I'll hunt deer as long as I can still get out there and new regs won't stop that. I may be a bit more selective in the buck I take. I think a lot of hunters around here would still take more bucks than they are alloted. Thier daughters are wives would now have to get dressed up in some hunting cloths and make the trip to the check in station. No lol.

Me too! Would love to hear how this giant was taken. Congrats to your friend and thanks for sharing. Getting a buck in the late season is hard enough, but a deer of this caliber is someting else.

Nice sized flock. It looks like a great place to hunt back there.

Coyote Den near my property.... need help
genesee_mohican replied to NYbuck50's topic in General Hunting
Wow, I'm sure some are joking on here, but that anti's will eat this up. I have a pack of coyotes who have lived near my home for 5 years. I hear them howling many nights year round, sometimes very close by. We also have a very healthy population of deer, large flocks of turkey, and rabbit and the small rodent population has exploded in the last few years. I realized coyotes will take fawns in the spring if they can, or chickens that are unattended. They are opportunistic and clever. But all wildlife seem to coexist in good balance here. The hound hunters will be around for a month and they will take a few coyotes and fox and I'm sure a few were taken during gun season. The coyotes will just have more pups in the spring and more coyotes will move in from other areas. -
I think you'd have a better chance seeing a mountain lion. The red wolf (Canis rufus) is one of the world's most endangered canids. Once common throughout the eastern and southcentral United States, red wolf populations were decimated by the early part of the 20th Century as a result of intensive predator control programs and the degradation and alteration of the species' habitat. The red wolf was designated an endangered species in 1967, and shortly thereafter the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service initiated efforts to conserve the species. Today, more than 100 red wolves roam their native habitats in eastern North Carolina, and nearly 200 red wolves are maintained in captive breeding facilities throughout the United States. http://www.fws.gov/redwolf/

A good season would mean being healthy and having enough free time to get out hunting several days during bow, gun and black powder. Seeing some nice bucks and taking at least one deer for the freezer. Hunting with friends and taking a nice buck are always enjoyable. I don't think I've ever had a bad season, it's all be good. I've had unsuccessful years but I can't think of many things I'd rather be doing.

At $4.12 a bushel that had to be quite an expensive trip. What to do those wagons hold? 1000 bushel?

I had a few days where I didn't see a deer but had a great time. And when I say "days", I'm talking in the stand before light and staying till sundown. Time well spent away from the noise and daily stress. And not seeing deer just makes me try and figure out the area I'm hunting that much more. Back to the scouting board.

WE HAVE MOUNTAIN LION IN NEWBURGH AND PROOF
genesee_mohican replied to cynthiafu's topic in General Chit Chat
It might be time for an intervention. -
The main thing is trying to find an area that hasn't seen a lot of hunting pressure, where the deer are moving during daylight hours. I look for a spot that has a thick bedding area close to a food source (like acorns this year) and set up downwind. Mid day and early afternoon movement seem to be good this year.

Here is the DEC page the makes it clear: http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/35010.html

That's awesome. Thanks for sharing. Here is another pretty cool one, the eastern US water vapor loop: http://www.ssd.noaa.gov/goes/east/eaus/flash-wv.html

I process all the deer I take and know exactly what your talking about on that cut. I try to slice that artery out. I'm sure it would go unnoticed when eating it, but I cut it out.

Here in 8M I hunted all day Saturday and heard very few shots. I had a doe come by at 10 and passed, then had a limping doe come by at 11:30 and decided to take her with my 54 cal Thompson. Starting to see deer out in the fields well before sun down again.

Nice 10 pt. I'm guessing 127 3/8 inches Keep us posted on the official score.

I get cold fairly easy too, but I can sit all day now thanks to The Heater Body Suit. I pack that in with me and put it on once I'm at my stand or ground blind. I also use the foot and hand warmers. I just makes hunting more enjoyable. Pack a lunch and stay out as long as you wish. This year I've seen a lot of deer mid day (11am to 2pm). check em out: http://www.heaterbodysuit.com/index.html GM

I have seen zero this year, but hear them howling outside my window at least a few nights a week. My neighbors that hunt haven't seen one either. Very nocturnal critters this time of year.

The knuckle bone on that front shoulder is pretty stout. I hit a buck there this year at 40 yards with a 2,000 fps SST and didn't get pass thru either. It took out the heart and was touching the skin on the opposite side. I was surprised it didn't pass thru but seeing all the large bone fragments in the front shoulder l could see how it lost a lot of energy.

In the areas I hunt here in Central Livingston Co it appears the number of hunters are dwindling each year and this first part of the season has been fairly quiet so far. The deer herd seems to be a tad lower than normal but everyone I know has taken a buck or passed on one. Factors that make the herd seem low include the deer moving less due to the amount of food available to them this fall. More night time movement seems to be taking place this fall too. But I expect the coming snow will help hunters tag some deer or at least see sign of where the deer spent some time before vanishing back to their hiding spot.

How windy does it have to be to keep you from hunting?
genesee_mohican replied to LiveFree1776's topic in Bow Hunting
You can't get them if your not out there. Windy days are great for sneaking up on deer, especially in standing corn. -
I live in MM and haven't heard of this deer, but that doesn't mean much. I know I didn't take it.....lol

I guess when it comes to cooking meats of any kind we should all start a fire in the back yard with some wood we just cut from the nearest woods, break a stick off a neaby tree, scewer the meat and cook it over the fire. No salt......... nothing but plain meat cooked to get the natural flavor. wow

The rubber boots are nice for crossing streams or boggy area's but I like Rocky boots. The Lynx are light for long distance ventures and have 800gram Thinsulate. There are several others and some have up to 1200gram Thinsulate for warmth. I'm sure other brands are good too.
