I second the Italian Dressing marinade. Let it soak for overnight and then grill.

I guess I can see why some would think there are no deer where they are hunting. If I didn't scout year round and have trail cameras up where I hunt, and there were to walk out in the woods and sit down for a half a day, I may think the same thing. As a matter of fact, I've hunted hard this fall, had a half dozen all day sits and have seen limited deer movement at times. Some days I see none, other days I see 20, it depends on several factors. But if your not seeing deer where you hunt, the best thing to do, is go back out there after some snow has been on the ground for 24 hours and see if there any deer tracks.

I would think it was shot on bordering property opening day and ended up dying there, but without more details I'm totally guessing. Where on it's body was it shot? Was the deer laying in a spot visible from the road? Either way, it's too bad the deer went to waste like that.

Regular season Opening weekend. How'd you do?
genesee_mohican replied to DanceswithSkunks's topic in General Hunting
Had a great opener, hunted about a mile from my house out back on some private land. Never saw another hunter. I had a small 4pt close by 6:30am, rubbing trees, nibbling browse. A bunch of doe n fawns came by between 8 and 9am. I was in for an all day sit and took a nice 6pt at 1:30pm. 15.5 inch spread, 2.5 year old deer. I'll post more on the harvest thread. -
Legal shooting hours are sunup till sundown, period. The actual amount of light allowing humans to see well varies from day to day. Some mornings the full moon is up, the skies are crystal clear and one can see very well 20 minutes before sunrise. Other mornings there is no moon and dark clouds making good visibility difficult even at sunrise. Opening day was one bright morning here in 8M and I was surprised I didn't hear more pre sunrise shots. To each his own, I don't stress over it.

Sound like.................a fire?............a car accident? who knows?

38F here, the leaves are dry as a bone. Good luck to all, be safe and enjoy!

For an all day sit its a ziplock bag of nuts, seeds, raisins and an apple and water. I try to keep it low scent. I'll chow down big time when I get home.

My washer and drier have never seen scented soap or drier sheets. One benefit of having my own man~cave.

Sure has been a windy week. I'm taking tomorrow off to give it one last try before the orange masses arrive.... and it looks like the winds will be under gale force.

What county did this happen in? Has to be one of the LOWEST things I've heard of in hunting circles. I've never heard of such a thing here in the Finger Lakes of NY.

Nice looking deer. I guess they are just passing through at night and are bedding, staging and using daytime travel on adjacent properties. My trail cameras show a lot of daytime pics of shooters, but I can sit there all day and not see them.....so far.

Great topic and one of the most important when it comes to harvesting a deer cleanly with a bow. I have rushed shots and think it's something all archers have to deal with. There is a lot of preparation and not something to take lightly. Missing a nice buck will drive that point home painfully. Practicing on a deer target and simulating realistic in the field conditions as close as possible helps. I have a Glen Dell right out my back door so I like to walk out and take just 1 shot. Before the shot I tell myself "this is a giant buck that just walked out". I have 1 shot, pick a spot, call the shot, make it good. I'll do this from different yardage, angles, off my roof ect. During the season is one of the most important times to keep shooting daily, and with hunting cloths on. In the stand I like to draw the bow at the varying angles that may present it a shot. During the moment of truth I concentrate on the spot I want to hit, executing a good shot at the right time. Practice and mental preparation are things we all should be constantly working on to maximize clean kills and success in the field.

Remington 1187, rifled barrel, Leupold 1-4 scope. Usually one well placed shot does the trick.

I've had 4 all day sits during bow in 3 different stands and was disappointed with the lack of movement and mature buck sightings (2) and nothing over 115 or so. 150 and 12 pts ? nothing on the trail cameras close to that but it's a big place and I'm sure they are there. GM

Who is ready for some gun action this weekend!
genesee_mohican replied to burmjohn's topic in Deer Hunting
Semi excited this year. I always sweat my stand selection for the opener, but this year I won't be going down into Letchworth (where I do most of my hunting) as my permit doesn't start until Nov 25th But....... I'll hunt a different spot and am sure to have a smile on my face once I get settled into my stand in the dark. Just being out there on opening morning for my 39th year is a blessing I'll gladly take! I haven't slept well the night before the opener in quite a few years. Good luck every one! -
Sounds like she ended up getting first class treatment.

How do pass the time on stand when bored?
genesee_mohican replied to nybuckboy's topic in Deer Hunting
I usually occupy my mind by thinking about deer movement, (the chess game, my next few moves) and watching wildlife. I glass for deer, relax and just enjoy being out there on another hunt. I don't get bored too often. -
This year my trail cameras where showing some adult bucks moving between 12 noon and 2:30 pm in Oct. Woods bordering tall grass and brush line. A few years ago I was on an all day sit during first week of Nov, bow season and had a 125" eight point come up through wide open hard woods on the next ridge over 60 yds from me at 12 Noon. A few years before that I was on an all day sit during opening day of gun in and area with light pressure overlooking a brush lot bordering dense woods and had a 119" 9 pt, 18 " spread walk leisurely by before I shot him. This was at 1PM when most guys are finishing up lunch back at the truck or camp. Glad I was out there.

I've done 3 all day in the tree so far this year. I get there before sunup and stay till sundown. You have to be comfortable, warm clothing, lots to eat and drink. It's a challenge but very rewarding. I have a few stands that are 2 miles from the road so sitting all day makes a lot of sense.
