  1. 12 ga 870 w slug barrel, open sights, using Remington sluggers.
  2. A perfect day to check trail cameras, scout or move a tree stand. Let the rain wash away your scent afterwards. Heading back out soon.
  3. If it's warm weather I empty out a fridge and put down some freezer paper. I hang the deer up to skin it out, quarter it up and put it all in the fridge. I'll let it cool and cut the meat up at my leisure. It's worked really well for me.
  4. I pulled a few cards this weekend and saw a few fawns with spots. It looked like they were quite pronounced and not fading. I've seen fawns during early Oct that had very faint spots on the upper sides.
  5. He's old enough to dance. I hope you see him walking around during the season. Aging deer by looking at them is guessing for the most part in my opinion, as there are a lot of things that come into play. I'd guess he's in his 3rd year. Great pics, thanks for sharing!
  6. thanks, I'll check the firmware version. I had a bunch of black pictures which I assume were the night shots.
  7. I picked up a Browning BTC-6HD and am not impressed. It's not taking night time pictures at all and the day time pics have a lot of blurr on moving subjects. The lack of night time pics will have me contacting Browning to get it fixed or replaced.
  8. I saw a key buck last time I was down there. Not much meat on em but beautiful animals.
  9. I picked up some warm weather mucks this past spring and really like them so far. They were on sale at the time. So....I guess you can add that to the list of things I've added this year. I use them for stream fishing, checking trail cams and plan to wear them during early archery season. I am thinking about another pair of boots, looking at Rocky Broadheads or Danner High ground for those long treks up and down hills on state land.
  10. I would leave the stand where it is since you had success there last year. If the property is large enough you may want to think about putting up a second stand in another area as a back up. As far as the rut goes, there could be an estrus doe around at anytime in November so be prepared for anything and sit all day if you can.
  11. I picked up some Nocturnal lighted nocks, extra 100 gr Muzzy's just because, one of the lights you hook on your cap, another set of base layers with silvertec, and another trail camera. Not sure what else, but think I'm set for this week anyways.
  12. I had two out on state land last year, far off the road and not near a trail. Both were stolen which kinda put a damper on my trail camera sets. I do have a few out this year but just don't feel the need to post pictures online.
  13. A buck rub made be the brows or stickers points. The bear rubs I have seen are all 5' up or more.
  14. Most state owned hunting lands around here have their own separate regulations. Time spent scouting in the woods, walking every inch you have time for and trying to get an idea what the deer and other hunters are doing is a good place to start. It may take some time but trying to figure it all out is half the fun.
  15. This video makes it look fun: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoMKYhhsJWw
  16. That's a great article, thanks for posting. What stream were you fishing?
  17. Hunting from a tree stand has a lot of advantages, but the main one is being able to draw your bow with much less chance of a deer seeing you make the movement to draw and get into position to make a shot. I'll take a tree stand over a ground blind in most situations.
  18. Nice looking bucks. I have read and seen studies that show a how a buck may be a spike in his first year but when left to grow can produce a great rack in a few years.
  19. I think a lot of bow hunters (myself and friends included) know they will put the time in during bow, gun and late season to get a few deer. Taking a doe with a bow is fun but I usually wait until gun or black powder season when the temps are cooler. I'm not in a doe only area but I'd take a doe early this year if given the chance because I'm out of tasty venison.
  20. I don't know what to think anymore about the decisions the DEC makes, but this one doesn't make a lot of sense because bow hunters don't take that many doe to begin with. In the areas set aside for doe only for the first two weeks I'm not so sure hunters can harvest enough doe during all seasons combined due to the fact that a lot of the land is posted, private and ideal deer sanctuaries. If the DEC is issuing a lot of doe tags and they just aren't being filled then I don't know what the solution is in those areas, but limiting a paying archery hunter to a doe only situation will tend to turn off the majority.
  21. I saw that while out hiking yesterday, apples dropping and a ton of large hickory nuts coming down early.
  22. I'm seeing a lot of deer, fawns, lots of twins around me. For the past few years it's been coyote central and I hear them howling nearby at night every week, but I've not heard them in 5 months now. The red fox are still here and I'm sure the coyotes will return.
  23. Lots of great advice and ideas on here. Stand placement chatter is music to my ears!!! >>>--------->
