I think this is what's making the birds show up in different areas near me, and in larger numbers. They have built two new housing developments and a third is in the works. They are pretty large with appx. 20-30 new houses in each. They are also putting in some sort of solar panel field not that far away, which was an area I would see deer and turkey in all the time. I now see them a few miles away and closer to some public land I hunt. So I'm hoping for a good year in that area.

Good luck out there.

You hunting turkeys this Spring Biz? Not here much so I probably missed it if you posted somewhere you are going after the wiley birds.

Nice fence you have there.

I wasn't trying to give any crap, just sharing that I have come to enjoy using my bow once in a while now for turkey. I'll probably do a few summersaults if I kill a bird with it. You should give it a go Belo.

I used my bow more then my shotgun a few years ago for Spring turkey. I had one of the best days out I've had in a long time. I called a nice tom in, he hung up about 10 yards out of what I felt my effective range with the bow was. Even typing this my heart is thumping from memory. It felt so much more exciting to be at full draw waiting on that bird to just take a few more steps towards me. He finally strolled off and I let the bow down. It felt like hours passed but was only a few minutes. The toughest part was trying to deal with motion. Once getting eyes on the bird setting the call down and getting the bow up and ready. I can't use mouth calls so it makes a bit more of a challenge. I take the bow out a few times each Spring now.

Anyone know what happened to NYfirearms.com?
DirtTime replied to Gobbler Chaser's topic in General Chit Chat
They did a complete over haul on the site. I pretty much stopped going there when they sold the site to an anti gun corp. . I'm shocked it's even still up. -
It was nothing compared to what he wanted. he was met with resistance from both parties so being realistic those orders made no difference to the average hunter. There's going to be more meetings with both parties on a bunch of things that I am starting to doubt will see the light of day. He's not going to get away with his full plans just like most of us with any common sense knew he wouldn't. Not every gun owner goes nuts with knee jerk reactions every time there's a whisper in the wind.

I sighted the one I put on my Savage 301 20 with slugs last fall because it's also being used as a deer gun as well as turkey. Then checked the pattern at 15 and 30 yards with the shot I'm using for turkey. The pattern was fine last fall and still is.

I brought this topic up years ago after seeing it being done out west. If rimfires were legal I might give a .22LR a try. Aiming at the base of the neck or just back of the wing. A centerfire in anything larger then a 17HMR would seem excessive to me. Compensator: "I just got me a new turkey thumper!". Buddy: "Whatchda git?". Compensator: ".300 Weatherby Mag with a Zeiss V4 3-12x56!". Buddy: Blank stare.

OK, which one of you has the new job getting paid to advertise all this health nut crap and male enhancement garbage? I get it, time's are tough for some people right now but c'mon, no need to crap where you eat. -
Bows on in case I decide to use that again this Spring. Two shots with each with the shotguns I own shows nothing changed with patterns. I was going to make my own slate call and try it this year, but decided to hold off until Summer when I have a little more time to experiment with the project. Picked up a Quaker Boy box call and some Primos chalk this morning at Walmart. I was surprised to see them there so I figured why not.

I took a walk down the tracks towards a new chunk of public land they opened up last year. Once I was about 1/4 mile away I laid on the hooter. I was shocked myself when I heard them sound off not just from the WMA land, but also from the property behind me. Two other areas seem quiet this year. I'm seeing a ton in fields where I never seen a single bird in the 5 years of driving past them. I don't know of there was a population boost or they are relocating due to growth in housing tracts popping up all over the place. Part of me is looking forward to the Spring season and part of me just isn't feeling it this year. I just seem stuck in a rut the past few weeks and seem to be struggling to maintain the will to do some things. I haven't even wet a line yet this year.

I know, I just think making pot legal now is going to make a lot of people who would usually have good judgement do stupid things. Just like with booze. I will say that I hope I'm wrong, and time will tell.

The article sates that law was passed in 1968, long before Andy was a politician. I bet he will push it to the max though. I can see where this might be a huge decision for some.................. BUT! I honestly can't believe this is even an issue. I guess the stoner hunters will start pouring out of the woodwork now. I'll choose my guns over a buzz any day, all day, and even on the 366th day for Leap Year.

A Case Of Do As I Say Not As I Do

It's rather comical to drive by the place and see tree stands here and there once in a while during the bow season. I've thought about laying in the horn, but never do out of respect for fellow hunters. -
I usually just use worms and fish the bottom. Sinker tied on light test set below the hook, basically like a leader. I've had good luck with old cheese, the stuff that won't break down easily. Velveeta knocks off work OK. I've had really good luck with spoiled liver. Buy a package and separate it and put it in zip bags in the freezer. The day before you're ready take some out early in the AM, cut it up frozen in small chunks and let it sit so it goes bad, outside is strongly recommended. Put a small chunk on a hook, and bottom fish it. USE RUBBER OR LATEX GLOVES! If you don't use gloves the stink will get into your hands and take a while to get it out. It might sound gross but it works. I used to know a guy who used dead crayfish and did pretty good. I've heard of people using raw chicken chunks, and a bunch of other odd baits. They are a scavenger type of fish, mainly bottom feeders, so they will eat almost anything.

They do at least one burn there each year. A couple years ago they also took out a bunch of trees in one area so you can now see from I90 to Old State Rd. and vise versa. It's said they do it to stop invasive plants from taking over and to control the massive tick population in that place. There's a few guys here who take decent deer outta there just about every year.
