  1. Does anyone have some input on using this bone collector hang on?
  2. now that's a real challenge.......
  3. I agree with Doc on the lack of snow being the biggest bummer. Seeing the tracks is huge and it just makes for a nice hunt. We have had one morning wtih snow on the ground here in Livingston Co this year and it melted by noon.
  4. T/C 54 cal, White Mountain Carbine
  5. I love having just one shot. I'd like to see the gun season trimed to 2 weeks, then have 2 weeks for black powder. My T/C White Mountain Carbine in 54 cal cap lock with open sites is my favorite deer gun.
  6. It is true. You can't transport firewood more than 50 miles from where it was cut. This is off the NYS DEC website: If you transport firewood within New York State: It must have a receipt or label that has the firewood's source and it must remain within 50 miles of that source. For firewood not purchased (i.e. cut from your own property) you must have a Self-Issued Certificate of Origin (PDF, 14.5 kb), and it must be sourced within 50 miles of your destination. Only firewood labeled as meeting New York's heat treatment standards to kill pests (kiln-dried) may be transported into the state and further than 50 miles from the firewood's source. Acceptable firewood heat treatment must raise the core temperature of the firewood to 71 degrees C, or 160 degrees F, and hold it there for at least 75 minutes. Most "kiln-drying" processes that reduce the moisture content to less than 18% achieve this sterilization standard. For more information, please see the Frequently Asked Questions for Firewood Regulation. For additional questions regarding this regulation, please call this toll-free number: 1-866-640-0652 or e-mail: [email protected]. For more information see the DEC website below: http://www.dec.ny.gov/animals/44008.html
  7. Great strory and buck. 11 miles....you earned it. Congatulations!
  8. Same here, 35 years of living to hunt and fish and never been checked by a DEC officer.
  9. I spent at least 10 days in the woods from dawn till dusk and saw this rutting activity: Oct 28th: 6 bucks with a doe, grunting, snort wheezing, with the biggest one doing his best to keep the others away. 3 were mature bucks in the 120 range. Nov 5th: 6 miles away, 3 mature bucks doing the same dance. Nov 6th, hard chasing and grunting by a mature buck with a 1.5 That was it for me. And once gun season starts....all bets are off on seeing rutting activity as deer are bedded most of the day unless pushed out.
  10. I'll say nice 8. That's a cool rack
  11. It's amazing....they can hear a pin drop in the woods, detect the slightest movement and leap a 6 foot fence with no problem........yet they can't get out of the way of a truck roaring down the road.
  12. I think the best time will be after the low pressure passes and the barometer goes above 30.10. Combine that with the timing of Nov 2nd through the 8th, should be some great days to be in a tree stand all day. Before the storm may be pretty good too.
  13. I think the colder air will get the deer moving more during the daylight hours. From what this study says, the barometric pressure will be the thing to watch: http://www.outdoorlife.com/blogs/big-buck-zone/2011/10/how-barometric-pressure-affects-deer
  14. Thanks for reposting this story erussell. Great buck and well written story. I like the pictures taken out in the woods with the trophy.
  15. I was doing a little scouting the last 2 weekends ( I live nearby) and saw good sign, rubs. Oaks are raining acorns. I've yet to see a giant there, but I've only been hunting it the last 3 years. A few 110 ish bucks have showed up on the trail cams, but hard to see them broadside at 20 paces during bow.
  16. That's as nice as they come. I hope you get a crack at him!
  17. I hunted there a lot last fall. It sure was quiet on the weekends during gun, very little shooting. I sit all day quite a few days during bow and gun. I passed a few small legal bucks, but it was slow with all the warm weather during daylight.
  18. Yes, a North wind forcase means they are predicting a flow coming from the North. But every day after listening to the NOAH forcast I step outside and test the real time wind direction. What's forcasted and what is happening in my back yard can be quite different. And, on the mornings that it's variable, I tend to shy away from my best stands.
  19. I was in the woods all weekend here in central Livingston County and I didn't hear a single shot. I didn't see many hunters out on the way to and from my stands and had to wonder if the season was even open.
  20. I'm looking for a Remington 11-48 in 20ga Modified chock if possible. Thanks
  21. There are few things that irritate me more than someone burning garbage, plastic and who knows what else. It's illegal, it stinks up the air and can emit many toxic chemicals. The burning ban is in place for a very good reason. I would call the DEC back.
  22. If that is all it takes to annoy you (your neighbor feeding squirrels and birds I'm sure too).....then I suggest you start looking for a house out in the country where you have no neighbors. Note of caution: if you move to a rural area, leaves and even corn debris may end up in your yard at some point.
  23. 12 Portables. I remove some, leave some, reposition some, cut the tree down on some. Lots of work to get ready for next season. Oct 1st will be here before we know it!
  24. With no tags filled and down to the wire on the last day of muzzle loading season I was able to get out for the last 2 hours. This doe walked by at 4:18pm and offered a 30 yard shot. My 54 cal T/C White Mountain Carbine did the rest. Double lung hit, a 5 second, 60 yard dash and I have some tasty venison! I'm thankful. Merry Christmas to all! Genesee_Mohican
