70-100k a year for 6 months of work? And they want a raise? http://www.whec.com/news/stories/S3406154.shtml?cat=565

Great pictures!

My cap lock 54 cal w iron sights is one of my favorite guns to hunt with during the reg and late season. I've shot long bows and hunting with one has a great appeal to me, something I'd like to do some day.

During long hours on stand I've often fantasized how beneficial it would be, to be able to fly low over the area like a hawk to see where the deer were. However having drones buzzing around as a scouting tool is not something I ever want to see. And it would be a sad day indeed if they were allowed as a hunting tool during a hunt. I would rather have to go out in the woods and find a good Osage tree, cut off a limb and start carving my own bow to hunt with and take it in that direction, then go in the direction of more help from modern electronic technology. Just 2 cents from an older guy who longs for simple, quiet, relaxing times out in nature. Giving respect to the deer and being able to take one through hours of hard work and luck from above is a big part of what I seek. GM

No big cat sightings in a few mos.

That crusty snow is some of the hardest stuff to walk on. You put your weight on it and move forward then drop down through it abruptly. I jars my joints and just throws off the whole normal walking motion making it twice as hard to walk. I find myself looking for any bare patch of ground to travel on, all while avoiding solid ice which will take your feet out from under you in an instant. Hopefully we only have a few more weeks of these conditions. Lots of hiking ahead in April and May for sure. Enjoy out there and be safe.

I'm in the same boat and will be playing catch up with getting my firewood supply for next year and tree stand work. But a lot can still be done in April and May.

No, I do not. If all of NY gun owners would join together to be heard and all vote against those who voted the law in, then we could turn things around quickly. There are just too many who don't care, who don't think it will effect them and don't want to take the time to write a letter or even get out to vote.

Thanks, the Moultrie m80xt has been a good camera so far. Nice quality pictures, good battery life, decent trigger speed and works in below zero temps. I also like it because there are no lights blinking on the front when it's activated. Plus it's infrared. I just ordered another on sale at GM for $119.

wintering waterfowl in serious trouble
genesee_mohican replied to reeltime's topic in Waterfowl Hunting
The divers are hardy birds and there is plenty to eat in Lake Ontario. Botulism may be the cause there. As for the geese in NY all winter, they have plenty to eat in the vast grain fields in our area. They can always find a wind blown field with bare ground somewhere. -
This is the first bobcat I've had show up on a trail camera. And a buck is still hanging onto that little horn.

I've seen some fields with 30 deer in them around Geneseo and over by me. It's good to see the numbers.

Warm camo coat or jacket

I vote for a quiet water proof hooded parka with at least 200grms thinsulate. Cabelas.com is a great place to start. You may catch a good sale this time of year. I like a parka that goes below the waist to keep the cold air off the back side. -
If you have snow on the ground, now is a good time to take a walk and look for tracks and sign of scratching. Once you locate a flock or 2 you can start keeping tabs on them with more scouting and try to figure out thier patterns with early morning sits. The last 3 weeks before the opener it is very beneficial to get out on your days off and listen for them. I like to hike in to an area well before sunrise and take a seat for a few hours. This will help you locate roosting locations, and the areas they travel to in the first few hours. It's amazing how much you can learn from the birds just by sitting there and listening. I don't like to call because I don't want to educate them or draw them off of the normal routine. Once you have figured out what they are doing, you can then pick a few spots along known travel routes to set up. This doesn't gaurantee a bird, but it puts the odds in your favor. Scouting for them is half the fun.

I saw two beauties on March 24th one year.

I second Rivers Edge. Nice roomy stand, comfortable waterproof seat.

I've seen this before in the wilds of NY, but wasn't able to get a picture. Mountain Lions usually make a wound like that.

I wasn't agreeing with anyone on lengthy bowshots for deer. My statement was directed at the many threads on here that spiral downhill and I should have started another topic to discuss it. On the topic of limits on archery distance in the field: Unless I quit my job and shoot my bow all day I won't be taking a 75 yard shot anytime soon. I know it takes a great deal of practice and a perfect bow set up to be able to hit a paper plate every time at 50 yards with broadhead tipped arrow. I've had seasons where I was able to put the time in to do that. It's fun shooting at longer distances and I practice out to 60 every year. I enjoy archery and shoot deer targets in my yard daily 4 mos out of the year. I practice at those longer distances to be more accurate at shorter distances. My pins are 20,30,40 and I arm myself with a laser range finder at all times while hunting. With all that said, I know my limits while out in the deer woods. Each situation is uniqe and the game animal needs to be respected with a quick clean kill. I prefer to set up for close shots and my set ups usually have lanes trimmed out to 30 yards with the main trail at 15 -25 yards. GM >>>------------>

For the young hunters and new members coming on here to look for information, or to see what hunters are sharing with other hunters, they will find thread after thread that turns ugly like this one. Bickering and name calling are the norm. Big egos and stubborn minds take over. If it's not done the way they always did it, then some resort to belittling the person that doesn't agree them. It's pretty sad.

News censorship

Your not kidding there. Mainstream media is a joke and I only watch it once in a very great while to remind myself how off base it is from what is actually going on in the world. I read the news from the net and mainly from http://www.drudgereport.com/ It seems like our once great country is slowly sinking into more and more government control of it's people. -

FOX news has it correct. I've seen this news on a few webpages today: http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702304680904579366903828260732 The link is off of The Wall Street Journal. -
I watch as little TV as possible but I do check http://www.wunderground.com a few times a day to see what's going on.

Wow, nice buy! That will add some character for sure.
