  1. I'm planning on being in the stand sun up till sundown tomorrow.
  2. 70 F here yesterday. I saw a great buck at 3PM, had others tell me they saw a monster yesterday afternoon as well.
  3. It's a big difference out in the woods. Shooting in the back yard, standing on the ground in a tee shirt vs in a tree at awkward angles with all our hunt garb on are 2 very different animals. I'm always amazed how foreign it feels. One of the best things we can do when you get to your spot is draw our bow a LOT, and try to see how you might do with different opportunities. It will make your more comfortable and confident. .
  4. I like an afternoon wind. You can slip in close to the deer without them hearing you. Most times it will calm down for the last hour.
  5. I use the small hand warmers and put one in each pocket. I wear a thin glove on my release (trigger finger hand) and a heavy one on my bow hand. I like to hold my bow at the ready as much as possible.
  6. Looks like a great spot, good find. Good quality pictures, I will have to look hard at the Covert for my next camera. Hope you nail a big one there.
  7. I live a mile from the park, east side and do most of my hunting on the north east side of the park. I was in there on Wed for a short hunt after work, watched a few doe munching on acorns, not close enough for a shot. I'll hope to hunt it hard the next few weekends and am looking forward to that and some time off. When I come over to the west side I'll try to stop in at the cabin C area to look my fellow park hunters up so we can have a beer and swap some stories. Hope you guys have a great time and nail one! GM
  8. Sure is a nice deer and I hope you see him 20 yds broadside from your stand!
  9. Sounds like a hunt of a lifetime! Congrats!
  10. I recall several seasons, where on warm sunny days, highs in the 70's, some sunny, some cloudy, some windy...... and I saw the biggest bucks of the season. Why? I don't know, maybe just the rut but it was early to mid Nov each time. Ever since those encounters I'm out there any time I can get out. I've seen plenty of slow days when it's warm, but I know there's always a chance to see something.
  11. I would say you have to use what works for you and practice as much as possible. My bow is fairly fast so I use my top pin from zero to 20 yards. But shooting out of a tree at 10 yards, I know I need to aim a bit lower. I hunted for years with just one pin and kept all my shots under 20 yards. Kept it simple and had fun. One of the main things you want to do is practice with your broad heads as they may not fly the same as your field points. Good luck this year!
  12. I think the rut is spread out from Oct 25th to January. Last season I saw several mature bucks with a doe on Oct 27 and Nov 3rd. It was a wild scene both times.
  13. No such thing? I think a lot of whitetail experts have some helpful information on it: http://www.deeranddeerhunting.com/featured/alsheimer-how-the-october-lull-influences-your-deer-hunting
  14. Regulations on the use of tree stands can vary. Some State lands don't allow you to leave a stand over night. Others allow you to place a stand so many days prior to the season and require you to take them down by a certain date.
  15. No, I personally am not going to sit in another hunters stand. It may be state land, free for all to use, but I know that hunter scouted and worked hard to put the stand up. I'm respecting that. I'll turn away and keep looking for another spot.
  16. That has to be the nicest bunch of bucks I've seen on here. wow
  17. When they are looking at you and at full alert they are ready to flee. At first sign of danger they drop with lightning speed to load their leg muscles for the first bound. They can drop a lot, just watch hunting videos.
  18. I've seen plenty of deer at mid day and shot one of my best bucks during that time. I prefer to stay on stand all day as many of my set ups are 1-2 miles off the road.
  19. If I had one rifle to buy, it would be the new Winchester 70. Very accurate, great trigger and getting rave reviews. Take a look if your get a chance.
  20. First I swear. Sometimes I'll just stop for a while and let things quite down. If I spook them right at my stand, I'll get in place, then grunt, call or even rattle.
  21. Congrats to him! Great first deer with a bow and >>>-----> I like the picture in the creek bottom where you found him. Good job to both of you!
