It is a great site. Good job nyantler. It's really a great resource, you'll see buck kills on there that you never would have know were taken. I check it quite often.

Where do you keep your bow while on stand?
genesee_mohican replied to ATbuckhunter's topic in Bow Hunting
Usually on a bow hander within easy reach. In my hands at times or as soon as I hear or see deer aproaching. -
I've said it on here a bunch of times. I've seen some of the biggest bucks wandering around on days in the mid 60's during the rut. Enjoy the warm temps and hunt all day if you can. Staying warm on stand won't be an issue.

8M Saw what looked to be a 2.5 year old buck hounding does around 4:30pm yesterday. He was grunting, and sticking tight to them. Within 25 yards but no shot.

If there are does in heat in the area then the bucks will be moving. In years past I have seen a lot big bucks walking around on mid 60 days in early-mid November. You just never know. Next week Iow winds and high bp pressure will be a bonus.

Scott Murray of "Hunters Creek Outdoors" arrowed this giant 8-point on 10/26/2015 in Erie County per nyantler-outdoors page: http://www.nyantler-outdoors.com/2015-new-york-whitetails-page-3.html

I live a mile from the park and hunted there last Saturday. I sat till noon and saw just one small buck, no does and I was in a location I usually see a lot of deer. Just very little movement on Sat, the evening sit was the same. I'm sure it will pick up this weekend.

39 years of archery and have not had that happen. I think I'm pulling around 58 lbs the last few years.

Sound like you have some great spots saved up there grampy. I always save a few select stands for the rut, when the mature deer are more likely to be moving. 2 stands are at the base of an oak ridges where it meets a transition area and bedder area, far off the road. A second stand is located in an open area which is in the middle of a brushlot/bedding area and I know the bucks will be cruizin that. And another that is between two bedding areas on a ridge. I believe in the theory that...the first time to a stand is your best chance at get a crack at a mature buck. I pick the days to use them carefully.

Have you ever accidentally shot something?
genesee_mohican replied to ATbuckhunter's topic in General Chit Chat
I got some good laughs out of this thread. One of my very first times out bow hunting I drew back on a nice buck and released what I thought was a good shot. I got down to find my arrow had hit an unseen sapling dead center. I guess that was an accident. -
Ain't that the truth! I'm amazed how many tree stands I come across while scouting/hunting. Remote hard to get to places on the river bottom are no exception. But it is state land and a nice place to hunt.

Mainly wunderground.com but also use a weather radio too. Then step outside and see which way the wind is blowing.

Cooler for hanging deer near letchworth? ??
genesee_mohican replied to DanielT's topic in Deer Processing
Do you mean a deer processor? South end of park: Ressler's Processing Dalton, NY 14836 (585) 476-5756 North end: Larry's Deer Processing Avon, NY 14414 (585) 226-2527 Good luck this weekend, GM -
I wonder too if the deer was struck by a car, and someone then came along and cut the head off.
-
Wow, what a deer! A perfect 10 point, 145 inches all day. I'd have to quit my job and hunt that thing hard. Age is hard to determine, but often asked about on here.
-
Great looking deer. They should start moving more in the daylight soon. Hope you get a crack at one of them.

Next Thurs, Oct 29th is starting to look like a good day to take off. Cooler temps. I'll pick and choose a few days between then and mid November to take off.

It's a real asset to hear well in the woods and I'm thankful to still have good hearing. During cold days on stand I'll wear 2 or even 3 fleece caps to keep my head warm and something around my neck that I can pull up over my nose too, but I really want to have my ears uncovered to hear what is going on around me.
-
I use Python locks too and have one of the metal boxes that you bolt to the tree with lag bolts, then lock the outside of the box with a pad lock. I also use a small pad lock on the outside of the cam so they can't take the card.
-
Sorry to hear about this. Most of us know the sinking feeling and it stinks. I had 2 trail cams stolen last year. It has put a bit of a damper on one of the things I truly enjoy. Now I really limit the location, use chains and box locks which is a hassle. I'm sure they will find a way to rip those off too.

Nice deer and good eats! Congrats!

Before you head out again I would take the arrow(s) your shot and try to find out why they went high. Take the same arrow and broad head setup, try to simulate the shot to see where the arrow is hitting. If it was from a tree stand, you may want to try shooting the arrow from an elevated spot to test. If the arrow is hitting fine when you test it, then you know your doing something wrong during the moment of truth. High shots are usually attributed to not bending at the waist during the shot which tends to make the shot go high. Good luck.

Another morning here in 8M where the winds are shifting all over. SW one minute, NE the next. It's been like that a few days this week. No way I'm going into one of my good stands.

Which part of NY produces the biggest deer?
genesee_mohican replied to mattman77's topic in Deer Hunting
Here's a good link from the NY Big buck club that shows the county they were taken in: http://www.nysbigbuckclub.com/2014-new-york-record-whitetails.html -
I think i am just going to hunt this year
genesee_mohican replied to ApexerER's topic in Deer Hunting
I wash my cloths year round in All Free & Clear, after reading about it in a hunting mag. It has no odor and no extra cost. I wear moisture wicking and bacteria inhibiting under layers, shower in scent free soap, brush teeth with baking soda, use scent killer spray on boots hat, pack bow, release and anything else I carry in. I keep foods to apples, raisins, nuts, maybe a protein bar. And still play the wind as the number 1 rule. It can't hurt and it's just part of my preparation now.
