... hiding behind the "meat hunter" thing seems a bit disingenuous to me. Unless you don't have the option of taking a doe instead.
