You did make sure that the real broad head didn't open in flight. Are they mechanical? If one opened it will fly like complete crap and the practice one is always closed, if I'm not mistaken.

What caliber to complement a 30.06 ??
jr.deerslayer replied to mac's topic in Guns and Rifles and Discussions
I would also go with the 223, deadly on varmints and won't break the bank. Purchase some quality ammo and kill deer with it. I have seen the effects of the little 55 grain bullets on deer, many times and have never felt they were not up to the job. I would rather see 100 guys packing the 223 then 10 guys who close there eyes and flinch from the recoil of a larger caliber. -
If you're worried about the price of a electric grinder, consider this one...http://www.tractorsupply.com/larin-meat-grinder-with-wheel-3771414 i have a similar model that I hooked up to 3/4hp electric motor that does a really good job.

Looking for hunting rights near Saratoga
jr.deerslayer replied to IronBucks's topic in Land For Sale, Lease, and Requests
Yes you will annoy some people, but its amazing if your kind and courteous what can be achieved. Offering to pay a portion of the taxes will also help move you to top of the list. You'll get rejected ... probably quite a bit, but it only takes one yes to make all your work worth it. Personally I would trash the flyers and meet the farmers face to face, there's a ton of competition in Saratoga and you'll have to offer something special, something that 900 people already haven't done. -
We did OK, at least for early season...I believe we had 3 flocks come in, first one we were messing around outside and they came in silent but we made good on the last 2.

Almost ready getting my stamp tomorrow, remember you need to have last years license. Should be a productive early season as many of the corn fields have already been chopped. I start looking for waterfowl hunting ammo on sale right around now, I also shoot 3 in. Kent in BB with a pure gold modified choke. If any one notices any decent sales for a case of shells I would appreciate the heads up.

Are you kidding, have you watched a video where cops had to shoot someone. If not it normally goes something like this... 18 shots fired but no one seriously injured. I have seen one empty his 9 mm twice before hitting a car- hit deer. My dad was so embarrassed he asked the cop if he wanted him to do it for him.

local walmart denied me the right to buy ammunition
jr.deerslayer replied to apoallo's topic in General Chit Chat
Although most workers in the ammunition department are mildly retarded, the only time I have been asked for a permit was when I purchased 22 ammo. I told them it was for a rifle and they sold it to me, as they should. It may be because the Walmart's by me did away with firearm sales a long time ago. -
I'm sure you'll be fine brings back so many memories. My family had been camping in a cabin for a few days, we would fish all day and only go back to the cabin for sleep and meals. One night, around 2 or clock I heard wings fluttering against a screen above my head. It had been so hot I opted to sleep in the screened in porch. I hit the screen to scare what was making the noise away and it worked. A few minutes later I heard the same noise grabbed my glasses and stood up to to see if the insect was on the outside of the screen and to scare whatever it was away. In the darkness I saw what I had thought to be a giant moth on the inside so I ran into the kitchen to grab a flyswatter...I was going to kill this thing. I turned on the light to find a bat flying straight at me, I hit the dirt and crawled to my parent room while this crazy thing is flying overhead. I tell them that I'm pretty sure there's a bat in the cabin. Of course I started to second guess my eyes and started to wonder if maybe I had awoke in the middle of a dream as the bat hunt had proven unsuccessful with the lights on and both my mother and father looking. They told me to go back to bed and I replied fine as long as I sleep in this bedroom and dad gets the screened in- porch. Being the brave man he is, he grabbed a flashlight and stumbled into my previous sleeping quarters. I turned the lights and a few minutes later i am blinded by a flashlight that's flashing and lighting up the living room. I hear Son of A bi*** he was right.. its a bat! I run to close the door to keep the bat contained within the living room, which in turn traps my dad in the room with the bat that's flying into windows doing anything to escape. I let my dad in and now its the three of us trapped in a bedroom with my sister and her friend in another adjoining bedroom wondering what all the commotion is all about. It turns out my mother that works for a Heath department is the route of our fears as she was always bringing home the" if you see me" rabies stickers in the shape of a bat.We call the park ranger and explain the predicament we are involved in.My father and I make the courageous journey out of the bedroom and out of the cabin to meet the ranger. A few minutes pass and he comes armed to the hilt with 2 tennis rackets, a headlamp, and a bag to catch the illusive critter. We reenter the cabin, my father and the ranger armed with tennis rackets and me with my trout fishing net. The ranger was convinced we needed to catch it so it could be tested for rabies. Upon entering we find nothing, so I was told to shut of the main living room light and then quickly turn it back on if we heard fluttering of the wings.Upon a complete walk through we find nothing. That is until the ranger taps a wall with his racket and we all hear a scream or what ever bats do.The ranger leaves and returns with a pry bar, Board by board the ranger peels back hoping the bat decides to come out. On the second to last board of about ten, finally the bat finally takes flight. I was ordered to turn off the light so the bat would calm down. For a few minutes we sat in the darkness without hearing anything. Until the ranger shouts that something had flown passed him. I hurriedly flipped on the living room light find the hideous bat completing figure 8's in the living room. The first swing of the tennis racket by the ranger takes out the only ceiling light in the cabin. We are left in total darkness with to idiots swinging at sounds and feeling of passing wind. Once again I hit the dirt and located a decent flashlight which I used to illuminate the bats last flight. The ranger swings and hits the bat perfectly....right into my father. The two men are screaming as if they have just encountered a bear or deadly snake. The ranger puts the bat in the bag, and returned the following morning to fix the light bulb and boards above the fireplace. The rest of the night was used to clean broken shards of glass that now had encompassed nearly all of the cabin.

Walk-In cooler/freezer
jr.deerslayer replied to jr.deerslayer's topic in DIY - Do It Yourself, tutorials and videos
I'm not building one yet, just saw the article and thought others may get some ideas. With the cost of insulation so high buying a "real one" may be a valid alternative. -
With the opener for bow being so early this year I have begun reading different plans for a walk in cooler. While searching I found this article, seems very interesting. http://deepsixbrewing.com/misc/article.pdf . Total cost was around 1500 dollars, pricey but may be worth the investment.

Through standard bow hunting woods it will work fine, you will occasionally range a branch that's before the target. After I get situated in the tree, I range a few trees around me that I hope the deer will walk by so I don't need to be playing with a rangefinder when they do come in. The most basic RF will range deer with in bow hunting distances. I have a Bushnell 450 with the square reticle, as long as you can hold very steady I can range deer to about 250 yards or so. My buddy can range deer at 1000 yards with his Leica. For bow hunting distances they have the same accuracy, even though he has the cross-hairs as his reticle. As long as you keep the target within the square you'll be fine

In the woods, a 1000 dollar rangefinder will have trouble getting a reading through brush, normally in thick areas I will take a few readings until one seems feasible. They all use a laser so naturally the first thing the laser hits is whats going to give you a reading which can be a major problem.

ok, thanks.

I'm looking to put a sight tape on my Black gold Ascent. I'm strictly shooting pencil marks now. I would like something easier to see and clear up the clutter a bit. Anyone have any luck making sight tapes with the software available?

Quiver and sight suggestion for new bow

Check out Montana's black gold ascent. I love my single pin slider, but you can have them customized for however many pins you want. Super bright. -
NEW YORK (AP) - Ten days after the Colorado movie theater massacre, federal lawmakers introduced a bill that would effectively ban people like suspect James Holmes from buying thousands of rounds of ammunition by mail or online. "It's time to close the loophole that's allowing killers - deranged, insane - and even terrorists to buy ammunition online," said U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey. He was joined Monday on the steps of City Hall in Manhattan by U.S. Rep. Carolyn McCarthy of New York to announce the Stop Online Ammunition Sales Act. McCarthy's husband was killed and their son paralyzed in 1993 after a gunman opened fire on a Long Island Rail Road train, leaving five others dead. Lautenberg said he and McCarthy, both Democrats, were "on a mission": to ensure the safety of all Americans by passing legislation that would close loopholes in gun laws allowing people like the suspect in the Aurora, Colo., shootings "to anonymously stockpile for mass murder." Under the bill, only licensed dealers would be allowed to sell ammunition. They would have to notify a law enforcement official within five business days about any sale of more than 1,000 rounds to an unlicensed person. The bill also would require buyers who aren't licensed dealers to show a photo ID. And that would mean eye contact with someone purchasing ammunition. "If you're going to buy these large amounts of ammunition, somebody should see your face," Lautenberg said. Holmes purchased 6,000 rounds of ammunition online "like you might order shoes or food," Lautenberg said. "He didn't have to interact with another human being who could have noticed his abnormal behavior." The legislation, to be introduced in Congress this week, was spurred by the Colorado movie theater shooting rampage that killed 12 people and injured more than 50. The suspect, Holmes, was charged Monday with 142 counts in the massacre; he hasn't yet entered a plea. The July 20 rampage follows other recent mass violence including the 1999 Columbine shootings, the 2007 Virginia Tech massacre and last year's shooting in Tucson that killed six and seriously injured U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona. "We are calling for a national outcry to stop gun violence in this country," McCarthy said. On the morning after the Aurora killings, McCarthy said, she was brought back "to that moment when your family went through a similar tragedy, and the pain does not go away." The White House on Monday didn't immediately offer its support to the Democrat-sponsored bill. "I haven't seen the specific piece of legislation that has been offered up today," White House spokesman Josh Earnest said at the daily briefing, adding that it would be "evaluated." He said President Barack Obama "believes in the Second Amendment of the Constitution, in the right to bear arms." But the president "also believes that we should take robust steps, within existing law" to address gun issues. Since the Aurora shootings, one of the most outspoken voices in favor of gun control has been New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who is pressing Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney to tackle the issue of gun violence.
