  1. The wild ones do adapt well and are tough birds. Farming practices have changed a lot in my area here in the last 30 years and has had a big impact on survival. The small farms of the past left a lot of prime pheasant habitat untouched. I have sure seen a lot of hedgerows, grass fields and brush lots go by was of the bulldozer and plow.
  2. I like my bow stands at around 25' to avoid detection and keep my scent up and away. Some of my gun stands are a tad higher. I like a large diameter tree with branches near my perch to break up my outline and for added security.
  3. Nice brow tines. I don't think anyone can tell you how old a deer is based on one picture. It's a popular question in hunting circles tho.
  4. All the tag usage is spelled out on the DEC site here: http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/8305.html
  5. Maybe it's a road kill or one of the many that get hit during the first cutting of hay?
  6. Coyotes sure seem to get a bad rap by some and are blamed for game population issues. I just don't see them being a problem at all. I have coyotes all around me here where I live here in farm country. There are also large flocks of turkey and a very abundant deer herd. The rodent population on the rise too, squirrels and rabbits are everywhere.
  7. I like to get in the woods by 5:20am a day or 2 before the season and listen and determine where they are roosting. If you can sit for an hour or 2 you can also determine where they head from there. And this week, with the dry leaves underfoot and can be very dicey trying to get close to roosted birds.
  8. I don't know what hunter numbers look like in my area of southern Livingston Co but there sure seems to be a lot of turkeys around the last 5 years. From what I'm seeing, you just have to locate the flocks. I see a lot in Letch Park and surrounding areas.
  9. Did you look at the heater body suit? I used on last season along with a few hand warmers and was able to sit all day in cold temps. I get cold easily, which is my reason for going this route. It's a bit restrictive, but also like being in a cocoon, out of the elements.
  10. I try to get out scouting at least once a week this time of year. I'll be moving 2 stands slightly, adding a new stand, rotating trail cameras, more scouting. April and May are great times to be in the woods. I'll pull my cameras at the end of April and put them back out in late July. Early Sept is time put up other stands. >>>>------------>
  11. 1st week of May when turkey hunting I always seem to have a buck walk right up to me the first week.
  12. I sit all day quite a bit and need energy food while at the same time try to keep my scent down. I make a trail mix up that pecans, walnuts, raisins. Then throw in an apple and a snickers bar or 2.
  13. I put my Wildgame camera up on this ridge in hopes of catching a few bucks passing through. I captured a few mutts, but was pleased to see the local flock show up. 2 mos till the season opener and they are already rehearsing.
  14. Some State Lands require you to remove them after the season. You can put them up again in September. I hike/scout a lot and see them up all year long all over the place, chained, unchained, some forgotten. I'd say most leave them up year round. I pull most of mine and store them.
  15. I planted a half acre of switchgrass on my property 14 years ago. I wanted some cover for pheasants, and deer. it does take a year or two to really thicken up. Deer love to bed down in it and it's a good place for them to hide during deer season as long your leaving it as a sancuary. It's great cover and would be a good addition to any game managment plan.
  16. It's a bill proposal in Illinois called the “Firearm Owners ID-Insurance” bill; http://www.infowars.com/democrat-proposes-law-requiring-firearm-owners-have-1000000-insurance-policies/ As for the statement on what a standard NRA Membership includes... it's way off: http://www.nra.org/benefits.aspx
  17. Always have to pay taxes. Lots and lots of taxes.
  18. I've never been to pineridge, but buck pond is a great place to visit. However, you will want to be on Lake Kushaqua, not the smaller buck pond. I like to fish and Kushaqua is excellent for that. I've stayed on the Island a few times (there are only 2 sites R1 and R2 which you need to boat or canoe a few hundred yards from the boat launch to get there but well worth the peace and quiet) I've also stayed on a shore site via car. Great fishing and room to explore via canoe, boat.
  19. Another great place to get a review on is this site: http://www.chasingame.com/
  20. If you have a small wood lot and can cut your own wood, then a face cord will end up costing $5-10 in gas, plus your time. It's a lot cheaper than gym membership.
  21. Has to be Mountain Lion.... It looks like the camera was up close to the track and it's a squirrel.
  22. They passed this law under the cover of darkness, without any discussion from the taxpayers/citizens. If anyone thinks it will stop here, they are foolish. We can fight this legally, to a point and that's if we unite. If we all stood up and no one registered a single gun that would be a statement. If we all get in line to register, that will be another step toward more and more restrictions handed down in the middle of the night.
  23. Zwickey Judo points. I've never lost an arrow using them. http://www.cabelas.com/specialty-broadheads-field-points-zwickey-judo-points-150-100-125-grain.shtml
  24. I've heard of a few dates to march in Albany, and Washington. We all need to make a strong showing. Something the media can't ignore and for the rest of the country to see.
