Where do you hunt or are planning to hunt? Like mentioned, if you are hunting Suffolk or Westchester you can use it. Anywhere else you need the bow privilege license.

This little piggy went to the market .... And the 6th?
DirtTime replied to turkeyfeathers's topic in General Chit Chat
6 toes, 6 fingers, just don't wave it around in the woods. You might be mistaken for a solid 2.5 year old buck. -
From the DEC site the "Sportsman" package does not include bow or muzzle loader. http://www.dec.ny.gov/permits/6099.html

Thank you. There are spots I could have fished besides the creek. Not giving my spots out. LOL. We just wanted to get out, cook over a fire, relax, and just re-energize for the hunting season. Those pics are from Lily Park, the g/f wanted to go, so we went. I still miss going to the covered bridge in Blenheim. Irene took a great historical landmark for that area in her wake.

It's not just WNY or CNY, it's all of NYS! Hunting pressure is hunting pressure. The farther you venture from the burbs, the less pressure you will see. You want less pressure? Go hunt up north. You may have 2000 acres all to yourself! That's seclusion. Hit the Catskills away from the masses. There is public land that's not pressured much at all. The issue with public land is DEC does not do their part on most lands to log or make the land more conservation friendly. Anyone who has to hunt strictly public land will have a little envy of those with private land. It is what it is. You make the best of the land you do have access too like it or not. I hunted some really crappy public woods last deer season ( I think I saw one other hunter in there ), thick as hell and tough waking if you left the trails. I still hunted it the best I could. I didn't like it, but it was better then crying I don't have a place to hunt. I have close to 200 acres of private land most years in the NZ. But, I have that permission because I have known the family for almost 20 years, and they got the rights for me to hunt the neighbors land. I didn't ask them to, they just did it. They are some of the best people on the planet! Every time I walk on that land to hunt or camp, I know I am lucky to have that property to hunt, and I make sure I show them appreciation. If they need something and I can do it, it's a done deal. The only stipulation is, I cannot bring a friend/s with me. Except the g/f. She is as welcome on that land as I am.

Would make more sense to have two on the back. At least that way you would keep the hands off the butt. Just sayin'. -
I pay more attention to the wind then the moon. Like Papist said, unless it's a blizzard or raining ( yes, call it an excuse W/E, but I do not like hunting in the rain ) you have to be out there.

Hey, when on a budget, and then go over it, you have to improvise, adapt, and over-come. None of these fancy gadgets we have today would be here without someone pioneering to create them.

That's what happens when you drink chocolate flavored beers for to long. You can also get 'other' appendages. -
There are thousands of acres of public land that doesn't get much pressure in the Catskills, well within that 5 hour drive. Do some homework and have a look. If all you want is private land, you won't get permission by asking on a web site. Call a few realtors and ask what they have in the lines of leasing land, or if they can point you in the right direction.

Trials and tribulations of broadhead sighting.....
DirtTime replied to zeus1gdsm's topic in Bow Hunting
As I was asked in a different thread and then checked. Is everything tuned up and level? You are shooting more then one broadhead at the same spot on your target. That will zip off the vanes, and even maybe put small cuts or abrasions on the shafts. Shoot one broadhead to one dot on the target. Some might disagree, but it will save you some headaches. -
Good looking bucks. Good luck this season.

Interesting thread. I just got measured and have a new DL. Used to shoot 31" arrows, now, 28". With vanes, incerts, and nocks I am just about at 300. New FP's and BH's are 100, putting me at 400 total. 55#DW. I was thinking of going back up to the 125 tips and heads, but 400 total should be good for my set up. The big thing is like already mentioned, making sure the spine is on par, and the arrow will shoot the DW you use. A 5060 arrow from a 70# bow might not be a good idea.

A few in the past have hinted at it. not outright saying it, but, suggestive enough if you pay attention. The bottom line is, public land will always get hit harder, especially land in suburbia. I never hunted the burbs unlit a few years ago, I am not a fan, but being in the woods hunting is better then sitting on the couch. I actually plan to hunt that spot again this year, the difference, I know what I am getting into this time, and prepared for it.

Um........................ Me?

I don't feel land owners should be forced to open their land to the public. This has been talked abut more then a few times here. Look at it this way, say you have a pool, is it OK for anyone to just stop in and use as long as they bring the beer? Or, just walk in and start watching TV if I leave a $5 spot on the table when I leave?
-
I generally shoot between 1 1/2" - 2" longer then my draw. For me, yes the old " blade behind the hand " thing, and I always felt a little longer arrow made sure the blades never touch the bow. There's enough that can go wrong using a bow that everything you can do to put odds more in your favor is a good thing. IMO.

Fever is in the air for sure!

So, what came first, the kid or the chicken? LOL

Moms will do that. I would have thought you would get a toy bow, camo up the clothes and have him out there. As for the dog........I am not trying to hijack, but when we got our Husky, my g/f bought a witch hat and cape for a dog, and paid to have professional pictures taken. I was a little more then PO'ed. LOL

I know you didn't. Next year I am thinking of going with a crosshair bow sight. But, for this year, I want to give the one pin a shot. Easier for me to just take out the other pins. Food for thought for anyone who wants to try and not buy a new sight.
-
Yes I get it. I agree. I am just offering an alternative for some who may not have the means to buy a new site but want a single pin. Just take out the other pins.

No where near me growie. Still a couple hundred miles away. But those rides are fun. When we went camping this weekend we took the long route to get to the camp grounds. Saw some beautiful country, were on gravel roads for a good ways, it was fun. It was Friday afternoon so we didn't see many deer. But, we will not be taking that route again. One spot on the road was pretty vertical and when we hit the crest you couldn't see the road. Scared the crap out of both of us and the dog.

I started thinking about this a few weeks ago after reading a couple threads on here. If you already have a 3,4, or 5 pin it's pretty easy to remove the extra pins and make it a one pin instead of buying a whole new sight. JMO
